Ugh I don't even play anymore and I want to buy some dice...

come on look at the deals

u/jdeustice · 49 pointsr/DungeonsAndDragons

Amazon in my experience is one of the best places to buy the books when it comes to price. The books are almost always constantly on sale for 20% or 30% off.

It also depends on his role. Is he mostly just a player? An aspiring DM? Either way, if he already doesn't have it he should have the players handbook. Probably the Dungeon Masters guide, and a few others. The top books I'd say he should have (in order of priority) are probably:

  1. Players Handbook
  2. The Dungeon Masters Guide
  3. The Monster Manual
  4. Xanathar's Guide to Everything
  5. Volos Guide to Monsters
  6. Mordenkainens Tome of Foes

There's also a bunch of other books and adventures, but these are most important. For adventures I highly recommend Tales From the Yawning Portal, Ghosts of Saltmarsh, Curse of Strahd and Storm Kings Thunder.

Now, if you want to make the gift more special, there are a few of the more prestigious (or at least cool) items.

The Rook and the Raven makes superb notebooks. I use them, my wife uses them. I highly recommend them. They are a bit pricey for a notebook, but they are well made, disco-bound so you can add pages and customize your layout, and there are pages with special prompts to help you brainstorm and organize. Whether you are a DM or player, I highly recommend them. Start with either a player diary or DM planner, then go from there. Warning, your skills order these right away. They makes each book custom from scratch, so fulfillment can take a while (sometimes 8 weeks or so).

Want to get him the books, but make it a bit more memorable? Get the Core Rulebook Gift Set with Limited Edition Covers. Very nice looking, has the players handbook, Dungeon Masters Guide, and Monster Manual with special edition covers, as well as a special edition Dungeon Masters Screen. You can find it on Amazon (see link below) or sometimes at your local game store.

Dice. Dice. Dice. Players and DMs alike love Dice. Especially cool or special dice. You can look around on Amazon for large sets of regular dice (Wiz Dice Bag of Devouring: Collection of 140 Polyhedral Dice in 20 Guaranteed Complete Sets for Tabletop Role-Playing Games - Solids, Translucents, Swirls, Glitters, Alchemic Oddities https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01KP4T6TQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_rlERDbMH5C6AB), miniature dice (Wiz Dice Halfling's Haversack - 140 Mini Polyhedral Dice, 20 Colors in Complete Sets of 7, Miniature 10mm Pocket Size is Portable and Great for Travel https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07BWK7HVB/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_HkERDb6P484G7) or some sets of special material dice, like metal dice (TecUnite 7 Die Metal Polyhedral Dice Set DND Role Playing Game Dice Set with Storage Bag for RPG Dungeons and Dragons D&D Math Teaching (Shiny Black and Blue) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07CVT3RZR/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_GmERDbQ090HDB).
I would also check out Artisan Dice. Very pricey, but VERY nice. There are some dice from here made from ACTUAL stones like Malachite, and some even made from Bison Horn.

If he's a fan of Critical Role you should of course check out their Merch Shop. Plenty of cool items there, like apparel, maps, tankards, etc.

If he likes using digital tools at the table, you can always get him a subscription to D&D Beyond. It can be a very useful, intuitive tool.

There's so much out there, it's hard to choose. And everyone has different tastes, so its hard to make specific recommendations. If you have any questions, let me know. Getting new players more involved in the hobby is one of my favorite things. And honestly, you sound like an awesome mom. I would have loved for my mom to have supported my hobbies like this when I was younger, and it's impressive the kind of research you are doing. Hes a lucky kid.

    Edit:
Just remembered a few more things. Reaper makes excellent miniatures he can use in his games, and mini painting is a great hobby he can get into. Check out Reaper Miniatures (https://www.reapermini.com/) and some sets of paints. I recommend Vallejo or Citadel for paints, but Reaper also has some nice starter kits. For tutorials, have him look at YouTube, especially channels like Goobertown hobbies, Miniac, Black Magic Craft, etc.

Also, right now Reaper has a kickstarter going on. They've done this a few times before and it's been quite successful in the past. It's going in now and will end Nov. 1st. Basically, you pledge a certain amount of money and they give you a TON of minis at a much lower cost per mini. I think the core set is like $120, but I think you get well over a hundred minis, so it's a great value. If you don't mind waiting on the actual gift (fulfillment is expected around Feb 2021?), it can be a great way to quickly get a ton of cool minis.

OMG what wonderful kind people you are!!! Thank you for rescuing him! Who could have kept that sweet face locked up in a shed?!

How long have you had him for now?

In case you are a new bunny parent and need any tips or ideas take a look at the little guide on care I assembled below https://drive.google.com/open?id=1Z_IvDuy5Fr-VOKwBVBSmZih0m1ATCIquIMhYyFl4aIw - it is a it long but quite thorough. I really tried to include all the info a new bunny parent might want into this guide...

Poor sweetheart look a little sad... I am so happy he has you now! Try to spend a lot of time on the floor with him if you can. You don't have to drop everything and be with him, just see if you can do some of the things you usually do on the floor.. he will love the company and it will make him feel happier and less lonely.

I am guessing his situation was far from ideal and he is understandably unsure and weary of people. But with some patience, the right approach and diligence you can change that. :)

What works best with bunnies is always always letting them come to you instead of you going to them... silly as it is, that is what makes them feel most secure around anyone who is trying to bond with them. The best way to encourage them to do this is another silly thing - get on the floor. Literally just sprawl out and do your own thing and wait for him to come and explore you (I promise he will if you are patient). On the floor you are on his own level and you feel both safe and curious for them explore.

I would honestly suggest trying to really focus for the next few week on spending lots of time on the floor with him when you are home. Anything you usually do just do it on the floor. The floor is their level and where they feel the safest and that is best for bonding. Sprawl out and let him hop all over you. Watch TV on the floor and lean against the sofa for comfort or even when you are on your laptop. Basically just make a real effort to spend lots of time with him on the floor for a couple weeks and see if that makes a difference I think it will. :) Always let him come to you on his own terms when he feels safe, don't reach for him if you feel like he is not feeling safe in that moment (kind of anticipate his feelings)... some greens will help make you feel more inviting and attractive, and over time you will be able to pet him while he is eating, and then he will learn that humans mean yummies and they are safe and he will pop by for pets from you more often. :)

Watch a couple videos below:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T3rlWno7B8g - great video

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MS9HcoC19h4 - another good video

It's really about the amount of time you spend around and with your bunny on his level (the floor) - the more the better.. The food is not a way to bond, but something that initially helps lure him to you to learn more about you and what to expect from - this of it this way… To bond with the bunny, grab some treats (I suggest cilantro or small pieces of dried apple) and sit on the floor in the same room as the bunny. Spend lots of time on the ground with it in spaced out sessions. Just read or watch Netflix, and wait for the bun to come to you. Eventually, he will probably come up and sniff you all over. Sit still and let him do that, then he'll hop away. The next time he comes, offer him treats from your hand. Repeat several times, just sitting and waiting for him to come get treats. When he's comfortable with that, and maybe flopping or binkying in your presence and close to you, reach out and pet his head as he is eating a treat. Almost all rabbits love having their heads pet/massaged. If you're lucky, after a while He'll be coming to you and asking for it by putting his head near your hand.

