I work part time as a FEMA/ NRT response unit.

The reports cites this as: https://earthquake.usgs.gov/regional/nca/wg02/losses.php

it would be devasastating for the first 48-72 hours on grounds that most folks wouldn't know how to get home.

EMS/ first response will NOT be available for the first 24/48.

Expectation realistically is ~a week out. during that time traige centers will be needed. folks have to get to the centers.

i could really go on doom and gloom all day long but instead lets focus on getting your self prepared.

The basic NERT/ earthquake prep is good but add a tarp and staple guns for the blown out windows. add noise canceling headphones/ or just ear muffs for kids cause there will be alarms and noises. debris filter like painters mask for particulates are crucial as well.

As far mission; to survive for a week.

My estimates as i am responsible for the Southern portion of San Francisco is only as good as the advisor that lets me know how many can really commit to the team.

as far as the 101/280 most portions will be rendered useless via obstruction and or destroyed. Both bridges stand well but a 6.5+ will give it the final exam.

older buildings if up to code should be alright (brick/ tougher foundation) the worrysome for me is the rent-lease/ apartments subletting situations that just added an extra water or tapped into the gas line.

tldr; infrastructure will be there just clogged. will need repairs and a band aid will take ~5 weeks for temp, ~4months perm.

i am on ambien right now and feel sleepy but when im awake i'd more than love to recommend yall some resources and classes and things to get in preparation.

for instance teach you how to shut off water/gas/elec then you teach it back to me. mayve go over non running water sanitations.

anyway dont worry, we are resilent and there exists hundreds of me to make best of what we have to this city.

edit:

Hey all, this is a expanded post in response to earthquakes that have been happening all over the place in the world. Some concerns have been raised and I feel like sometimes we take this for granted, or at least its in the back of our heads.

firstly, here are some official responses and resources from the State/ County/ Feds
http://sfdem.org/resources is also a great resource!

Here is the basic NERT or http://sf-fire.org/neighborhood-emergency-response-team-NERT

Schedule of training: http://sf-fire.org/training-schedule-registration

Red Cross recommended items to have and also basic check list: http://www.redcross.org/images/MEDIA_CustomProductCatalog/m4240216_Earthquake.pdf PRINT THIS OUT, YOU MAY NOT HAVE INTERNET!

Here is the FEMA https://www.fema.gov/media-library/assets/documents/15092?id=3538 this is what they train reserve FEMA response teams about. The Cd-rom is available but I learned via the booklet.

secondly, instead of bombarding and regurgitating ill get to the point on what things I think are nice additions and why:

  • I have no idea how your family or living situation is but of course food (I have some MREs) and water on hand but also a filitration pump.

  • Water bladder that fits in a tub is also good https://www.amazon.com/Reservoir-Emergency-Storage-System-Gallons/dp/B00DOMOCCI like that

  • A heater that runs off of available fuels like a butane hot-pot hot plate. Or a jetfuel systems https://www.amazon.com/Coleman-2000020951-Butane-Stove/dp/B00FGPXVSM/ref=sr_1_6?s=outdoor-recreation&ie=UTF8&qid=1480011136&sr=1-6&keywords=camp+stove is what I have

  • Fire extinguisher that actually works! So many people don’t have one. Also be wary of the cheap ones that spray everywhere and you may have to live by it for some time.

  • (~$18) Ear muffs/ noise canceling for the kids AND you. Alarms will be going off and its really jarring. Tell them it’s a secret mission and you are all on an adventure. Re-assure them things are ok. Trauma through a natural disaster is horrible.

  • (~$15) Particulate filter – I like the 3m brand, and they are sold in packs. You never know what building material will be opened up when things get shaken. In addition to the fires.

  • (~$X) tarps cut to numerous shapes, sand bags, staple gun, duct tape, weather tape, sealant of some kind. It’ll be a barrier between your home and outside and it’s a +1 to making you feel a little more secure.

  • Safety goggles / good set of working gloves – there will be debris you have to navigate through seeing and using hands is very important

  • (`$20) Headlamp – I like the triple AAA kind for obvious sustainability. Having a light makes things must more easy when navigating and in doors. I also have a light lamp like a lantern.

  • Glow sticks/ chem lights. I use red to mark off bad areas or dangerous areas of the home. White/ purple chem lights for trails in home, and green for rooms occupied

  • A survival radio to get news and updates

  • CASH – there may be gouging or not but we don’t know if the Point of sales will be readily available

  • Medications – have a solid plan on how you will get your prescriptions if necessary, maybe talk to your doctor about an extra script. Or pharmacy personnel. I have an extra for my parents blood pressure medication and it was easy as asking for an extra that we rotate.

  • Two-way cheapo walkie talkies in case my family/ part needs to move around and still communicate to each other (baofeng is the rip off of the motorolla but still works) https://www.amazon.com/Baofeng-Warranty-Dual-Band-Radio-Improved/dp/B00HX03AMA/ref=sr_1_5?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1480011051&sr=1-5&keywords=baofeng like this

  • Kitty litter/ sawdust/ wood shavings – good for sucking up any spilled liquids that may be dangerous

  • Water pump. In case you have a floor level/ basement (I know you east coasters don’t think we have basements) but in case it floods and you shut things off you still need to be able to move that water out somewhere else.

  • Wheel barrow/ or mobile hand-stand dolly. You may need to move things like sand bags or debris

  • Learn where the emergency and main shut off for electricity, gas, water. Maybe do some maintenance and make sure its not stuck!

o Water heater – learn if it’s a gas or electric and if you need to turn it off
o Home heating – maybe learn about the oil reserve and how to clean and sanction off

  • LASTLY BUT EQUALLY IMPORTANT WHERE WILL YOU PUT THESE ITEMS? Do not place them in a danger zone and are in-accessible.

    realistic time tables:

  • 1st responders in EMS/ paramedics will be in short supply, the hospitals and clinics will be slammed.

  • Transport will be difficult as most roads in the Bay Area will be congested and people generally will be shocked and confused and attempting to get home..

  • The estimates from FEMA and State of California (http://sfdem.org/sites/default/files/FileCenter/Documents/67-EQ%20Plan%202008.pdf ) is an older copy and has been updated but I can’t find the 2015

  • Realistically, my supplies and plan is to survive in the increments of 48 for life threatening, 2 weeks sustainment, a month before my domicile is secured.

problem #1 – theres a really high chance YOU WILL NOT BE at your domicile/ home as most people commute. I highly recommend you think about a plan to either meet up with family OR some type of emergency plan as a rally-point.

problem #2 – exposure to the elements, your walls might come down, your windows may shatter, your roof may open up, please see the items I recommended on tarps/ staple guns

problem #3 – you are prepared and have all this stuff? Now what? Well be wary – cause what if theres a fire from your neighbors? What if theres a tsunami and flooding? Or some other after effect that can really mess with the plan? I highly recommend a “go-bag/ or bug out bag and a rally point for your family” maybe your community center/ school auditorium, look ahead for designated shelters.

*problem #4 – firearms. This is something to consider. I won’t get into political/ moral/ safety arguments but consider where they are stored and the most safe but useful way you can use this.

re-assurances – last muster from the FEMA, Coast Guard, National Guard, SF/ County resources we mustered in under 24 hours to respond. (please please keep in mind, responders take care of their situation first, that’s a reason to the high response time)**

There are hundreds of us (first responders and personnel dedicated to helping and rebuilding)
The operation tempo or ideas will be “recovery> stability > rebuilding”
So I’ve included a lot of information, if anyone wants to question it feel free to open for discussion. Or additional information.

It's the best audio recording, certainly, but the poor mic couldn't handle the high amplitude of the sonic booms and attenuated the sound. Most cameras didn't do any better.

Here's a (loud) recording where the camera didn't attenuate the sound, but mostly because it didn't pick up low frequencies really at all, so there's no bass to the boom.

If it had been me making the trip out to one of these, I would bring along something that can actually do events like these justice. This classic recorder, for example, would have provided much better sound than any of the recordings I've heard thus far. (Speaking from experience -- I've used it to record things like thunderstorms and booming fireworks.)

Bose SoundLink Mini

I've had this for 9 months and it is easily the best electronic purchase I've ever made. This thing PUMPS and is super durable. I use it every day and love it. I take it to the beach, bike rides, when I workout (home gym) and it's loud enough to use for the living room.

4.8 stars on Amazon. 2,267 5 star rankings on Amazon. Dope ass beats wherever this thing is. This is WAY better than a Jambox, Beats Pill, etc. Nobody in my house uses any of the other bluetooth speakers any of us own.

I guarantee you'll love this speaker.

u/b4bl4t · 32 pointsr/gadgets

So OP said no Bluetooth speakers, however I believe this specific item qualifies.

I bought a Bluetooth wireless water resistant speaker for the shower, it's Chinese made and there are many different ones available on Amazon or AliExpress, all are virtually the same product.

Here it is:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00IGUUYTI/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?qid=1415055755&sr=8-1&pi=SY200_QL40

I got mine for around $10, and since bought 5 more which turned for gifts which everyone loves! Music in the shower is something I'm not sure how I lived without, and answering the occasional call is hilarious.

I own so many gadgets, this and this has been my favorite in the last couple of months.

u/Mitt_Romney_2016 · 31 pointsr/gadgets

Fiio X1. Actually made for sound quality as opposed to many players I have seen. They have a whole line of DAP's (Digital Audio Payers) ranging from the entry X1 to the more audiophile grade X5. Great reviews, hands down the best company to go with, imho. Solid aluminum with a warranty and 2 micro sd cards.

X1 $105
X5 $350 ish

u/MissRogers · 29 pointsr/AskWomen

There are bluetooth waterproof speakers! I love mine and listen to comedy and music while I'm getting ready - it seriously changed my whole routine and all for 15 bucks on amazon!

EDIT: the aforementioned speakers

u/coreystrapperkeeper · 26 pointsr/JUSTNOMIL

Do you still have the voicemails? You should make a short "best of" reel, and make your own audio xmas card! Send it with husband to give to the in-laws with a note "Sorry I can't make it, I'm sure you understand! -XOXO"

u/fidelitypdx · 19 pointsr/preppers

Hmm, might be time to stock up on Baofengs for those who have not yet.

I've bought about 20 different Baofeng radios.

For those who don't know, the UV-5R is the least expensive (see note below), around $30, and is a common radio used on the battlefields of Ukraine and Syria by militia forces. It has a practical broadcast range of about 0.5 miles in urban areas, and about a 1-2 mile range with line of sight. I know a lot of people claim their devices broadcast further, but this is just my actual practical testing.

A slightly more expensive (but much better) option is the UV-82HP. It effectively has double the range.

Both radios can be modified with software to operate outside of normal radio spectrum. I think a lot of us knew that eventually the government would catch up and do something. Conspiracy theorists have claimed that the Chinese government installs backdoor software on these, or that there's other nefarious components of these cheap radios.

It's rumored that these devices are substantially less expensive than US, Korean, or Japanese options because the Chinese government was subsidizing the price of each unit. Basically trying to flood the market with a cheaper version and unseat Motorola as the standard business radio. You do really get good capabilities for the price - but it's no where near what a $200+ HAM radio setup is capable of.

Personally, I think you should have a UV-5R plus extra batteries in every vehicle. If you ever run a convoy it becomes critical to have radio communications.

*There's older UV-5R models for $25, and they can be bought in bulk on Amazon. Or, this 5-pack for $111.

u/gbeaudette · 19 pointsr/baseball

I haven't gotten much of a chance to game test it yet, but I bought one of these.

So this iPod classic being discontinued business has really left my life in tattered little bits and pieces as I'm sitting here trying to resuscitate my dying iPod for the umpteenth time. I wish I was given some kind of warning. I know it's irrational to take this out on the human race but it really is our failure that high capacity MP3 players aren't in adequate demand. MP3 players had such an awful start before Apple came in and once the iPod happened you'd figure it was just a matter of time until other companies would jump in and the thing would just keep evolving from there. But it just winds up being shit, shit, shit, shit, iPod, shit shit shit shit shit and here we are now.

I don't get where things went wrong you guys. It's a device where you take your music library, put it on the thing, and you take it with you wherever you go. You take every album you own with you wherever you go and we just let it sit there. And now it's gone and I don't know what to do. What took its place? Streaming? Streaming? I don't want to live my life under the threat of buffering and I don't want to have to now seek out a phone, get a new plan and pay extra money month to month just to do what I was doing without it.

I look online for alternatives and it's like, people recommending 8gb devices and phones. Motherfucker I don't want a phone I want an MP3 player argh. I just want like 80 to 160 gigs on a working device. Alright I'm calm now, my iPod is back in order after about the 6th reset. It's warm. This is my life now. It didn't used to be this way.

Is there life after the iPod? Has anyone moved on to something else that's any good? Money is becoming less and less of an object for me with each time my iPod fails. I see the FiiO X5 get brought up from time to time, though I hear tell it doesn't support playlists which is really unfortunate but heard it sounds really good. I might just have to settle for someone's greasy used iPod or something. I don't know. These are sad times.

EDIT: And it's dead.

u/sambravers · 13 pointsr/gadgets

I always advocate heavily for the FiiO X5 over the iPod Classic. It has a very similar interface, it's cheaper (now), and it supports lossless audio formats (FLAC etc). Produces much better sound and is in general a better buy.

u/ombres · 12 pointsr/DIY

Seriously.

You could have bought a UE boom instead.

This looks heavy as shit.

u/Thedaveabides98 · 12 pointsr/showerbeer
u/Bossman1086 · 11 pointsr/Android

You're better off getting something like the FiiO X5 for $350.

u/LegoGuy23 · 10 pointsr/amateurradio

I'd take the money you'd spend on an 8w HT and go with a 4 or 5w HT and a better antenna.
It'll get much better results.
Something like a roll up slim jim J pole is a great antenna for portable and even base use.
A simple Baofeng like this one is decent.
Jus know that more than half of Baofengs don't meet FCC spurious emissions regulations compliance. Buy at your own risk.

u/DauphDaddy · 9 pointsr/XVcrosstrek

Hey there!

I'm Dauph, and I here are some things I've learned:

General

  • She doesn't crawl. Get some speed for steep hills. Be commited.

  • The attack angle from the bumpers are not good at all. The fender is plastic and flexable. If you are serious about off-roading, you'll find clips to start popping on the front. Example | Example 2

  • You should consider some All Terrain tires. Although the stock tires are a beast in themselves. I have a video here.

    Gear

  • Always have a good set of towstraps. At least 2. You never know when you need them. People are willing to help you get unstuck, but you should have straps to mitigate embarrassment.

  • A "come-along" is a good tool that I keep with me at all times

  • Radios are always good to have. I have one installed in my XV and I love using it in convoys and talking to truckers! u/agamoruso could tell you as well as he just installed one. u/k12azy13astard

  • A shovel! This thing has helped me a ton! You can pick them up at walmart.

  • A good first aid kit!

PM me if you'd like to know more

    Edit: Grammer, format

u/wtfCake · 8 pointsr/motorcycles

If you've got one of the Zero bikes(electric) and are going slower than 5 mph at about 3 am with no other traffic, then yes you could probably get by without a mic. The second you go above about 10mph, there's far too much wind noise, 30-50mph and you won't be able to really hear your bike. And unless you are planning on screaming inside your helmet the camera probably won't pick anything up.

I've got a GoPro Hero 3+ black and this is the mic I use($12.95): http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000MYPPPE/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

And it's plugged into the gopro via with a 3.5mm to mini usb cable($10.88): http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00A3MY7L8/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

If you're using a Sena headset, Sena makes a gopro backpack thing that lets you use your sena headset with your gopro($89.74): http://www.amazon.com/Sena-GP10-01-GoPro-Bluetooth-Pack/dp/B00I03984S

No mic(Still talking to rider ahead via Sena): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R_tO2EumcFo

Mic on highway (60-70mph): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4GeP_SqBCeA

Edit: Now with prices!

Edit2: Now with video!?

u/drakfyre · 8 pointsr/unity_tutorials

Heya, I do a little tutorial series myself called Cooking With Unity. It's always good to have more tutorials out there and I like that you are focusing on scripting basics and Javascript. I'll be referring people to you for scripting basics in the future!

I want to note that you may wish to invest in another microphone; there's quite a bit of noise on your videos. I ended up picking up this one and was very happy with it. (Yeah, it's a chunk of change; I ended up splitting the cost with my business partner/sound guy; I use it for my show and he uses it for sound effects and recording) I understand that the videos are free and I can still clearly hear you on the videos so it's not a HUGE deal, but if you want to improve your audio quality it's a good place to start!

Good luck with your videos and thanks for sharing!

If anyone is looking for a good cheap Bluetooth shower speaker, this one on amazon is extremely decent for around $13

u/neetoday · 8 pointsr/AskElectronics

There are Bluetooth transmitters that he can hook up to that speaker jack (I just bought one for my mother's TV), but they need to be powered. Here's the one I bought. It's big but probably still easily small enough to fit on a motorcycle.

https://www.amazon.com/Avantree-Audikast-Bluetooth-Transmitter-Headphones/dp/B077MXFJGQ/ref=sr_1_3?crid=EE7IX7OEDVOI&keywords=audikast+bluetooth+transmitter+for+tv&qid=1557076940&s=electronics&sprefix=audikast%2Cmobile%2C237&sr=1-3

This particular device gets its power via USB, and it looks like this thing can be hooked to his battery:

I live in a forest, so finding wood to use isn't an issue at all.

I just walk around looking for cherry/apple/maple etc. I try to collect as many branches that I might be able to use. Then I split them down the center. Most of the time, you can make a spoon from each half. I try to use branches that are bigger than 4" inches or so.

I like to draw a rough shape of the spoon on the wood. I use a hook knife to carve out the bowl, It takes some getting used to, but it works very nice. It's a little difficult to sharpen though.

Then with a hand saw, I cut out as much wood as possible. I also make a couple relief cuts to make carving around the neck easier. Next I use a draw knife to shape the handle. I also use a good sharp knife. The handle is probably the easiest part to carve, but it's easy to make it off center from the bowl.

The key is keeping the tools razor sharp at all times. After the initial sharpen, you should constantly hone the edge. This is most commonly done on a leather strip that's been loaded with a waxy honing compound. Honing is considerably easier/faster than sharpening, and keeps a wicked edge, but you still need to hit the stone every so often. All you need to do is wipe each face of the edge across the leather, wiping away from the edge of the blade.

Instead of using expensive sharpening stones, you can also just tape some sandpaper to some glass/granite. But I totally recommend the DMT diamond steel blocks. A coarse, and fine, will coast you about $100, but they work great.

It generally takes me about 4-6 hours to carve a spoon. I try to always finish in a single day, otherwise the wood will become dry, and harder to carve. I'll put the spoon in a plastic bag with some of the wood shavings to sit overnight so it doesn't lose much moisture.

I also like to make things on a wood lathe. Like whistles, spinning tops, mushrooms, containers, bowls, trays, baseball bats, mallets, wands, etc.
It's a lot of fun, and there's little stress in getting it right. There's no "right" shape of a mushroom, just go wild.

I mentioned what I would recommend, i was just vague with 2 of them.

it's more expensive, but it actually works, and can be used for other things.
(i have an all-in-one unit like you listed, its better with a lithium battery, but useless for anything but a low powered radio).

this charges anything usb....

its better to charge a battery so you're not tethered to it.
any powerbank will work; https://www.amazon.com/Bonai-Portable-External-Flashlight-Smartphones/dp/B06Y58CXFZ/ref=sr_1_9?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1505954885&sr=1-9&keywords=usb+battery

This is the only one I specifically recommend, the rest "any" will do.

this is a bit pricey.. buts its a 2 way radio, plus FM, weatherband, flashlight, water-resistant. lacks AM though.

but these are very nice, and can use rechargable batteries,, which could be charged with a USB AA battery charger. https://www.amazon.com/Sony-ICFP26-Portable-Radio-Black/dp/B012F0DGYE/ref=sr_1_3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1505955010&sr=1-3&keywords=sony+am%2Ffm+radio

if you want to argue price... actually charge your phone with that Eton product, and then if you still want to depend upon it, ill concede.

You have a couple of options, but the webcam and mic just... aren't going to cut it. You'll never get the sound mixed right. Best bet is going to be capture the audio and video separately, then re-combine. The problem is I've never met a camera that really captures good sound. You can get decent sound by using a video-capable DSLR with external mic connections... but you'll spend $3k - $5k to get that sort of a setup working right.

I'm assuming the primary focus here is the audio, so you can probably get away with the webcam for the video, or any digital camera that's video capable. The key to making it look good will be lighting, more than the camera. If you have a couple of halogen worklights around you can use those as cheap stage lighting. Failing that, position yourself in the sunlight from a window. Make sure the background behind you is free of distracting stuff like old clothes, random papers, etc. Even a cheap, crappy camera can usually take decent images and video if you give it enough light to work with.

Software: You'll need something like Audacity - which is free and pretty easy to use. Does everything you need.