_________________

He might also really like some things to explore and play with in his space. I'll share my favorites below:

Bunnies like exporting type toys - a tunnel, cardboard houses, willow and hay balls, chews, and treat puzzles . The two thread below have examples:

https://www.reddit.com/r/Rabbits/comments/an8cut/rabbit_room_ideas/

https://www.reddit.com/r/Rabbits/comments/ajf2vl/how_to_enrich_my_rabbits_life/

Also a couple suggestions below that are my personal favorites and all buns tend to enjoy:

Treat/pellets ball - feed pellets in it vs a bowl

Nesting cups - hide little treat bits between stacked cups, I have not met a bun who doesn't love these

Plastic slinky - most buns love these

Play house

Dig box

Also try homemade things - the best I found was an empty egg carton stuffed with favorite greens for him to figure out how to open. :)

Or something like this https://www.reddit.com/r/Rabbits/comments/be338f/diy_pellet_dispenser/

Or a homemade castle like this person did https://www.reddit.com/r/Rabbits/comments/bcl9p4/cardboard_castle/ - she has instructions on how to make one, send her a message.

Lastly try teaching him tricks like here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ke5N3tGLT_A - which is fun and a great way to bond with him.

They honestly made me think of those squishy gel tubes from the 90's.

I own all of these (plus quite a few more), and enjoy playing them regularly. Prices are approximately accurate at places like Target, walmart, Amazon, etc. Most games below can be played by up to 4-6 players (some more), but all support a minimum of two. (An important distinction, as many games require 3 or more players.)

$5-10:

  • Scrabble/Monopoly are fun if you're both into the classics. For some reason, these are both almost $20 on Amazon, but I've seen them for under/around $10 each at Target/Walmart.
  • Scrabble Slam (card game) - sets Scrabble on it's ear and adds some adrenaline.
  • A copy of Hoyle's Rules of Games and a deck of cards.
  • Uno - One of my favorites - An absolute staple, and works with as many people as you want, though you might want to add a second deck for more than 4-5.
  • Phase 10 - kind of like a cross between Uno and Rummy.

    $10-20:

Here, we start getting into some really interesting ones...

  • Munchkin - One of my favorites - Like pen & paper RPGs? This makes fun of them ALL in a way only a true gamer would get. Plenty of expansions if you get bored.
  • Guillotine - You're each executioners during the French Revolution, trying to collect the most prestigious heads.
  • Gloom - You're each one of up to four tragedy-ridden families. Play misery-inducing cards on your family to make them as unhappy as possible before you shove them off into the hereafter, and play happy puppies and fluffy bunnies on your opponent to do the opposite.
  • Fluxx - The rules are the cards you play. Start with 3 cards, then draw 1 and play 1 each turn. Oh, but now it's draw 3 and play 1, so you'll need to draw 2 more to catch up. Now it's draw 3 and play 5, so play 4 to catch up, except that someone played inflation, so it's draw 4 and play 6... etc.
  • Citadels Out of the hundreds of games I've played over the years, this is the only one I've seen that claims to have "intrigue"... and really does. Play the role of various nobles, each with different abilities, to gain gold, build cities, and steal from/assassinate your opponents to prevent them from doing the same. The catch? You each play different roles each turn, and the roles are chosen part randomly, and part secretly, so that no one knows who is who until it's too late.

    $20-30

  • Carcassone - One of my favorites - Lay down tiles to build cities, roads and farmland, and place your followers to claim them for points. Just because you lay something down doesn't mean someone else won't claim it instead, and claiming it doesn't ensure that you keep it. Lots of strategy involved, and plenty of expansions if you want to change gameplay. Good for up to 5 players, or more with expansions. Has some similarities with Settlers of Catan, to be mentioned shortly.
  • Chez Geek, House Party Edition - You're all college kids in a dorm, trying to get the most slack points with fun/cool things to do, while reducing slack points in your opponents with annoying cards like car alarms (no sleep), the drunk friend (drinks all your slack-gaining booze), etc. The basic game is under $20, but it's worth it to buy the House Party Edition for $25, as it includes some expansions and extras.
  • Illuminati - I haven't played this yet, but from what I've read, it's a blast. By Steve Jackson Games, the makers of Munchkin.
  • Kill Dr. Lucky - Here's a quote from the rules: "You have hated Dr. Lucky for as long as you can remember, and you've been secretly awaiting this perfect chance to do the old man in. Maybe he destroyed your dry cleaning business; maybe you think he's the leader of the vampires. Perhaps he's the only person standing between you and the family fortune. Or maybe his cat just keeps peeing in your shrubs. Whatever your reason, its good enough to push you over the edge, and now you absolutely can't wait to take the lying old bastard down!"

    $30-50
A bit pricier here, but some very interesting gameplay is to be found.

  • Settlers of Catan - One of my favorites - no game shelf is complete without it - Build roads and settlements using the tradable resources provided by the areas around your settlements, and the roll of the dice. Note: This is not a two player game. I made an exception here because it rocks, but unfortunately you'll need a third wheel to play.
  • Dominion - One of my favorites - I grew up with Magic: The Gathering, but disliked always having to buy new cards to be competitive. Gameplay is somewhat similar to Magic, though instead of plinking away at your opponent's health, you are gaining victory points. Also, Dominion includes all of the cards you will need for up to 4 players, and you "build" your deck (similar to Magic), by buying new cards every turn.
  • Ticket to Ride - Build your train routes across the US (or Europe, if you get that edition) without revealing your destination, because your opponents might cut you off!
  • Small World - Kind of like a cross between Risk and... something else. Control territory to gain gold, using various races with special abilities. Send your races into decline (continuing to own the territory until it is taken), while expanding out with your new race. Knowing when to send a race into decline makes all the difference.
  • Red November - You're a bunch of drunken gnomes on a doomed submarine. Put out the fire by shunting the flooded compartment to the burning one, but now there are two flooded compartments and you have to pump them out while the engine has a problem and oh my god it's the kraken. INSANE gameplay, but can be stressful. This has skyrocketed in price (from $30 to $50), probably because they're about to release a revised edition, so the old one is out of print. You might want to wait a month for the new version to come out before you buy this.