On to hardware: Two options. I'll give you the expensive one first, then the hackier way.

If you're going for absolute audio quality, you'll need a large diaphragm condenser mic. You'll want a mic for each channel you want to capture - so one for the vocal, one for the instrument. Expect to spend ~$100 per mic give or take. Monoprice has a decent one a little cheaper. Craigslist is a good source. When you get into mics, it's as fidgety a question as "which guitar is the best" - but that's your starting place. You'll need to run the mics into a mixer board (and condenser mics usually use phantom power, so your mixer needs to support that). Again, Monoprice has some decent sub-$100 options, or you can chase Craigslist. Figure this will cost you $300 to $350 after mics, cables, stands, and mixer. You can easily spend $$$$$$ as you get better stuff, but that's the basic setup.

The cheaper way - something like a Zoom H2N. Since these will do stereo recording, I tend to hang one off a mic stand horizontally halfway between my guitar and face. That lets me catch (mostly) the voice on the right channel and (mostly) the guitar on the left. After that I can do corrections and relative volume on each at least mostly separately.

The third alternative would be a USB mic like the Blue Yeti on the desk, use the computer's webcam to record video and the audio from the mic at the same time. I have a friend who's an operatic tenor, and he records his video auditions this way. I don't have the details on the software he's using, though. The H2N I linked above can be used the same way - put it in USB mic mode, record audio and video at the same time.

Given what you're trying to accomplish, I'd recommend the H2N, and depending on just how lazy you want to be either record separately and recombine, or use it as a stereo USB mic. But you really do want a way to separate the vocals and the instrument at least a little to fix specific things on each side and match the volumes a bit.

I didn't do a stunning job with it, but about 30 minutes ago I did a quick demo of a song on the H2n. I love mine, anyway...

Edit

You can also get a better USB webcam. Many Point-n-Shoot digital cameras also can be used as a USB recording device.

This is what I just got for my first HT:

u/genericdude999 · 6 pointsr/backpacking

I have many, many hours on this. It's great to not have to fuck around with a cord, especially while wearing a pack. I think it's 2.5 oz. Comfortable. For some reason it's been super tough. I keep expecting it to break, but it's been years now and it just keeps going, including the battery. Use for hiking, gym, biking, everything. No annoying software, just drag and drop mp3s.

EDIT: Lost for two days. Just now found outside in the snow next to my truck. Survived deep snow and subzero temperatures for two nights. Dried off and started up. Works great. :)

There's also this one: http://www.amazon.com/Fiio-X3-Mastering-Quality-Wolfson/dp/B00E9O6C96

I don't think it comes with any onboard memory, but it can hold up to two 128GB SD cards, supports all kind of file formats, and has a much, much better DAC and amp than the iPod. The downside is almost definitely going to be its UI, which has been historically abysmal in the DAP market.

u/dudemanwhoa · 6 pointsr/LetsTalkMusic

This is one I saw. Its $350, and takes two SD cards. 128 GB Sd cards are about $100, so all told its about $550. I think its possible to find 128 GB SD cards at $70 so it could be as low $490. A bit out of my price range.

EDIT: plays FLAC. yay!

u/jabonko · 5 pointsr/rpg

Binaural recording is a good bet. Basically you use multiple microphones (or special mics) to record sound more like how your ears would hear it. That way when you play back, if two people are talking over each other, you would hear it in different headphones/speakers and it would be more like following a live conversation.

I recorded several game sessions using a Zoom H2 but I would expect that there are less expensive options (and possibly better-quality options by now), as I bought mine years ago.

Another method is the foam head method (I learned about this via Yog-Sothoth.com's various podcasts and game recordings). Basically you have a foam head at your table with microphones in its ears. Binaural recording with microphones placed approximately where human ears would be.

One thing I've found is helpful: do not keep the microphone directly on the same table on which you are playing. Dice rolls are thunderous explosions, every pencil scratch is heard, shuffled papers cover voices, etc. You can put it on the table with something soft underneath (piece of felt, napkins, towel, books) to prevent some of that noise.

It can take some getting used to for the people being recorded. I know at first I talked directly to the microphone, which meant I was louder than others who spoke more conversationally to each other. Some people are more likely to talk when there is a mic present, others may get quieter or contribute less. So that's just nontechnical stuff to be aware of.

I went with the very affordable Baofeng option that was brought up in a thread a couple weeks ago. You can manually program it or program it from a computer using free software (/u/theman00 has been posting .csv files for all drivers/broadcast channels that you can upload directly, all at once). This radio IS a transceiver, but you can disable the transmission capabilities. 127 programmable channels that you can assign the driver or broadcaster names to. I used mine at the Indy 500 and it was great.

CHIRP is freeware that works really well for programming this and many other radios.

Amazon links below:

radio

headphone adapter

USB Cable

Note: Programming it with the USB can be finicky because Windows will continually try to update the driver to a newer version that isn't compatible with the chip. Its an easy fix, but you'll have to go into the device manager and roll back the driver to the older one. Instructions Here

Edit: added link to CHIRP software

I have found this combination to be by far the best.

Bluetooth Adapter

Sennheiser OCX 865i

I have been running this setup for a several years without any issues. The adapter works way better than some integrated solution. It relocates the weight to anywhere you want. Gives you headphone choices. Works well outdoors too. (I only use it on runs with my phone but I don't see why it wouldn't work on a ride.) And if your headphones die you only need to replace them.

I wrote a long blog post about this setup some time ago but can't find it anymore. Anyway, I found the battery lasted about 4 hours when it was set to full power with those headphones. The adapter is a generic unit so you will find multiple brands. For example I also have a NoiseHush version. Just make sure to get the one with a micro USB charger. The first gen units had this goofy charger cable that you can't easily replace.

Finally, another nice feature is that the play and skip forward and back buttons do work with at least iOS. I found it extra handy when watching Netflix on my iPad while connected to the TV. I could play/pause the movie from it.

As for the headphones, those are my personal favorite. Good volume, good sound, and nice fit options. I have sets of both the retail and refurb and all are still working well after a lot of use.

Get this and thank me later. I have owned about (not exaggerating) 20 different bluetooth speakers including bose, jbl, beats, sony, and Logitech. Hands down the best speaker for the money in my opinion is the UE Boom, or UE Megaboom if you can afford it. It's indestructible (we literally played football with the speaker in a pool and with drops and all it was fine), completely waterproof, has an incredible battery life, and can easily be paired with a second UE boom for stereo if you so desire. There really is not a better designed bluetooth speaker around at the moment and it sounds pretty damn good.

u/Twiggy159 · 4 pointsr/hoggit

Since I made the album on my phone I can't add captions. So I'll explain it here.

After looking all over the place for some sort of DIY project of making the TrackClip Pro wireless, I decided I'd give it a shot. My TrackClip Pro has seen better days anyways. All it is is a 3x AAA battery pack, switch, and green LED from Radioshack in a plastic housing. It definitely isn't going to be my finished product because of how bulky it is. I need to find some way to make it a lot smaller, maybe even breaking it into two packs.

I think next I'm going to try using a smaller switch and LED, as well as a small circuit board to solder it all onto. Because right now it is somewhat heavy, and I need to make it more compact. In the pictures I have it sitting vertical on the headset. It's much better sitting horizontal on it as far as having that giant chunk on your ear.

It seems to work great off of the 3 AAAs although I have no idea how long the battery life will last. From reading around the TrackIR forums it seems that it draws 5v typically from the USB, and the AAAs are only putting out 4.5v. So we'll see how that goes.

I've seen people use the rechargeable emergency USB chargers like this one but I didn't feel like dropping $30 on it, plus I like to build things myself!

u/IsItFunnn · 4 pointsr/beermoney

I've been doing transcription for a number of years. You definitely need a footpedal to make any decent money. This is the standard foot pedal used. https://www.amazon.com/Infinity-Digital-Control-Computer-USB2/dp/B002MY6I7G/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=infinity+foot+pedal&qid=1572022737&sr=8-3

However, before making any foot pedal investment, if you haven't been trained or had any practice in transcription before, I'd suggest you listen to some transcription audio files (which you can get on the Internet, I'm sure) and practice typing what you hear.

u/EasyMrB · 4 pointsr/Nootropics

You can record the classes you are sitting in and then replay them later at 1.5x (or whatever speed you want, it supports a wide range of variable playback speed) on headphones while you study.

Also the recording quality is really good and you can use it to audio-diary.

u/kaidomac · 4 pointsr/IWantToLearn

So there's a million ways to do this. First, I'll start by saying that the two hallmarks of amateur video are:

  1. Zero stabilization
  2. Crap audio

So to remedy that, you want:

  3. Great stabilization
  4. Excellent audio

The first thing I'd recommend is to get a solid camera system setup. If you just want to make some fun short films without spending thousands of dollars, I'd suggest one of two kits:

  5. A DJI Osmo Pocket camera system
  6. A smartphone camera system

The Osmo system ($400) is a tiny camera mounted to an electronic handheld stabilizer; it lets you get nice, smooth motion shots & can also be mounted to a tripod (various aftermarket systems are available for it).

    https://www.dji.com/osmo-pocket

This setup runs about $400, plus the cost of a tripod. Here's a nice starter video tripod for $140 with a fluid head, which allows the camera to be panned & tilted smoothly:

    https://www.amazon.com/Cayer-BV30L-Professional-Mid-Level-Camcorder/dp/B0784CWMP4/

Alternatively, most smartphones shoot 1080p video these days. In addition, you can tweak them out with additional software & hardware for enhanced functionality. I highly recommend the Filmic Pro software, which is available for both iOS & Android: ($15 or $20)

    https://www.filmicpro.com/

If you have an iPhone or a Google Pixel 2/2XL, you can buy an anamorphic lens ($150), which gives you that nice widescreen look. That's a nice step up over the Osmo, as using say an iPhone allows you tap the screen to lock focus & also use a neat glass lens to get a great picture effect.

    https://moondoglabs.com/collections/lenses

As far as smartphone stabilizers go, there are a variety available. I have a Smove gimbal & really like it:

    https://smove.video/

Zhiyun has a good one on Amazon as well:

    https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07BHCC3BV

So either the Osmo or smartphone approach gives you a great camera, plus an electric gimbal stabilizer, plus a tripod for fix shots & for doing pans & tilts, and some tricks for using it like a mini crane by tilting it & stuff. For editing video (on a computer), Blackmagic has a version of their pro-grade DaVinci Resolve 16 software available for free: (editing, color correction, etc.)

    https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/davinciresolve/

As far as audio goes, it's pretty simple: use an external mic, and for vocals, keep it within 12" of the person's mouth. People generally either use a mic on a boom stick, or else a lav mic that you can clip to a lapel or whatever. You typically want to capture vocals & some environmental sounds, and then do foley (adding sound effects like putting a V8 engine on a Honda Civic, haha) & add some music & soundtrack stuff. There is software available for syncing up separate, standalone mics. If you have the budget available, the Zoom H2n is a great starter microphone:

    https://www.amazon.com/Zoom-H2N-H2n-Handy-Recorder/dp/B005CQ2ZY6/

I use a Redhead windscreen on mine:

    http://www.redheadwindscreens.com/

You can get cheap lapel mics too, for as low as $30 or so, that do a pretty decent job to capture people talking. But as far as making basic short films go, that's a pretty good ultra-budget setup...you get good video quality, good stabilization, and good audio recordings.