Toymakers don't seem to care. I've compared it and Eleven's in-store, and they are perfectly identical.

u/MorningDrunkard · 26 pointsr/gifs
u/syriquez · 23 pointsr/funny

Uhhhh. Pandemic is a good game if you want to lose horribly. I'd recommend Forbidden Desert instead. Many similar mechanics. A lot faster. Fewer "Welp, we lose in 5 turns and there is nothing we can do to stop it" issues. And it doesn't suffer as badly from the "Table Captain" problems. It still HAS them but not as badly.

My personal recommendation for a fun competitive game that's relatively easy to learn and doesn't suffer "You fucked me over!" annoyances? 7 Wonders. Another good choice in this theme would be Ticket to Ride. This also has the benefit of actually being available at Target or Walmart, so you don't have to try and find a hobbyist store or order it online. King of Tokyo and Tsuro are both fun, easy-to-learn games as well. I've seen all of these at Barnes and Noble, so depending on what you have locally, they can be easily found.

u/LevelOneDad · 19 pointsr/Parenting

"Welcome to our learning farm!"

My daughter (10 months) loves this thing: https://www.amazon.com/VTech-Stand-Learning-Frustration-Packaging/dp/B0053X62GK

... and I love that she loves it. But my heavens, is it annoying. If I hear the cow moo in the barn once more I may lose it. As called out elsewhere here, it lacks a dedicated volume control. It has a little switch that toggles between loud and STFU.

It also has a little slide-whistle sound effect that goes off N times depending on what you hit. Press "3" and it happily screams, "THREE! Whoop ... whoop ... whoop." That sounds seems pitched perfectly to slice through any other audio coming from elsewhere in the house.

u/MmmVomit · 19 pointsr/DnD

> So, I only have 30 minutes with the group once a week as a DnD club. I figure that I'm just going to be there to facilitate them getting into groups and finding their own DMs so they can play outside of the school day.

Yes, this sounds like the way to do it. It sounds like you'll have a weekly clinic for people to level up characters, talk out rules issues, work out group issues, share awesome stories and such.

> I also will likely need to start some fundraisers for game materials since we're in a VERY high poverty school.

Since you have so many players, you're getting into territory where buying in bulk becomes realistic.

  • Dice at $1.50 per set
  • Butt loads of paper for tactical combat
  • Meeples instead of minis

Even if $1.50 is too much for these kids to spare for a set of dice, if the kids are playing at school after hours, these can be club materials.

You might also reach out to book stores, game stores, theater groups, art stores, office supply stores and such to see if there's any type of sponsorship opportunities to help with some of this stuff.
u/rain41 · 18 pointsr/beyondthebump

I would return. They aren't safe or helpful for walking, plus it's huge and something that can only be used for a short amount of time. Instead get a push walker (this V-tech one is popular) and was actually recommended to us by a PT to help encourage walking indepedently.

King of Tokyo - https://www.amazon.com/King-of-Tokyo-Board-Game/dp/B004U5R5BI

It's like Yahtzee with a giant monster battle in the middle. Fun for adults, fun for kids.

I'd like to try my hand at answering your question about how to get into D&D, hopefully providing some extra insight and assistance along the way.

Both D&D and Pathfinder (one of its largest and most successful competitors) offer boxed sets to get started playing the respective games--in fact, this tradition of "all in one" box sets goes back to some of the very earliest days of D&D and its famous blue/red/gold/black books like Basic and Expert.

D&D 4th Edition (D&D4E) is the latest completed version of D&D, and represents a very significant evolution from what came immediately before. It has a heavy tactical focus, a very broad array of balanced character classes, some great online tools for managing your characters, and there's great ways "in" like the Encounters games hosted at many comic shops and game stores across the US. Since it heavily emphasizes the basic rules of "Striker / Defender / Leader / Controller" in combat (that is, someone to do lots of damage, someone to soak up enemy hits and hold them in place, someone to keep the other party members strong and focused, and one more person to affect and hamstring large numbers of foes at once), it can be pretty easy for a group familiar with other RPGs or even videogames to quickly segue into the proper roles.

You can start playing 4E today by buying The Essential Starter which contains just enough rules, characters, and game pieces to get started playing with a group of friends. The game pieces/maps are there to help track your characters' positions in combat relative to the monsters they'll face; 4E's heavy tactics focus makes this a virtual necessity.

---

Pathfinder was started in some ways as a response from the move from 3rd/3.5E D&D to 4th. Some players feel that 4E overemphasizes tactics, party balance, and simplified roleplaying mechanics to the detriment of the game, and so Pathfinder branched off of the open-source elements of the 3.5E ruleset and became its own, tweaked and rebalanced version of that game.

Pathfinder focuses heavily on character customization, a heavy "simulationist" element (e.g., there are very detailed rules for things like getting a job, building castles, going to war with other empires, alcoholism, etc.!), and compatibility with the very large amount of 3E/3.5E material available, in addition to the many Pathfinder-specific books that have been published in the last 4 years.

The Pathfinder Beginner Box, much like the D&D4E product above, contains just enough game pieces, character classes, and rules to get started on a basic adventure with other new players.

----

Unfortunately it's worth noting that both of these products are currently sold out on Amazon itself, and the third party sellers that do have them are a little more expensive, so you might want to wait to purchase them.

-----

Both games rely on similar basic assumptions, tools, and modular rule systems:

Basic Assumptions: Players control [usually] one fantastical hero each, and each hero is primarily defined by their "class." Quintessential fantasy tropes are covered: powerful and hardy Fighters; sneaky, thieving, dangerous Rogues; arcane spellslinging Wizards; and devout, healing Clerics. Each game also has more specialized classes, like 4E's shapeshifting animal-like Wardens and its spell-shooting Seeker archers and Pathfinder's bomb-making Alchemists and Western-style Gunslingers.

Fantasy races are also represented in both games, from nimble, mystical Elves to hardy, gruff Dwarves, from sneaky, affable Halflings to brutish, powerful Half-Orcs. Many other specialized races are also available in each system.

The players make their way through the world by describing what they do to a Dungeon Master, who in turn describes what they see and controls the plot, other characters, villains, and indeed, the world itself. In some cases, the players may simply explore the DM's world, learning and investigating, but sooner or later, a challenge is bound to ensue.

Both games provide rules for engaging challenges through combat and "other" skills. In either arena, the games calculate the effects of random chance and risk through the use of dice rolls. Even the greatest warriors can sometimes miss a slippery foe, and not every cut from a sword is immediately lethal; similarly, even an expert thief is sometimes stymied by a lock when pressed for time, but even such failures won't always necessarily set off the trap hidden within.

By rolling dice, players and the DM factor in this random chance. Then, bonuses and penalties are applied based on logical factors (as outlined in the rules). A strong warrior is more liable to hit--and hurt--with his sword, while a nimble thief is better able to evade attacks and dexterously pick locks. Running across a dungeon floor might normally be simple, but if it's covered in ice, the chances to slip and fall are far higher. Casting a spell from memory might normally be taxing--but altogether doable--for a wizard, but doing it while being attacked by a swordsman is all the harder.

Success or failure is then calculated against some target "difficulty"--either a set number (e.g., hitting a bandit in Leather Armor might always require an Attack roll of 16 or higher, after bonuses and penalties are applied) or against an opposing roll (e.g., a thief attempting to hide in the shadows in the middle of combat will be opposed by the general perceptiveness of the enemies he hopes to evade).

Successful resolutions to a problem--either by defeating the enemies before you or by overcoming the intellectual and physical challenges of a puzzle or mystery--rewards players in the form of fabulous treasures and experience points. If enough of the latter are accrued, characters gain levels, unlocking potent new abilities, while enough of the former is gathered, characters might become rich enough to buy a castle or even a kingdom!

----

Tools: Both games rely on polyhedral dice. These are often referred to as dX, where X is the number of sides on the die. d4s, d6s, d8s, d10s, d12s, and d20s are very common. The smaller dice are often used to calculate the damage of weapons or spells (the tiny d4 for a Dagger represents the unlikelihood such a simple weapon has of dealing a killing blow, while a massive greataxe's d12 showcases how a spot-on hit with one could fell even a mighty man in one hit). If multiple dice should be rolled at once (e.g., a Wizard's Fireball becomes more powerful as he grows in level, adding more and more d6s to the damage it does), then a number may be affixed before the "d" to showthat: 2d6 means to roll two 6-sided dice and add their results.

The most important die in both systems is the d20; it is used as the primary generator of entropy in tasks with a random chance to succeed. To attack, you roll a d20 and add your attack modifiers, then compare it to your opponent's "AC" (armor class) to see if you succeed. To climb a sheer cliff, you roll a d20, add your skill and strength bonuses in climbing, and then compare it to the "DC" (difficulty class) of the cliff. To hide from sight, you roll a d20 and add your stealthiness and dexterousness and compare it against your opponent's Perception roll, to which he or she has added their own bonuses.

In both systems, 1s and 20s are often treated specially, particularly in combat. A 1 is generally seen as an automatic--and sometimes cataclysmic--failure, while a 20 is not only an automatic success, it's a chance for a spectacular success (e.g., in combat, it might be represented by a "critical hit" that deals far more damage than a normal strike would on average).

Other common tools are character sheets, game pieces, and maps. Character sheets, either the official ones from the publishers or fan-made ones or even your own, are essentially standardized ways to format and showcase your character's abilities, strengths, weaknesses, and current status in an easy-to-read, quick-to-reference format.

For instance, characters' HP (hit points, a measure of their health and haleness that can be reduced by disease or combat damage) are often prominently placed, since it's such a vital number. Characters' abilities (e.g., strength, dexterousness, intelligence, etc.) are also tracked here, along with skills, possessions, and even magic spells.

Maps and game pieces, as before, provide a convenient way of tracking combat; if a special attack can only be used on an opponent whom you're flanking with an ally, being able to definitively state where you stand is important. Most maps are measured in 1" squares that typically represent 5 feet in the game world, and most game pieces fit into said squares (although pieces representing large creatures may be bigger!).

----

Modular Rules: Both games come with a central rulebook (the Player's Handbook for D&D4E or the Core Rule Book for PF) that describes, in essence, how character creation, combat, skill usage, death, advancement, and general adventuring are handled in the game. These basic rules, however, are designed to be expanded upon. The small selection of races and classes presented in said books are supplemented by many more in subsequent volumes (e.g., Player's Handbook 2 and 3 or the Advanced Player's Guide, respectively), and additional rules for things like running the game (Dungeon Master's Guide/Gamemastery Guide), monsters to face (Monster Manual/Bestiary), fantastical treasures to acquire (Mordenkaiden's Magical Emporium/Ultimate Equipment), and more (e.g., Ultimate Campaign, a book about kingdom-building) are also written. Both games are meant to grow with your needs, but most of it is optional.

I think OP is referencing something quite a bit different from a standard breadboard. It's probably something more like this:

http://www.amazon.com/Elenco-Electronic-Playground-Learning-Center/dp/B0035XSZDI/ref=zg_bs_2528073011_12

They also come with rather large booklets that give definitions of all the electrical components and what they do as well as instructions for dozens of different cool projects you can build with it. I remember mine had projects for like a rain detector, a security alarm, a morse code clicker, etc.

u/elteej · 13 pointsr/boardgames

I don't think KOT is technically on sale on Amazon. As with many board games, they are actually being sold by third-party sellers, Amazon is just fulfilling the order.

As a result, you'll often see these third-party sellers under-bidding each other by a dollar or so so that their copy comes up as the lowest-priced, and typically first bought. In fact, as I'm writing this, somebody has even underbid the price you listed and it's down to $26.72.

Historically, KOT has been sold for about $29 on Amazon:

Forbidden Island is great for kids and cooperative. Castle Panic might be a bit advanced for him at 6, but, again, it's a co-op game, so you can help him out. He could probably play King of Tokyo. There's always Hey, That's My Fish!. Also, pretty much any board game by HABA

While some don't fit your criteria, I'm a fan of many of the items from Fat Brain Toys. My daughter has the following from there:

  • Tobbles Neo - She loves this thing!

  • pipSquigz

Her other basic, non-musical, not-very-themepark-ish toys are (and some you mention you have, but still...):

  • Oball - These are extremely easy for babies of all ages to hold. Everything from Oball is fantastic.