The next step is adding some lighting into the mix, which really helps a ton. If you'd like to play around with things, simulation is available, from a variety of sources. One I really like is called Cine Tracer, which is a cinematography simulator for lighting etc., sold through the Steam gaming store:

    https://store.steampowered.com/app/904960/Cine_Tracer/

Anyway, that's just a very, very basic introduction to some tools that can get you some great-looking stuff right off the bat. The minimum would just be sticking a smartphone on like a $30 tripod & shooting from there. A step up would be a gimbal system & separate audio system as discussed above, and perhaps a basic LED lighting kit. If you have a few grand to play with, they make some really stellar cameras in that pricerange now, such as this 6K camera for $2,500:

    https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/blackmagicpocketcinemacamera

Great audio is also surprisingly inexpensive (relatively speaking, in terms of film equipment pricing). One of the first production-grade pieces of equipment I purchased was the Sanken COS-11D lav mic, which is used on a lot of movies & TV shows, and ran just shy of $500. That may sound like a lot, but an 8K RED Monstro digital cinematography camera starts at over $50k, so audio isn't that bad in comparison.

So a big part of it begins with budget & what you plan on doing. If you're just goofing around with friends, get a decent fluid-head tripod & use your smartphone & Filmic Pro to make some cool stuff. Save up & add some lighting, and maybe a gimbal, and some audio equipment. There's so many things you can do super-cheap & still make it look cool!

just bought 2 of these baofeng ham radios recently. you can program in all the FRS, GMRS, MURS, weather frequencies etc. they can use 2 meter and 70 meter bands. you're supposed to have a license though except on like FRS (but then you're technically not supposed to use them on those frequencies but i seriously doubt anyone gives a shit). and if you're lost in the woods and trying to find some on 2 meter for help i certainly wouldn't be worried about getting a fine :p

you can also put in fire department frequencies etc. in smaller towns.

Gonna go a different route and suggest the Walkman earbuds. I have the older, larger version and they are seriously awesome. Weather resist (now actually waterproof), no wires dangling, light weight. Downside is it's shuffle play only, but I've had mine for years and absolutely love them. So much easier than dangling wires, armbands, whatever.

u/CarolynDesign · 4 pointsr/secretsanta

I wouldn't feel too bad about it. It's not the most personal gift in the world, but you weren't given a ton of information to work with. In the future, maybe send messages to ask about other interests and likes; you can even tell your giftee that you're good at fashion/costume design, and would he be interested in something like an -insert item you're able and willing to make here-?

For this year, the only other thing you might consider is sending a card or a note on redditgifts his way, suggesting some things he might like to buy with the Amazon giftcard, and that you weren't sure which one he'd find most useful in his life.

Here are some things you might suggest:

A waterproof bluetooth speaker

A laptop stand to prevent overheating when pulling long hours producing music

A cool looking USB hub, because he probably needs a lot of USB ports to do all that.

A sound recording pen, so that if he thinks of a good rap on the fly, he can record it and jot it down at the same time.

Or just a nice fountain pen, great for graphic designers.

Then, you've made some suggestions for what you think he'd like, but if he'd rather use it for something else, the ball is in his court.

u/quitterjunior · 3 pointsr/Controllerism

Do you have a car? You could amplify with the car's speakers. If there's no audio jack in the car, they sell little fm transmitters. You could keep a laptop charged for ableton with power from the cigarette lighter, using a power inverter (like $20). Might want to keep the car engine running (but only outdoors and with lots of room for ventilation) so the car battery doesn't die on you. You could even set up on the roof of the (stationary) car, or in the bed, if it's a pickup. Why? Because, your punk as f*ck, that's why.

Things like the raspberry pi, wiimotes and gaming controllers could also make you a little more portable if you're not wedded to the push. A single wiimote, sending just bluetooth to your computer is equivalent - by my quick count - to a midi controller with 4 knobs (x,y,z,acceleration) and roughly a dozen buttons. Add infrared and that's a few more knobs. Then, in osculator and/or ableton, you can increase those figures exponentially by mapping events to button combinations. (E.g., the A and B buttons are each mapped to unique midi messages like c1 and c#1, while pressing A and B buttons at the same time is mapped to something different like f#2).

Any set is going to be a lot more portable if you're not responsible for your own amplification, or if the location of speakers is flexible. I haven't quite figured out whether this last one is viable yet, but it SEEMS like the Chromecast could be a budget option for wireless audio. If that were the case, you could brusk anywhere there's a tv. There are tutorials online re: using the Chromecast as a wireless hi-fi with the aid of hdmi audio splitter cables, or something.

In a similar vein, a raspberry pi with a WiFi or Bluetooth dongle running pd-extended or something would be laptop-ish. It couldn't any handle heavy lifting like ableton, but it could be useful as an audio or midi interface, or for getting bigger equipment like amps off site. I've actually been toying with this last one a little. I'm going to use the pi as a headless, wireless relay for data from bend sensors and ultrasonic sensors weaved into my clothes, and run through arduinos so they can act as mid I controllers inside ableton, but so I can still dance around, untetheredA term of art for productive googling with that kind of idea is "wearables" or "e-textiles". Make magazine has a few features on the concept.

I'm trying to powering the pi with this: http://www.amazon.com/Duracell-Instant-Charger-Includes-Universal/dp/B002FU6KF2

For getting audio (e.g, from a guitar) into the pi, or iOS devices, I'm using a uca-222. It's tiny, cheap and USB powered.

For wireless/portable midi or osc, don't overlook your phone, either. A lot of iOS apps can send midi and/or osc messages if you set up your laptop to broadcast an ad hoc network. An app called "Lemur" lets you do all kinds of midi/osc stuff. People post tons of templates for controlling ableton, Max for live, and even specific 3rd party plugins, all from an iOS device. You can also just put together your own custom interface. Touch OSC and Mr Mr also do this kind of thing. The ad hoc network thing was kind of a nightmarish process the first time I tried to figure it out, and with the lag it's probably not suited to actual, virtuosic finger drumming. An app called Apollo midi over Bluetooth (assuming you have Bluetooth 4.0 (LE), has worked a lot better for me with less lag and fewer dropped handshakes (which will be an issue if you do this in public, where the spectator's own phones are competing for your radio bandwidth.) Apollo is "musical" enough that with a slow song, at least, you could use it for notes. Try midimorphosis through Apollo (the "audiobus"" app is useful, but not necessary for this) into ableton. You can then sing into your phone, for example, with real-time midi accompaniment. Again, you're not going to wow anyone with your blistering voice controlled guitar solo, but it's passable for pads or chords. And anyway, there's no such thing as late notes in ableton...

I'm not really heeding any of my own advice. I'm trying to prepare a busking too, and I want it to be portable, but I can't bring myself to exclude the push. Right now I'm just using rolling modular wire shelving to support everything. The wheels have brakes, but it's too lightweight and it shakes when I press the push, which is a non-starter.

There are little tables made specifically for supporting the push or the apc40. You've seen them. They look a little like music notation stands. Very portable. Or if you want to go the opposite direction, or just make a statement, you could use a lectern. I used a wooden one as a makeshift standing desk for a while. It was cheap. Any university surplus store should sell them.

There are tons of ways you can economize for live performance just within the push itself. You probably went with push for that exact reason. But just like with ableton, don't put the horse before the cart. Make sure you know all of its features inside out. If there's something tricky you want to try, always first ask yourself whether it's built into push or ableton. It's heartbreaking to feel like you've just discovered fire, only to realize fire is a basic feature. It feels downright unbecoming of an artist to "read the manual," I know, but make an exception for this one thing.

With that said, here's two dirty tricks for live performance: Map velocity and after touch. There are a couple aftertouch M4L devices out there. Map either of these to, well, anything, for instant awesome. For instance: if you're playing the notes of a melodic solo instrument on push's pads: map the velocity (how hard you hit the pads) to the sync rate on an arpeggioator or beat repeat. Map aftertouch (how hard you press the pad after initially pressing) to something like an lfo rate. After touch in particular is fun if people are up close. Technically if you had it mapped to pitch, you could play -like actually play - the melody of an entire song with a single finger, theremin-style. But the fact that that's actually happening would just be lost on everyone if you were on stage.

Finally, if you're playing right next to people, instead of on a stage, consider implementing an interactive aspect. Motionmod or faceosc on a laptop pointed towards the audience would pay easy wow-factor dividends. And there are a few tutorials around re: mobile midi-triggering dance floors.

A few of my suggestions (I have no clue what the price range is):

  • Wool Buff - $30 - get a funky color, they are versitile in winter
  • Gloves Kinko work style - $25 or FlyLow John Henry - $30 - both quality, light gloves
  • Chap stick - $5 - a funky case or just fluff to add to your gift
  • Liquor mini bottles - $5 each - it gets cold out there
  • Clif Bars - $5 each - hippy hikers eat these up (literally)
  • Duracell USB battery pack - $11 - phone/camera batteries die fast in cold weather
  • HotHands warmers - $13 - I really don't like these things, but most people do. Zippo version is pimp

OKAY! So, I think this is pretty much everything that makes my setup what it is. If you see anything I’ve missed and are curious about, or want more details as to how everything came together, lemme know!

I ordered up this funky piece for forward movement and strafing:
http://www.amazon.com/INFINITY-FOOT-PEDAL-INSUB2-IN-USB2/dp/B002MY6I7G/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1333584503&sr=1-1

I'll still have Nostromo D-pad, but hopefully not nearly as much thumb cramping

u/burke_no_sleeps · 3 pointsr/WorkOnline

If you don't already have a foot pedal, get one. They make it possible to rewind / play / pause without ceasing to type.

What software are you using for playback? NCH ExpressScribe is free and designed for use with a foot pedal.