  • Wood Hammer Set

  • Classic stacking rings

  • Classic stacking cups

  • A crap ton of wood puzzles

  • Classic wood shape-sorter

  • Counting Caterpillar

But, honestly, my daughter grows out of things pretty quickly. She has fallen in and out of love with her toys repeatedly. She also loves music, so as much as I wish she would just like the silent, simple toys... she thrives most and has the most fun with things that are loud and musical. I hate everything Vtech, but she could dance for days if given the opportunity... so as a parent, sometimes I suck it up and realize that despite whatever toys I wish or think she should have, she finds other things more enjoyable (especially as she became a toddler had had true opinions on things).

I'd actually got that for my 10 year old nephew before and he had a blast with it until he ran out of projects to make. Teaches them how to make all kinds of neat little inventions while they learn how circuitry and electricity works.

  • Dead Last is a recent game with a traitor mechanic. On Amazon now for exactly 20 bucks. But it requires a minimum of 6 players.

  • Coup scales well from 2 to 6. It is a good game of hidden identities.

  • One Night Ultimate Werewolf / Vampire are good games that work from 3 - 10 players. Good amount of bluffing and hidden identities.

  • And then there's always the classic Resistance: Avalon.

Soooo over the past few years, my husband has bought a lot of two player games. Since I think most games are designed for more players than that, I wanted to put in some suggestions because we have found some really great ones!

  1. Codenames: Duet - this was a gift from my cousin to my husband last year for Christmas. Wasn't sure about it when she asked me about it...but we play it ALL THE TIME. It's a cooperative game (I'm not super competitive), challenging but not mindnumbingly so, and there are so many different combinations of words being used that I doubt it will ever get stale.

  2. Roll For It! - another hit! You roll your dice and try to match them to the patterns on the cards. Different points values are allotted to each card and your goal is to get to 40 points. Fairly easy to pick up. It actually pretty fun with two people but can be played with up to four (and if you buy two sets, up to 8). It's also very portable for vacations!

A few others we like but don't play as often

  3. Sushi Go - a little complicated to learn but there's a demo on youtube that is helpful. The cards are super cute!

  4. Jaipur - we've only played this once or twice because it takes a little longer/requires a little more strategy but I really enjoyed it. I think this one is exclusively for two players

  5. Quiddler - We just broke this one open a few weeks ago so only played once. This is more of a word game combined with a strategy game. Again, takes a little bit to get the hang of it....but I think we will be playing this one a lot too.

I would recommend starting out with The Starter Set. It has everything you need to get started (basic rules, pre-built characters, and a set of dice), but you don't have to sink a lot of money yet.

If you all want to keep going, you will need Player's Handbooks, a Dungeon Master's Guide, and a Monster Manual. Those are your 3 Core Rulebooks. Oh, and all the dice, lots of dice.

Have fun!!

u/kodemage · 9 pointsr/magicTCG

So, here's all the details on how people store Magic cards meant to be played, with links.

The gold standard for the number of Magic cards to store is 75 or 100 double sleeved cards. As long as your container can store this many cards in one section it will be at least useful to the owner. Additionally, no one really likes storing their cards flat like your current box. Cards are much, much easier to retrieve from the container if stored edge on (top or sides exposed as opposed to your front or back, look at the pictures below).

The Boulder deck box by Ultimate guard holds exactly the preferred number of cards, down to sub millimeter tolerance. 100 cards and 75 cards

Ultra pro makes a pretty ubiquitous soft plastic box for 75 cards and 100 cards which does offer a little more wiggle room.

Ultimate guard makes nearly identical boxes. 75 cards, 100 cards.

They call their 75 card boxes 80 card boxes but that's referring to single sleeving and even single sleevers tend to appreciate the extra space for a few ancillary cards like tokens.

Also, we do not double sleeve with penny sleeves but inverted(open end at bottom of card) perfect^1 fit^2 sleeves and with regular^1 sleeves^2 over that.

https://www.tolariancommunitycollege.com/how-to-double-sleeve-your-magic-the-gathering-cards-and-why-mtg/

Being able to hold cards is great but there is also some benefit to being able to hold a whole deck box. The Arkhive is a popular example. It holds snugly 5 x 75 card boulders and 4 x 100 card boulders. It also holds soft plastic boxes but less precisely.

When storing dice they are stored separately from cards. Ultra Pro, Ultimate Guard

People will want to buy things for the baby. Some are useful things, many are not. What you really want is gift cards - Walmart, Target, your local grocey store, etc...

Do not fall into the trap of buying every toy, gadget, and outfit you can for your baby. The time your baby spends with her mother or you (or best of all, both of you together) is infinitely more valuable than any toy. This seems obvious to me, but then again I see so many families who are obviously broke but still have bought a lot of nice stuff for their kids. They don't need nice stuff, they need you. And they need you to have the money to fix the car when it breaks down, or to get through lean times when the next recession hits. I have a baby girl BTW, and her favorite toy is these nesting cups I got for $4.

Hopefully the mom will understand this too.

Minimalism is becoming a pretty popular idea, even among people who could afford to buy all the stuff. Here are some articles you might want to read:

https://redandhoney.com/crunchy-minimalist-baby/

https://littlehouselovelyhome.com/minimalist-baby-checklist/

https://www.theminimalistmom.com/minimalist-guide-to-baby/

https://theartofsimple.net/8-essentials-for-a-newborn-baby/

Whatever stuff you decide to buy, see about finding it on craigslist or local mommy groups on facebook before buying it new.

Other advice: If you haven't started this already, start going with the mom to every doctors appointment. The more supported she feels the better for everyone. Also the more informed about the medical side of things you are, the better for everyone. Follow the doctors advice. Go for walks with your baby's mom. Walks are a good way to bond and a perfect exercise for pregnant moms. The fitter she is when she goes into delivery the better for everyone and for your budget.

Last thing: Hopefully your baby's mom is enthusiastic about breast feeding. It's not easy for all women. That's why hospitals have lactation specialists. Breast milk is the best food for a baby up to 6 months, and beyond that they should still be able to nurse as they transition to solid foods. Breast milk is also free. Go to the store and check out prices on formula and baby food - it's expensive stuff, especially if you want the organic stuff.

A mini is a mini. It doesn't matter what system it's for. You can use a highly detailed, hand painted mini, or you can use a rock from the ground.

The absolute best bang for you buck: the Pathfinder Starter Box. It's around $35 on Amazon right now. You get 80 cardboard minis, mostly monsters, but a solid mix of male/female race/class combos too. Plus, you get dice, a dry erase mat, simplified rules, and more!

As for individual minis, Heroforge is pretty highly recommended, but they're not cheap. Expect $20+ for a single mini, but it is completely customizable!