It takes about twice the length of the recording to accurately transcribe. Your speed and accuracy will go up over time. You can practice by transcribing YouTube videos / television. In fact, closed-captioning companies often hire people to do live transcription, which has a much broader margin of error.

Some clients want tags, others don't. Tags are only really useful in cases where there are multiple speakers or a question-and-answer format. Ask the client first.

Your comfort is important for endurance, so make your chair and desk as ergonomic as possible. There is a very real risk of developing tendonitis in the wrist due to consistent typing; use of a wrist pad is ideal. Take regular breaks for stretching.

My advice: Listen through once, typing everything you can understand as quickly as possible. Listen through at a higher speed a second time, correcting mistakes and adding tags. Listen through a third time at an even higher speed to ensure you've done the best you can.

u/misterschmoo · 3 pointsr/turning

You need a quarter round bit for a router to round the sides and then a hook knife to carve the bowls.

https://www.amazon.com/Mora-Frost-164-Woodcarving-Knife/dp/B00343VCCK

u/sourdoughbred · 3 pointsr/woodworking

If you want to make spoons then that set isn't really want you need.

What you need is a hook knife for carving the bowl and a straight knife for all the other cuts.

It would be great to have a hatchet to rough out the shape of the spoon so it doesn't take you all year. I've seen lots of people do the roughing with a band saw though. You could use a coping saw if you don't have one.

I don't love the hook knife I have. If the wood is a little dry it kinda hurts my hand. It's this one https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00343VCCK/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1487362012&sr=8-1&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=mora+hook+knife&dpPl=1&dpID=31qGjXQoECL&ref=plSrch

I wound up grinding the bevel off mine to make a smooth curve and it worked a little better than new. But it works ok as is.

I've also got this straight knife https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B005IW5YN8/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1487362243&sr=8-3&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=mora+carving+knife&dpPl=1&dpID=31CuaoTEJGL&ref=plSrch

They have a shorter version that would probably have given more control, but I'm ok with it.

You'll also want to make a strop to maintain the cutting edge. You'll need a block of wood, a piece of leather and stropping compound. https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0000DD35C/ref=pd_aw_fbt_469_img_3?ie=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=YGCVJKF34JWCTN2MNFPV

Can't say about this compound. I got mine from lee valley.

All in all, if I did it over again I would have bought higher quality knives, but the ones I wanted (from a guy named Nic Westerman) were out of stock. And since you're on a budget they would fit in your price range.

The Bose SoundLink Mini is a bit over your price range butI have one and I love it, definitely worth the extra $50 if you can manage it.

If you want something cheaper there's the less expensive color version which I've never owned but I've heard them and they sound really great too.

u/GodleyX · 3 pointsr/audiophile

Hello. I am looking to purchase a bluetooth speaker for my father for xmas. He is interested in the Bose Soundlink Mini because one of the guys at his work uses it, and he likes how loud it can get, and the quality of the sound. He wants to use one to listen to music when hes out on the pontoon boat in the summer. I'm sure he would use it when hes doing work in the garage or something as well.

I am willing to spend upto the $200 pricetag of that bose speaker, but.. Its bose, and I generally hear bad about Bose from folks who know sound. So I figure I might be able to get something with better sound quality, and higher volume for the same price.

It will be used only for playing music from his or my moms cell phone.
I would also prefer to buy new as this is a xmas gift.

u/sseville · 3 pointsr/NASCAR

No problem. There appears to be a slightly newer, "improved" version here for $34. Or you can get the same version I have, here for $26.

Either way, basically the same radio, may as well just go with the cheaper of the two. Both are the same unit internally; but if things like a multi color backlight for the screen are important, the $34 dollar one is better.

With either, you'll also need a headphone adapter plug, 2.5mm to 3.5mm, here for around $5.

u/largepanda · 3 pointsr/amateurradio

I would say 1.25m or 70cm. If one or both of you can put an antenna up in the air a bit (just TV antenna height, nothing fancy) you should be able to talk to each other easily.

For maximum communications you could go for directional antennas pointed at each other.

VHF, UHF, and above only requires a Technician level license (lowest tier) in the US, which is very easy to study for and get. Hamstudy.org is bloody great for getting you to memorize all the answers and pass the test.

----

as for the economic side of things, a Baofeng UV-5R V2+ should be more than good enough, and you can pick one up for $34 off Amazon. The UV-5R does 2m and 70cm,

> Disappointing to hear that I won't be able to join the hobby for a while, since it won't be worthwhile.

That's not quite what u/xradionut said. Look into your local clubs. An inexpensive Baofeng will work very well to get you into the hobby if you can hit a local repeater and chat with people (like on a weekly net meeting with a local club). Look into your local clubs and ask them, do some research on the location of the repeaters in your area, and if you do get a Baofeng, at least get a better antenna (like the one listed on Amazon under frequently bought together).

I tried with the At Bat app, but the significant lag was maddening. I went to PC Richards and picked up a portable Sony AM/FM tuner for $20, specifically to bring to solo Citi Field outings.

Edit: This one

It's also available at Amazon for 2 dollars cheaper, but I'd rather try to give some of my money to a local company. Plus, I was buying it the day of a game, and wanted it right then and there, rather than waiting for it to ship.

You can find other options as well, if you just search for portable radio, but I figured the Sony would have a better chance of holding up and performing, over the long term, than some no-name version that I saved $5 on

My office has all mounted routes, so I don't walk door to door but rather I drive mailbox to mailbox. Instead of headphones, I use a bluetooth speaker and I can't imagine going through a workday without it. So headphones or a speaker, depending on whether your fiance primarily walks or drives on his routes, is a great idea.

A nice water-resistant backpack comes in handy, and maybe even an insulated lunch box or waterbottle/thermos.

This may sound stupid, but when I get home aromatherapy helps me relax and sleep. I bought a little InnoGear oil diffuser off of Amazon and I like the Prime Natural oils like Good Night and Anxiety Relief. It's just a chill way to end the day.

Given your parameters, any handheld set would work. I have the midland 75-822, and it works well.

The only radios with built in batteries are going to be handhelds. buying used CB radios is always iffy (most are unusable for one reason or another) so i don't recommend that route.

Buying any non-handheld unit is going to require you to know a little about wiring antennas and wiring for power (meaning, you have to buy more parts for both of these sections. handhelds are overall the cheapest way to get power/radio/antenna).

I have a [Midland HH54VP2] (http://www.amazon.com/Midland-HH54VP2-Portable-Emergency-Weather/dp/B003FGWF04/ref=pd_sim_e_3?ie=UTF8&refRID=0SBSD11J3A7TKXMQ0HMS), a Midland desktop at home, a [Midland 75-822] (http://www.amazon.com/Midland-75-822-Channel-CB-Way-Radio/dp/B00000K2YR) CB with weather radio in my truck, an Eton FRX2 and an Eton Scorpion.

I pretty much use the HH54 the most. It gets the best reception of any of those (even the one in my truck with an external antenna). This one has a rechargeable battery pack and a desktop charging cradle. The it will easily go for a couple of months on a charge (turned off, not in "monitor" mode, which will need to be charged in a couple of days). It is small and rugged and I usually take it along when I am away from my truck.

I do use the 75-822 a lot, usually once or twice a day during my commute. It also includes a battery pack and a rubber antenna for portable use.

I do like the FRX2 and it gets some use. It holds a charge well and I like having the ability to use the solar or crank charger. As a charger for a cell phone or other USB device, I would not rely on that, as it takes a lot of cranking. It can also be charged through the USB port. The tuner is analog and includes AM and FM.

I really wanted to like the Scorpion, but it is a disappointment. It works, but you can only charge it with the solar panel, the crank or with an external AC adapter (not included), but not through the USB port, which seems stupid. It is also considerably bigger and more bulky than the FRX2 or the Midland portable. Reception is good, but the tuner (which is digital) and switches are rubber covered buttons, which are difficult to work. Flashlight is ok, but nothing stellar. I do like having AM/FM on this, but again, you fight with the rubber buttons to select band and station.

You definitely need an audio interface in addition to a mic, but there are decent USB mics now that combine the two. I prefer separate mics, but I commonly record with multiple mics.

If you can stretch your budget to something like a Scarlett Solo and an SM57 or one of the other mics recommended here, I'd go that route.

Barring that, I highly recommend the Zoom H2 or ny of it's variants. It's dependable, records in good quality, and it's easy to use. It also can hook into a computer and be a mini-interface. Even if you upgrade to better mics down the line you'll find this portable recorder very useful.

I don't know much about recording soundcards, so don't take this as gospel. But I can tell you that when I was looking into doing some basic music recording on my PC, the card options that came up started somewhere around $200. If you're recording vocals, you also need a microphone preamp and a good quality microphone at a minimum.

If these guys are serious musicians, they might already have most of what they need, and the soundcard is the last step. But they may also find what I did, which is that $400 worth of PC sound equipment still doesn't generate recordings as good as a decent handheld digital recorder like the Zoom H2. It's got the bonus of being an all-in-one unit that's very portable.

Try http://www.reddit.com/r/wearethemusicmakers for more informed opinions.

I do the tape monitor to the "line in" port on my Zoom H2 because I trust it more than my mic input on my laptop.

I'm from the UK, but I got this one when it was on sale in some discount store, its not $10 but still worth it, you could probably get a non branded one for closer to $10

I agree, I bought a Droid on release day, and ended up starting to carry around a USB cable + one of these to keep it charged.

But occasionally I read things like "The Droid X has a better battery life" or "The Incredible is awful", and I was hoping for any hard data.

I'm trying to help a number of friends upgrade to Droids (everyone I know is on Verizon), and I know that battery life is a big concern for all of them- probably because it's the only downside they are aware of.

u/OriJuice · 2 pointsr/airsoft

A little overkill...I'd think an 1,050 mah battery like the Duracell Instant USB Charger would be more cost effective and useful.

This from experience though...We run the XP8000's as external BP for our cameras when we work on set, the only time we've used them for GoPro's is when we needed to do a time lapse over the course of a few hours. General rule of thumb with video is to not record more than you need too...Guys who walk out of an OP with 12 hours of footage and actually sit down and edit that are crazy. I'd rather just be good with 8 hours of run time and just pick a window I'm recording in.

u/illgetup_andflyaway · 2 pointsr/Charlotte

if you are going to do the transcription thing might I suggest getting a typing pedal. You will be able to be incredibly more efficient as you can stop and start (and some of them rewind and/or slow down) the audio without having to take your hands off the home keys

u/FireLaced · 2 pointsr/Twitch

Yep, I do this. Get a transcription pedal so it's durable and will hold up. Buy used/second hand on the cheap if you're not weird about something that someone else's foot once touched.