If you want to really invest, get a cheap 3D printer and print your own stuff! I've had a Micro 3D printer for several years, and it still works great! You can find files for most DnD monsters thanks to an artist named Miguel Zavala.

Otherwise, just head to your local store and talk to the people there. Minis can go from $0.10 to several hundred dollars. I'd say you should expect to pay a few dollars for an average mini.

Personally I enjoy my Wiz Dice Bag of Devouring: 140 Polyhedral Dice in 20 Guaranteed Complete Sets

The dice seem well balanced. I don't have weird outliers like I seem to always get with Chessex, plus it comes in a sweet bag of devouring bag. Plop that baby down at a table and gamers ooh and awe.

u/Jowobo · 7 pointsr/tumblr

Depends on how much goes into that pitcher, but I think you can get far better deals.

The Chessex Pound-O-Dice currently goes for $31.95 on their website, but if you check Amazon you can get it for $20.76. So that's a full pound of random dice, bit over 100 in my experience, plus one matching set of seven.

Wiz Dice does a similar thing with their Bag of Holding, which clocks in at $19.99 for over 100 random dice (though in my experience less random than Chessex') plus a complete set. They also offer their Bag of Devouring at $22.29 for 140 non-random dice, consisting of 20 sets and a bag.

And that's not even counting the amount of cheap sets from less known (possibly lower quality) companies that are floating around.

Cardboard boxes with shredded paper, pieces of cardboard, paper towel rolls, and some hay stuffed inside with a tunnel attached is by far my buns' favorite toys. They love going in and ripping everything apart and finding hay/treats to eat. Bunnies love cardboard boxes in general. They'll rip them apart and move them around, chew on 'em, make hidey holes, climb on them. I'll even cut out some holes on the side of the boxes and stuff cardboard tubes frayed at the ends/stuffed with hay for them to have fun with.

Tunnels rank at number 2 favorite toy. Their favorite is the crinkley cat tunnels which have holes throughout them they can dart out. They like the crinkle noise too.

They love manipulating objects, hard plastic slinkies (not metal ones!) are fun for them ... and to watch, haha. Hard plastic baby rattles, baby keys, etc. Just no gel/soft plastic as it would be easy for them to bite and ingest.

I've bought cottontail cottages, activity tables, rosewood activity trees, etc--buns love them all! But they are expensive for sure. Well. My rest days are Tues/Thurs/Sat. Tuesdays I go watch a movie if one I want to see came out the prior weekend because its like 60% off at a theater nearby on Tuesdays.

Thursdays I usually get home and after sitting around for a while will sit down and try and study for some certifications I want to get for work. Then play guitar/video games for a while.

Saturday I hang out with friends and play video games or other random stuff.

I bought this Lego Death Star a few years ago and spent about 6 months worth of Saturdays for a few hours each Saturday putting it together. It was a blast.

Often I have family stuff to deal with which takes up much of my time, or I should be spending time studying instead of likely sitting around on Reddit or some other stupid crap.

TL;DR - find some hobbies you enjoy that are not the gym.

Edit* - I found some old photos of me working on it. None of it actually finished though. building the exterior and probably looking for a grey piece.

There are two currently popular versions of Dungeons and Dragons: 3.5 and 4th edition. 3.5 is (obviously) the older edition, but a lot of people still play it because they thought the rules system was more complex and interesting than 4th edition. However, 4th edition is better ballanced and far easier to play.

Pathfinder is also a good alternative to both, as it takes the 3.5 rules and updates them to be more balanced and easier to play.

Pathfinder and 4th Edition both have starter sets for ~$25 and ~$17 respectively. These are great options, and a wonderful way to try out the game without dropping a ton of money on books.

YAYS:

Chux pads, hands down, were the best purchase we made. Those saved us so much laundry and so many diapers. The link is hit or miss - one box we got was great and quilted, the second box was not quilted and they fall apart more easily. Which really sucks because we're not going through several a day anymore, so it has time to really fall apart before it gets soiled. Even the shitty ones are incredibly helpful.

A Haakaa breast milk catcher. Best money I've ever spent. I stopped using it every day at 11 months PP. 11 months of daily use.

An electronic nail file. I cut too close once, and decided I don't ever want to do that again. It's quiet, it has a little light on it, two speeds, and a bunch of different nail heads.

Stacking cups. Don't know why we even have other toys. Did you know you can throw them and chase after them and then throw them again, mom? You can put them inside each other! You can put them in the toy basket and then take them out and then put them back in again! You can knock them down when mom & dad foolishly stack them up! You can clack them together! You can bang them against EVERYTHING!!

This inflatable tub. It has a little shoehorn for the crotch so you can use it before baby can totally sit up by themselves. We're still using it because my child is dead set on committing suicide in the bathtub.

Sleeved bibs. Or as we like to call them, eatin' ponchos. We got some "art smock" cheaper ones to alternate with, but the Bumkins one is 👌👌👌 so much better. The art smocks are fabric-y on the body, so they stain.

A ring sling. No link because I actually borrowed from my local babywearing community. But I checked out a ring sling back to back to back. My chonker outgrew the Moby wrap I had (which was super hot and a PITA to get on and off) by 3 months when I finally discovered ring slings. Ring slings are like the cool, breezy older sister.

A yoga ball. We spent hours bouncing our child.

NAYS:

This Graco Swing. Well, any swing, but this is the one we had. Of the several swings at daycare, my baby tolerated one kind...for a few minutes. Obviously this is a my baby thing.

A walker. We got one used from a garage sale before we realized they're not really recommended for babies anymore.

Any chew-toy specific type teether.

Guillotine (BGG; $14 at Amazon) is a 2-5 person card game based on the French Revolution.

The game takes place over three rounds ("days"). Each day, you line up twelve noble cards. Each noble has a different point value. At the end of each turn, a player decapitates the noble at the front of the line. The player with the most points at the end of the game wins (novel concept, right?)

Every turn, you can:

  1. Optionally play an action card from your hand, which allows to adjust the line, gain points, or mess up other player's plans with various cards.

  2. Collect the nobel at the front of the line (unless your action card lets you do something else.

  3. Draw another action card.

In addition, certain nobles have special actions that trigger when collected, allowing you to draw more cards, gain points, or extend the day.

Really simple to learn, with a skill cap coming in 3 or 4 games later, once you've learned all the cards. Pretty luck based (depends on card draw,) but fun nonetheless. I play 5-6 games on a gaming night, then don't touch it for a few weeks. It's a ton of fun as long as it's not the only game you're playing.

We Didn't Playtest This at All. I bought it after seeing it mentioned in /r/boardgames/. I loved the one-star reviews on Amazon from people who didn't understand the game.

It's an absurd party game. The first time I played it in my 6-person group, we played six rounds. I lost the first five rounds before it was even my turn to play (but that's OK because you often get to take an action during other peoples' turns). In the sixth round, I played one hand only because I got to go first, and I was out before it became my turn again. It is still hilarious, inexpensive fun.

I especially love the cards that make players lose if they utter certain words during the game. I was the first to lose with that card, so I spent the rest of the round assassinating people by engaging them in conversation.

Helpful tip: play the game with people you enjoy being around. If your gaming group is composed of only people you know through gaming, forget it.

Welcome to the hobby, friend! Here's a few useful tidbits of info for you.

None of the Gundam kits from the last 20 or so years need glue. That's a standard feature across pretty much every Gundam model kit. So in that regard, feel free to pick any design you like. Not all kits are created equally, but a quick search across this subreddit will help you figure out if the kit you're looking at happens to be hot garbage (and there are a few that are).

To more directly answer your question, the starter set uses an older model of the classic RX-78-02 Gundam. The Revive version is a much, much better model. You can find it here on Amazon.

A panel lining pen (or pens) are not required, but certainly make for a better final product. They're pretty cheap on their own, and generally you'll want at least grey and black, and possibly also brown. Alternatively, you can get a pack of all 3. You'll also want so basic q-tips/cotton swabs to clean up your panel looking.

You're also going to need some nippers. Nippers come in a range of types, qualities, and styles. The best nippers are single sided (that is, one side is a blade and the other is flat). These, the infamous Godhands are hands down the best nippers on the market. They're expensive as shit, but worth every penny. If you're on a medium budget, Tamiya's nippers are the next best option. There are cheaper nippers out there, but they're gonna come with significantly inferior results. That said, a lot of that can be addressed with...

A good hobby knife. You'll be just fine with a simple, cheap X-Acto knife, but there is (in my opinion) a better option. My personal favorite, the Tamiya Design Knife. It's got a slightly smaller blade, which will let you get into tighter spaces with it. It also comes with a metric crapton of replacement blades. You'll want to replace the blade every couple kits, but there's a bunch of them in there. There same container that holds the replacement blades even has a second chamber to dispose of your old blades into.

Finally, you may want some fine pointed (possibly angled) tweezers for decal application. Finger oils can screw up the adhesive on the stickers. You can pass on this starting off most likely, but you'll want to get some eventually.

TL;DR, the starter pack isn't the best option. If you're after the granddaddy Gundam, get the Revive. Otherwise, pick your favorite design. The newer the kit, the better, generally speaking. Look at the copyright date on the box cover to see. Bottom left corner.

You're going to need nippers, which can get pricey, but the cost is worth it. Start with a mediocre pair, and upgrade to the Godhands once you're committed to the hobby. You'll need a knife, too. You can cheap out on this one, but there are better options IMO.

Optionally, get tweezers, panel lining pens, and cotton swabs.

Edit: other good starter kits

HG Barbatos is a great kit. The build process for IBO models is a bit different than other gunpla, though, as they have a quasi-inner frame.

HG 00 Gundam is another great starter. It's also the first kit I ever panel lined, and it was a great starter for that.

If you're wanting a Zaku, the HG The Origin Zaku II Type C is probably the best Zaku kit released to date in 1/144 scale.

Finally, I'd feel bad for not suggesting my all time favorite HG build. It was just a fun, fun kit to make and to pose. The HG 1.5 Gundam. It's got some really cool gimmicks and, unique colors, and an awesome design.

theres only one foot hole on each stand though, even though the packaging makes it look like theres 3. its off to the side, but the base is wide enough where they dont lose balance at all.

Who says you can never use them again? Who do you think you are, the DCI?!
Seriously, though, a lot of the cards are great for casual/kitchen table magic which is incidentally who they're aiming for. Sure, you can't bring them to a tournament, but if your friends don't mind then you can throw some in your EDH or other decks. Hell, I just now had the idea to put together an Archenemy deck using Un-cards and schemes!
Ultimately it's just a new and different experience that not everyone will be interested in, and that's okay... some of us like to mix our Magic with our We Didn't Playtest This At All.

Trial and Error

Stuff like aftermarket stereo (assuming a basic install of head unit + Subwoofer) are relatively easy, but also very easy to do very badly.

The basics are - everything needs Power(+) and Ground(-), and in cars a some stuff will get it's ground from the frame (door pins, etc) or engine block. Everything needs a fuse. If you're connecting a new wire directly to the Positive (+) battery terminal it MUST HAVE A FUSE OH GOD PLEASE READ THIS AND NEVER FORGET IT.

For example, on a basic head unit you have a bunch of wires, but they're all doing really simple things. 4 pairs ( 8 wires) are for speakers, each one has a - and a +. Then you have the main power, the ignition power, and a ground (used by both powers). Then you usually have a + and - feeding a power antenna/signal booster. So you really just have 3 things wired up - Speakers, Power, and Antenna.

If you really want to learn it, grab some cheap "Electrical experiments" kit and you'll learn quick how different components work together and what kind of mistakes you can make in a pretty low-risk environment.

These particular ones you just buy whole! http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004FEXUP4/ref=wms_ohs_product?ie=UTF8&psc=1 I bought them four of them on sale from Amazon for $1.50 each, so you can probably find a lot better deals than the current if you look around a bit. Also, they aren't really as flawless as the video shows, they need a lot of direct light to work and they get stopped up by little rocks and stuff pretty easy. Still really cool, though.

Most actual toys are played with for a minute, then just lay around. But... this is definitely a worthy investment:

The flat round stands are from Neca: https://www.amazon.com/NECA-Action-Figure-Display-Stands/dp/B00ICNW438

The ones with arms are the 5-pack from Obitsu: https://www.amazon.com/OBITSU-Assembly-Action-Figure-Transparent/dp/B00UUTBFGY

Also available as a 1-pack: https://www.amazon.com/OBITSU-Assembly-Action-Figure-Stand/dp/B002T3TXEK

I had bought the Neca stands for my Star Wars Black Series figures, originally, but they work OK with some Marvel Legends, but not all, since the peg holes on the MLs can be very shallow (and basically useless).

I got the Obitsu stands mainly because their round bases match the Neca stands, but also because they have a cleaner look than the Bandai Stage Act 4 stands.