I'm also wondering this. I use Wreally (https://transcribe.wreally.com/) for transcription and wonder if a foot pedal would help. I've been looking at this one - http://www.amazon.com/dp/B002MY6I7G/. But I don't know anything about it beyond reading the reviews.

They make for pedals for pc for transcription and the like. I bet you could find one and repurpose it for your needs.

Something like this usb foot pedal Amazon

u/darbian · 2 pointsr/speedrun

My recommendation is to avoid the cheap Chinese pedals you find from a simple "USB foot pedal" search on most sites (although I guess even the good ones are probably still made in China, so just avoid the cheap ones).

I use this one: www.amzn.com/B008EA1K66 (you can find it for much cheaper on eBay). On Windows 7 I was not able to get livesplit to recognize it directly and ended up spending more time than I'd like to admit learning how to use AutoHotkey and writing a script to bind the pedal inputs to something else. I did eventually get it working though.

On Windows 8, Livesplit picks up the pedal directly, so it's really simple.

I suspect that this pedal would be equally good, if not better: www.amzn.com/B002MY6I7G but I haven't personally used it.

This is the hook knife that I use... there are lots of youtube videos about using and sharpening these knives. It is pretty fun to use once you get a good edge and learn how to wield it.

u/bushcraftcamper · 2 pointsr/Bushcraft

It was this guy: https://www.amazon.ca/Morakniv-Carving-Knife-Carbon-Steel/dp/B00343VCCK?ie=UTF8&*Version*=1&*entries*=0 had two bevels, not sure why, maybe they changed their grind in new productions. When did you get yours? Mine was about two years ago when I just started carving. I got it to a useable state but the shape wasn't as good as the deep wood ventures one I got. I don't even use the mora anymore.

u/tigermaple · 2 pointsr/turning

Carving and turning go together pretty well- what you learn in one will help you with the other and vice versa. (Technically turning is a type of carving- the lathe is a rotary, reductive carving tool). Turners and carvers also share an affinity for using green wood that is relatively rare in the modern woodworking world as a whole. If you're not going to be able to get in to turning right away because of the cost, you could always get a couple knives (a hook knife and a straight knife) and go find some green wood & whittle some spoons.

I record everything with my zoom h2n. http://www.amazon.com/Zoom-H2N-H2n-Handy-Recorder/dp/B005CQ2ZY6 This is just to get my ideas on record, not to record an album. But the audio quality is great and you could use it to put out listenable tracks if you so desired.

It can record in stereo (two tracks), directional, or stereo with one track. Also it has a physical gain switch you can adjust while recording to get the right setting.

I use it to record both my guitar and voice. It can take a bit of fiddling to get the right mic placement to get a good balance of the vocals and guitar/amp but it's not that hard. Zoom also has a $100 recorder. There are cheaper ways to record like others have said. I used to record with my phone's mic.

u/hipduf · 2 pointsr/Nikon

I use a Zoom H2:

https://www.amazon.ca/Zoom-H2N-H2n-Handy-Recorder/dp/B005CQ2ZY6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1492207444&sr=8-1&keywords=h2+zoom

You don't need to worry about microphone wires getting caught (although you can hook an external mic to the Zoom) and you can place it exactly where you want to get best sound. Provides stereo, surround or mono.

You will need to sync the sound with your video track in post, but that's simple with most any video editing software.

One of the best video tools I've bought.

u/klaqua · 2 pointsr/videography

Let me trow my two cents into the ring.

When you say HQ video I assume you mean 1080p. That can be had much cheaper and that at good quality. More than good enough for a studio setting and interview work.

This is a good perspective by Casey Neistat on gear you need:
https://youtu.be/nLSUrTxquyE

With that being said, what most people forget is that lighting, the audio, knowing how to setup and just a little prep that can make all the difference.

In all honesty you could just buy this:

u/StargatePioneer · 2 pointsr/podcasting

I own a Zoom H5 and if I had to guess that looks more like a Zoom H2n to me.

u/areyouinsanelikeme · 2 pointsr/Showerthoughts
u/tillermite · 2 pointsr/Overwatch

It looks like you can buy them from amazon or ebay for fairly cheap. The Amazon one is fancier by recording the audio directly from the audio port on your computer (possibly a phone as well unless you find yourself without that apple adapter thing). The ebay one you just tap and record anything. Interestingly enough, these singing cards have been around since the late 90s, I found an article on the New York Times about them. The NY Times only allows you to read 10 articles for free a month in case you don't have a subscription (who would honestly).

My first thought when seeing this card was that I could never be creatively enough to make it, but maybe this inspires someone to make one of their own. /u/kanokawn tell your best friend he/she is amazing

I have a few bluetooth speakers, by far the best one I have is the Bose Soundlink II http://www.amazon.com/Bose®-SoundLink®-Bluetooth-Mobile-Speaker/dp/B0090Z3SPU/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1394205890&sr=1-1&keywords=bose+soundlink+II

It's a bit pricey but absolutely worth it and it actually has a really full sound and good bass unlike most other bluetooth speakers.

Just steer clear from any Jawbone products whatever you do. I have had 3 a mini and big jam box and both developed problems and the customer support was terrible. Bose on the other hand has amazing customer service.

For half the price of the Bose the UE Boom is a really really good speaker and pretty much perfect for the type of use you're talking about:

You could get them a bluetooth wireless speaker, I heard this one once and it was excellent: http://www.amazon.com/UE-BOOM-Wireless-Bluetooth-Speaker/dp/B00CM0XHNS

They could take it with them, inside, on deck, the cockpit or bring it with them to the beach or on the dinghy. Might be a good gift.

Of course! We had two bluetooth speakers, and used a y-jack to plug the receiver (for the mic) into both so that we could have more volume. One of them is a shitty samsung bluetooth speaker that we had for years that we do NOT recommend you buy. The other one is https://www.amazon.com/UE-BOOM-Wireless-Bluetooth-Speaker/dp/B00CM0XHNS and it's a much better value for money! The mic that we used is: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07G812BR9/ And for how simple it is it worked great! We considered not having mics since it was a small gathering, but I'm glad we did - sound dissipates super fast outdoors! And having amplified sound makes it easy to make the speech sound more official and have people concentrate. Good luck on your wedding planning!!

u/I_Am_The_Mole · 2 pointsr/discgolf

If you ever get the chance to look through his bag, look for the oldest most beat up looking disc he's got, and buy him a new one. Google the make and model and if it's a putter get him two or three.

NOTE: Don't replace the disc, leave it in his bag. The reason it's the oldest and most beat up is because he loves it and probably would appreciate having another disc in that type to break in.

Option 2: Get him a small bluetooth speaker á la Mini Jambox or the Logitech UE Boom. These are pricey options, but they're at the front of the pack for sound quality. If you think he couldn't care less about that and just wants some outdoor tunes there are plenty of other options. I personally love having music out on the course (politely of course) and can't throw right (or stay aware of other golfers) with headphones in.

Good Luck!

u/stickbo · 2 pointsr/gadgets

It is pricey, but I would HIGHLY recommend the ultimate ears boom Bluetooth speaker made by Logitech. I am not a Logitech shill I swear lol. It is water resistant and sounds amazing for the size. I bring it to work and people are constantly shocked at how good it sounds for the size, I work outside so the phone speaker in pretty much useless(even my HTC one). Best gadget I've bought in a while. I use it to play from my iPads and numerous android phones, it connects seamlessly and without issue via Bluetooth and lasts me an entire work day,8-10hours, on one charge with juice to spare. At $200 it is expensive, dare I say overpriced, but worth it IMO. Bestbuy will let you listen to the different brands, at least they do locally, which helped me decide on which to buy. You can get Bluetooth speakers for very cheap or much more expensive, but as you can imagine the sound quality and features scale with price. Good luck, hope I did this right as my first post :/ .

I had the same issues/wants as you, and got one of these guys (not the same kind, put up the amazon site just as reference) a few years ago. takes miniSD (two slots on my model) and has a battery life for days. The spinner wheel on the one I got (X1, I think, its packed in my suitcase right now, or I'd go look) turned kinda wonky after a year or so. Still works, and I probably just have to clean it. Winamp or equivalent, or just drag and drop as a mass storage devise to upload songs.

I can definitely recommend the Sansa Clip Zip. Great sound quality, twice the battery life of any smartphone, cheap, and a max of 128+8GB with a 128GB microSD card. Put Rockbox on it and you'll love it. Don't get the Sport version, you can't rockbox it and the software is still a little buggy.

There's an Mp3 player out there with 2 microSD slots, supporting 2x128GB cards right now, and they promised support for 256GB and 512GB cards when they become available. It's an expensive device but it's an "audiophile" product with amazing sound quality.

Not necessarily at night, just whenever you're done driving for the day and getting ready to sleep.

If you want something small, look at the Midland 75-822 and a Wilson Little Wil antenna. That Midland CB comes with a car adapter that basically makes the whole unit a CB mic with all the controls on it.

Edit: and you'll need separate co-ax cable to connect the CB and the antenna.

What model/year Jeep do you have? Do you want a “full size” CB or can you do something a little lighter?

I leave my doors off a lot, so I went with a plug n play setup that will allow me to pull it off or lock it up every time I don’t use it. I have this Midland CB hooked up to a 3ft Firestik and have had no issues with it.

u/s1rgh0st · 1 pointr/Jeep

Yea it's a handheld. Midland 75. Opted for his one because I didn't have to run power. Also I can take the unit off the cable in the jeep and plop on a battery pack and stubby antenna (all included) and use it outside the jeep if needed. But the install was straight forward for me. Put mounting hardware together, place between spare carrier and gate, run coax through gate along the rollcage under the glove box. Hook up the radio and plug into cigarette lighter. Pretty simple. Just takes time. Fishing the wire through the gate took the longest, but wasn't difficult. Followed this guide, but using different radio, so no need for power splice.

I bought 3 of these a while ago for like $30, for general use. They work pretty well, but I'm usually pretty quiet and so I have some issues being heard. Gave one to my brother and he's never had a problem with volume.

The AntLion ModMic is also pretty cool. It's good, but I don't particularly like having another cable wrapping around in front of me. I usually attach the clip-on mic I linked above to the USB plug coming from my keyboard.

u/TimeTravellerSmith · 1 pointr/buildapc

Those 558s and M50s are really close, so I could easily see how you could go either way on them.

For a mic I found a $10 Olympus that works decent enough. I don't really use it too often because when I'm gaming and talking with friends I have a set of Plantronics 780s that I use rather than my M50s. I just like having one wire coming off my head rather than worry about two and clipping it on and off when I'm not using it. But the nice cans + cheap mic option seems really popular these days.

u/XaviertheIronFist · 1 pointr/buildapc

I personally use these headphones

with this microphone

Not only did people say my sound quality increased over my 80$ gaming headphones but my headphone sound quality skyrocketed as well. Maybe no directly comparable but it was still a jarringly nice switch.

u/grins · 1 pointr/arduino

I was considering this mic and any headset that has an over-the-ear clip. What type of devices are you talking about? I found this device, but I dont believe it would work as there isnt any amplification functionality built into it. Although, maybe I can fit this little headphone amp into the mix somehow.

I have looked into the hearing assistance device you link to and, according to its the reviews and reviews of a few similar devices, those types arent very good.

Thanks for your response.

Yeah, I might ask if a friend has an old iPhone or iPod i can hide whenever. Also I posted this on the megathread in /r/gadgets, but I was hoping you would know.

Would it be possible to connect this into something like this and plug it into my iPod to record sound? Or is the jack on the Olympus mic not compatible to the TRRS adapter?

u/readytodie718 · 1 pointr/PS4Mods

I did something else and it works like you won't believe bro I just plugged the tiny mic in my controller and the sound is good I keep my mic level to clicks above good in the adjust settings.
I just switched the settings for the audio I use a headset 95% of the time and I couldn't believe it worked. playing in multiplayer no one hears you pressing buttons or the thumb sticks if you get mad and rage there going to hear it but normal play they won't hear it . The optical Bluetooth transmitter works good no lag at all for me it's just me playing so I don't notice any lag. I can usb the recorded stuff right into my 'puter and abuse it accordingly with Audacity.

If you have headphones and a little patience you can stack as many tracks as you want (within reason!) by listening to the track on your computer through headphones while playing/ singing the next track at the H2. Download it, import it into Audacity, trim it, line it up... there ya go!

I use WireTap Studio on my macbook pro (got it with MacHeist), hooked up to a cheap but well rated button mic on the table. Sound quality is much better than I expected for the price. When searching, it was easier to look for microphones that were reviewed for recording meetings.

The recordings help me to go back and remember the little details that I made up on the fly and get them written down before I forget them. I'm going to try to use the last 10 minutes or so at the beginning of the next session to remind everyone what happened last time and get back into play more quickly.

If I had more money, I'd look into getting one of these omni-directional recorders.

May or may not be useful to you, Harbor freight has these fold-able solar panels that charge via usb @ 5V. I have one of these and they work pretty well. I wouldn't use it to directly charge my phone though unless it was an emergency. Rather I use it to charge battery banks. Mostly due to paranoia and the desire to protect my phone from fluctuating voltage. I'd prefer to kill that cheap battery bank if there's an issue.

Something like this would keep your phone powered for a day or three:

You might even use one of those portable USB chargers if you didn't want to break out the laptop. You'd have to be good about recharging the charger afterward, but you wouldn't have to run the ac adapter to the wall.

Then again, you might want a laptop to look stuff up while playing.

I don't know of any devices that will do that off the shelf, but I have an external booster battery that about doubles the life of my smart phone which I use for GPS tracking.

It is sort of awkward and bulky. But it works.

u/shaneisneato · 1 pointr/Piratebox

Looking back at your post I realized I slightly misunderstood what you were doing. But in terms of ruggedness and portability I think it would be a better option to just mount the pirate box in a case(which I am trying to find on that will work well for this, so if you have any ideas!?) and carry a separate device. The pirate box interface is all browser accessible, So phone/tablet/netbook/etc. would be fine to access it from.
I bought a rechargeable power cell This style was used and recommended in a pirate box build I read. I am really impressed with how light and small it is. We will see how long the battery life is with the wifi but I expect it won't be too terrible.

u/Teeter477 · 1 pointr/engineering

I've used these in several little projects. They're so damn cheap, and unlike most other brands (Anker, etc.) it actually has a physical switch instead of an automatic internal switch (a diode? I don't do circuits.) to turn power on and off...you'd think it was common sense but I guess your average consumer doesn't like switches on USB batteries... which can be frustrating because many applications don't require the power that it takes to get the damn things to stay on.

The one I linked is the only one I can vouch for. Duracell seems to have a few other options, but I can't say whether they're automatic (as I said, often bad), or whatever other attributes you may find undesirable. The only downside is that it's only ~1200 mAh, but that's been plenty for me.

u/gh5046 · 1 pointr/darknetplan

Still need more clarification.

Easy to move / portable? Yes. It's small.
Can it be used while it's being moved? Yes. You can use a USB battery back like this or this one.
Can it be used outdoors? Depends on the weather. You'll need a weatherproof case to use it in very humid areas and where it rains a lot.

u/cphuntington97 · 1 pointr/WeAreTheMusicMakers

There are many ways to go about this. I'm sure some people will recommend a computer interface and separate microphone, which is a very flexible option.

But for what you want to do, you might try the Zoom H2n. It's small, records 20 hours on AA batteries, and costs around $160.00. You might want to get a 32 gig SD card to max out your recording time (or borrow one from your digital camera). You could use this device to record your live shows as well. Record in WAV format for the best sound quality. You could edit the results with the free Audacity and then either burn cds (lots of options to do this) or upload to soundcloud or however you want to distribute your work.

If there's a bigger room you can record in, that'll work. Try not to be in a small space with a lot of reflective surfaces; you might get weird acoustic effects. Try clapping your hands and make sure there's no buzzing/ringing to the sound in the spot where you want to record. Another option might be a bedroom where you have a bedspread and drapes to help avoid unwanted acoustic effects.

I've heard some wonderful recordings made on the sidewalk outdoors as well. If you're recording outside, consider picking up this Rycote Mini Windjammer to go on your Zoom.

Good luck and be sure you share your results with us!

> Preferably uses AA batteries

You are one of us: r/AAMasterRace.

I asked a question about bluetooth devices for linking audio stuff together. The answers I got were mostly about AA battery speakers:

  • No AA Bluetooth devices exist? : r/AAMasterRace

The ones designed to work as guitar amplifiers would probably work for your friend. I'm not sure what you mean by this:

    > No Bluetooth, or Bluetooth can be completely turned off

Doesn't most Bluetooth turn off when not in use?

I have a Bose portable speaker that I got way before I standardized on AA batteries, but it does have a replaceable lithium battery, so it's not so bad. It supports external power too. It can do Bluetooth, but also takes a standard 3.5 mm audio cable. I assume when the audio cable is in use, Bluetooth would be off. You have to manually push a button on it to turn Bluetooth on, and you push another button to switch to cable. I think the fact it doesn't automatically switch is how you can be reasonable sure Bluetooth is completely off to conserve power.

I bought the first model of it:

  • AmazonSmile: Bose SoundLink Mini Bluetooth Speaker (Discontinued by Manufacturer): Home Audio & Theater

There is a newer model I haven't tried:

  • AmazonSmile: Bose SoundLink Mini Bluetooth Speaker II (Carbon): Home Audio & Theater

My only complaint with mine is it's too aggressive about turning off to save power, even when it's on external power. That isn't a problem in most cases, and other than not supporting AA batteries (it can use AA batteries externally), it's perfect. It's probably the loudest one I could find, but I suspect some of the cheap AA battery guitar amplifiers could compete for loudness, but not audio quality.

There are a lot of AA battery guitar amplifiers on the market, and I'm sure you can find one that doesn't have Bluetooth. Most of them are probably much cheaper than the Bose.

Does your friend already have rechargeable AA batteries?

A Sony Walkman MP3 player that is basically only earbuds.

This is the newer version. I bought a pair but sent them back b/c Sony changed the connecting strap and the newer set wouldn't stay in my ears.

I bought a pair of the older ones on eBay and they're still kicking. Got two years of 4-5/week use out of the first pair; I'm about a year into the second.

MP3 interface works with Windows Media Player & is basically drag-and-drop. I put the music on shuffle so I don't build playlists but I think that can be done.

I hate having anything in my hands or pockets when I'm working out, so these are perfect. I use them to run as well.

Perfection for me would be an updated version of the MotoACTV watch - something with GPS, heart rate monitoring, and about 2GB of storage + bluetooth so I can strap it on my wrist, put in some BT headphones, and go.

Photive Hydra Wireless Bluetooth Speaker. Waterproof Rugged Portable with built in Subwoofer and Long Battery https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00K589F8A/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apip_IxsjPLAeIZb9M

I got this thing recently. I had been eyeing speakers for awhile and caught this on sale. Ive had it for around 2 months now. I haven't done anything crazy with it but I've definitely dropped it dozens of times. And it is LOUD. I remember when the beats speakers first came out and being impressed, this thing sounds better.

It doesn't have a place to attach it to anything. So I rigged this up real quick based on a picture I saw in the reviews. It spends most of its time hanging in my garage. I've barely had to take it down to charge, pretty sure the battery life is around 8 hours?

For $30 bucks on sale I'm pretty happy.

Yes they do. I bought [this speaker] and it broke to my disamay. It's achilles ankle was that it was dropped with the aux plugged in, so when it landed it snapped from the inside. I have been trying to fix it ever since. Something like this? it has to be an "outdoor" or dust proof" or can it be just a regular one? so lets say i want to install it up near the ceiling... would I be able to leave it plugged in at all times or will that damage the battery? Do you think this will be loud enough? I just want it to sound good, not "tinny." Hopefully with some bass. Maybe I'm asking too much for a $100 budget :/

A cheap Bluetooth remote was going to be my suggestion, too. Something like this: https://www.amazon.com/Jumbl-Bluetooth-Hands-Free-Streaming-Receiver/dp/B00UUDZLB0/

If it helps, I've been using this for a while anyway. It's a Bluetooth stereo adapter with controls. Lasts 8 hours, charges with micro USB. With this, I don't have to worry about the wire reaching my pocket or getting tangled in things. Plug anything you want into it; I use Etymotic hf5. $22. Oh, I have wireless headphones. I've also had something like this: https://www.amazon.com/Jumbl8482-Bluetooth-Hands-Free-Streaming-Receiver/dp/B00UUDZLB0/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1473456304&sr=8-2&keywords=bluetooth+headphone+adapter forever. I love it. I bought some Kanoa headphones (like EarPods but with a better in-ear fit and waterproof) that I can't wait to arrive.

But I'm not loving having to upgrade a fleet of 2,000 iPhones and decide whether to spend $100 on new dongles for everyone or make everyone spend the money themselves. I'm not loving trying to help a few thousand users figure out how to use their phones.

u/RG1521 · 1 pointr/motorcycles

You could get a cheap Bluetooth headset for your helmet or you could keep your current ear plugs and get a Bluetooth remote like this one.

u/3Five9s · 1 pointr/bluetooth

Sorry, been a bit busy.

The device is either implying wireless, or a microphone.

If it's just wireless, This will give that function to any wired headset.

If it's a microphone This will do the same, as well as a mic for calls.

u/lysergicfuneral · 1 pointr/headphones

Yes, I have that exact one. I had it plugged into my Aux jack in my car after finding out that it allowed BT voice calls, but not music (A2DP). It works great. Connected to my phone quickly. Not sure how the range is, becasue it was pretty much only used in the car. I was impressed with the battery life, probably 10-12 hours or more. Can be powered/charged while using. Nothing to complain about in terms of sound quality, but it's not like a car on the Interstate is the optimal listening room. Just be sure to turn down the source volume a few notches or it will clip (same goes for all BT devices). It got annoying to turn on and off every time I started the car, so I worked out another solution. Sometimes when trying to turn it off, sometimes it would call the last number in my log, which was very annoying.

Not sure what you're trying to do, but I use this Jumbl clippy BT receiver in the gym. Great range, decent battery and easy to use. Can't workout without it. It keeps my phone out of my pocket where it otherwise might get smashed or fall out of my pocket. I use headphones with a short cord (which I'm dying to replace).

Get one of those portable radios and listen to the game while enjoying some beer at beer fest. Beer Festivals are a lot of fun, I've gone to the Winter Beer Fest in Michigan and have a ton of fun.

I just got a high end Bluetooth speaker called the Demerbox DB2. It's basically a super rigged indestructible Bluetooth speaker in the form of a real Pelican box. You can use it with Bluetooth or via an aux cable. The Demerbox support suggested that if I wanted to use a radio with it, I should get this small portable Sony radio. The Sony ICF-P26.

I don't know anything about radios. The one issue I think I might have is that I work inside a very large building. I think I might have trouble getting a radio signal inside there.

So I'm wondering if I need some kind of more powerful radio that can pick up radio signals better? Ideally, it would still be small enough to fit inside the Demerbox itself.

Yes, my mb includes bluetooth, however it does not support APTX LL (and i couldnt really find a mb on the market which does). So i use an additional usb bluetooth dongle. Range is not great with the usb dongle, so u might get something "bigger" with Bluetooth 5.0 and aptx LL support like this one. I think i would not buy the usb dongle again.

u/CrossedZebra · 1 pointr/techsupport

There's no such thing. You'll either have to hardwire, or just get a decent FM transmitter with 3.5mm and/or bluetooth. That would be your cheapest and easiest option really. Something like this (random link) - https://www.amazon.com/VicTsing-Bluetooth-Transmitter-Wireless-Adapter/dp/B01DDPUQTS

u/prajaybasu · 1 pointr/headphones

Bluetooth's default codec has high latency which means that the video/audio will go out of sync and the sound quality will be shite, at least for me.

aptX is a codec that's meant to fix that, and aptX-LL (Low Latency) would be the best choice for streaming desktop audio wirelessly.

Buy the FiiO BTR1, which is aptX+aptX-LL capable receiver and also buy a transmitter that's capable of aptX-LL (like this, this or this) and you'll not regret having aptX capable gear after trying to watch normal YouTube videos or game on that crappy default BT connection.

I believe macOS can utilize aptX by default, but if you have a Windows PC and do not have a 3.5mm jack to hook up the transmitter to, then you can buy an aptX-capable dongle like this and install the CSR Harmony BT stack because the default Microsoft BT stack does not properly support aptX.

I have a BTR1 and the CSR 4.0 dongle that I linked above and I get near zero latency unless I go too far (it switches codec to the default BT one if I go too far) - I'm not sure if it's using aptX-LL though, but it's definitely using aptX.

The upcoming FiiO BTR3 and the Bluewave GET also support aptX-HD apart from aptX-LL, but I don't think most media can even use such a high bitrate, so aptX-LL will be fine for now.

I guess you can ignore my advice if you are happy with the Mpow receiver (like many people) - I didn't use it personally, but my experience with non-aptX devices has been awful.

u/Gohmn · 1 pointr/headphones

What if I want my Bluetooth headphones to be amplified?

Pretty ignorant and still trying to figure all of this out and there doesn't seem to be a clear cut answer online.

How might I go about utilizing a headphone amp while still being wirelessly attached to my desktop? Apt-X LL is a requirement.

I'm listening through a pair of Beoplay H9s and I currently have one of these and one of these. Is it as easy as hooking up the former downstream from a headphone amp?

Would love some advice and/or product recs. Thanks!

Is an aptX LL transmitter compatible with aptX headphones? I just purchased a pair of Sennheiser Momentum 2.0 wireless headphones which support aptX. I am using them primarily on PC and want to add an aptx transmitter to my PC. Most of the ones available say "aptX Low Latency". If I buy an "aptX Low Latency transmitter" will my headphones still benefit from the aptX or will I have to get a specific transmitter that is aptX only?

Here is one example,

Will these work with my headphones? If not, any recommendations?

For the radio, one option is a Bluetooth FM transmitter that plugs into the cigarette lighter. You can pair your phone with it via Bluetooth or it also supports an aux cable connection if needed. Honestly you might want to look for a new FM transmitter. Sounds like yours is pretty weak. I got one just like you described in Amazon for $15 and it works great. Even if a channel is occupied this thing is powerful enough to override whatever's being broadcast, and there's almost no interference once I find a channel thats mostly static. Here's the one I got if you're interested.

u/xodakahn · 1 pointr/siriusxm

They aren't dumb questions. Yes, with two car kits and a home kit it would be extremely easy to switch between car, truck and dorm. I'm not sure if this is still the same, but the dorm could be a bigger issue. Back in the older days, the home kits needed the antenna to have a good line of sight with the satellite and with my XM radios, I sometimes had to have the antenna outside. The dorm probably wouldn't allow that.

But one thing to consider is what I do now. I do everything through my phone and either the car's bluetooth. I have an older car and use one of these bluetooth FM transmitters. It sounds good. And if you already have an account the online is pretty cheap.

The data costs could be cheaper than a radio, two car kits and a home kit.

u/Amoyamoyamoya · 1 pointr/Nissan

Sorry, I Googled "2010 Maxima interiors" and saw a photo showing what looked like a base head-unit and it had an AUX port. The photo could've been mis-labelled.

If there's no AUX port then you would have to use a Bluetooth to FM radio dongle like this or this.

Or replace the entire head-unit if you want a modern solution that fully interfaces with your phone.

By UE Boom 2, do you mean the UE MEGABOOM? If you paid $270 for the Boom 2, then you got ripped pretty hard.

I use the MEGABOOM at work in a warehouse, and that baby pumps out sound for it's size. It blows the BOOM/BOOM 2 clear out of the water. Easily the best effortlessly portable bluetooth speaker I've owned, and I've went through 4 different brands at work. It has the best sound quality:volume ratio of all four. It doesn't distort at max volume, and lasts a solid 3 hours at max volume in 35 degrees Fahrenheit (I work in a giant refrigerator. The cold nukes battery life.). I can still make out the music it's playing over the Tailgator that coworkers have.

If you can spare the space, go with the Tailgater. It lasts me all day at work (8 to 10 hours) at 75% volume and it will only lose 1 bar of battery out of 4, and it's surprisingly cheap for what it is. It will distort if you max out both your bluetooth device and the speaker itself, though. However, if you're looking for something portable with some low end, this will satisfy your needs. Oh, and it comes with a microphone. Never used it, but just pointing it out.

We swear by our UE BOOM blue tooth speaker. It's portable and the sound quality is amazing. This tiny thing gets loud! It's also water resistant so can withstand some splashing from our grown up cannon balls. My parents also use one when golfing. They have had theirs for a few years and it has really held up. Also the battery life is amazing. I am buying us a second one because we saw a call blue one with a wave pattern that is much cooler than our blue one. The range is great to. If what you're looking to do is record random objects, I wouldn't recommend a USB mic. I'd more recommend something like this

It's a portable field recorder, I linked to the Edirol because I have one of the older models, and it's fantastic for exactly what you're looking to do. You can get good field recorders for cheaper as well, like the Zoom H2

..Also found this great article from B&H on handheld recorders linky.

Not sure about the specific knife linked to, but what you're looking for is a hook knife. Here's an amazon link: http://amzn.to/1gM5iIp or just do a google search for hook knife. Roy Underhill has a pretty good video of a spoon carver using one in episode S06e02. I tried to find a link to the episode, but the best I could do is a promo from youtube: http://bit.ly/1fKRppr. Your local PBS affiliate (presuming you're in the US) likely has the episode available to watch for free. Otherwise there are plenty of youtube videos detailing the use of a hook knife as well. I hope this helps.

I hope I'm not too late for this.

I'm looking to get some decent portable audio setup that I could use at college this coming fall. I asked a buddy of mine what he would recommend and he mentioned that the Bose Soundlink Mini would be a possibility.

Budget: I'm looking to spend no more than $300. That is the absolute maximum, but I would prefer to spend about $200

What am I looking for: I want something I can move back and forth from my dorm back home (4 hour drive) fairly easily. Something with Bluetooth would be nice also so I can play music from my phone, but something I could still use with my laptop if I choose to.

How would I use it: I will be using it to listen to music most, watching movies and tv, and maybe the occasional gaming session. I also want something I can link up with my phone with via Bluetooth but can also use my laptop with. I'll probably put them on or under my desk and I'll be listening to them around my dorm.

What gear do I own: the only gear I own worth mentioning is a pair of Bose OE2's (they're ok. Not really worth the money though. One of the ear pads came off and they're a pain to get back on), and some Sennheiser HD 380 Pros (I absolutely live these, great sound quality, comfortable, and I got a great deal on amazon). Other than those, I have some shitty apple earbuds that are decent for carrying around with me.

Material: as I already mentioned, I'll be using them for music, as well as some movies and games. I listen to a wide range of music, ranging from EDM, to country, to rock, so all around good speakers would be best.

Am I willing to buy used: Not really, unless I am able to somehow find some pristine gear

If anyone has any additional tips I would really appreciate it.

This is pretty unfortunate. In essence Apple is going to replace this with this in their stores.

The Apple that I came to love in the 2000s would have never done such a thing; even when they released the HiFi, competitors' products remained in the stores (and the HiFi eventually died off as it couldn't compete with Bose's sounddock).

Apple's products (Beats notwithstanding) still are best-in-class; but I just don't know how much longer that will last.