The Obitsu stands do take a bit of work to get the balance right, though, and they tend to wobble a bit, but eventually they settle down. Heavier figure like the Thor have a harder time of getting the balance right.

They are pretty flexible when it comes to their configurations, though. The Star Lord and Captain Marvel figures are using the same stand, and are connected by a clip-on piece. I had run out of the flat base pieces, which is why I have them like that. The balance isn't super stable, and I had to use an extra piece to keep it from tipping over, but it seems to work.

Sushi Go!

Sushi Go! is a quick to teach, quick to play light drafting game. I love it as an intro to the drafting mechanic and as a filler.

No Thanks

Probably my favorite "light" card game. Very easy to teach.

For Sale

Great filler auctioning game. Every time I teach it we end up playing 2-3 games in a row.

Love Letter

A must own IMO. Quick and easy.

Zombie Dice

Under rated push your luck dice game. Plus zombies.

You should be able to pick 2-3 from this list and be happy with it :).

u/darc_oso · 4 pointsr/boardgames

My list would include a variation of games

Code Names - $16

Sushi Go - $10

7 Wonders - $26

Tsuro - $19

Castles of Burgundy - $27

Total: $98

Explanations:

First, I want to preface these selections: our play group varies in size from week to week with anywhere from 4-10 players averaging 5-6. So, we often get caught "splitting the party." That's fine at times, but sometimes, we all want to jump in on one game together because splitting up feels bad man^TM since we're all there to socialize in addition to playing games.

As such, I wanted to include games that ran the gamut and for the most part games that scaled well from 2-X players.

First, Code Names. Now, we've played this game so many times, we actually purchased the expansion Code Names Deep Cover which is a fun variant which adds tons of more playability. This is the go-to "party" game as, for our group, Cards Against Humanity has grown a bit stale. At least it hits the table much less frequently than in years past. Code Names is easy to teach, easy to understand and difficult enough for some of your more entrenched board gamers. In general, I find this a great starter to transition from your Milton Bradley games everyone knows (and hates) into board games that offer sustenance.

Secondly, I offer Sushi Go (cheating a bit here as you'll probably have to buy a couple copies for larger groups or just get Sushi Go Party). Sushi Go is our groups go-to game to introduce games that use a drafting mechanic and to teach that board games can be cute, fun, and delightful while also requiring strategy, maths, and a bit of hope (our group tends to dislike dice-rolling games so for the most part, we stick to games where we can mostly "control" our own fates - YMMV). This game is super quick, so you don't get bogged down at the table for hours. I feel for new board gamers, quicker games are a MUST as many people may not be able to handle the length many of our Beloveds require.

7 Wonders comes next. We tend to introduce this game right after Sushi Go as the mechanics are super similar and the newer players feel like they already know what's going on for the most part. There will be questions, there will be some confusion and oversight, but this game follows easily and feels like a natural step up from Sushi Go and gets players right into the mix of heartier board games. Oh, and I could personally play 7 Wonders every week, especially with all the options offered through the expansions Cities, Leaders, and Tower. The interchangeability of these expansions has kept this game on our table long past many others and continues to bring it back. Again though, YMMV as we all have different tastes.

Tsuro, our board game palatte cleanser. This is another quick game which offers a lot of replayabiliity with minimal rules learning. Aside from those positives, the artwork is what sent this board game over the top for me. I am mesmerized by the board, the tiles, and the pieces each time we open this. This game offers a quick break between your heavier meeple-laiden board games so even after we've surpassed "newb" status, we often come back to this.

Castles of Burgundy I included as a final game because ultimately, we need a game with a strong theme and wonderful mechanics which offer replayability from a more traditional Euro point of view. This game really surprised me. I loved it the first time we played it, and though it may not hit the table but once every other month due to time constraints, it always feels like reuniting with an old friend. It offers a setup for further Euro games and sets the scene on what's really out there in weightier board games. I know there could be other games that fit this description, but at the price, this game is amazing for what it offers.

And that's the list. I know there are many criticisms of these games and I don't devalue those. All my favorites have points in them where they fall a little flat at times, or don't elicit the enjoyment I thought they might, but many times, it's usually my perception and frame of mind. I can often come back months later with renewed enjoyment for them, so trust me, I know there are imperfections; I just choose to ignore them for the post. These games, while some may take a bit longer to learn, offer a great springboard into board games and offer the new player a slow wade into the pool without feeling too slow or drab as one might feel with something like Settlers of Catan. Will I stand by this opinion in 5 or 10 years? We'll see.

u/thethoughtoflilacs · 4 pointsr/infertility

Oooh, I looooove board games. From what you're describing I feel like Ticket to Ride could work really well; there are a good amount of instructions but they're pretty easy to follow along with (it's mostly for scoring purposes).

For something way more light/fun, there's also Sushi Go! or Love Letter -- they're both card-based games that look deceptively simple but are never played the same way twice. My wildcard choice would be Carcassonne, which is definitely more of a hard sell -- you build a Medieval French town with picture tiles -- but I promise is really, really fun. Again, the scoring is where it gets slightly more complicated, and it can be intimidating-looking, but the game is really fantastic. Lots of strategy and luck needed, and it's a really unique experience.

Whatever this is for sounds like it'll be a lot of fun!

In addition to looking to hook-up with existing gamers (and you should definitely check out that store), ask your existing friends if they'd be interested in playing. With something like the Pathfinder Beginner Box playing an RPG can be as easy as picking up a new boardgame.

I've spent 99.9% of my gaming (over 20+ years) playing with friends I made outside of gaming. (Often by recruiting players who had never played an RPG before.)

u/TimeTravellerGuy · 3 pointsr/boardgames

I'm a huge Pathfinder Fan. Plug for /r/Pathfinder_RPG

The best things about Pathfinder are the huge amount of choice it gives its players, and the sheer amount of content that's available for free online.

You can play Pathfinder casually with your friends without spending a single cent (You should probably buy dice though if you're not using a VTT).

Sites like d20pfsrd and The Archives of Nethys have nearly all of the rules available online, and you can play the game with your friends over the internet using a VTT like Roll20. If you're playing IRL, I'm going to recommend these great class-specific character sheets by Dyslexic Studeos.

I should note that if you want to play Pathfinder Society Organized Play, you will need to own physical books for each rule your character uses. I don't play PFS as I find some of thier rule restrictions limiting, and It's much more fun to just play with my friends.

Also, if I could recommend one product for a new group of players, I'd recommend you buy the Pathfinder Beginner's Box. It contains everything needed to get started, and a simplified ruleset that's easier for newer players to latch on to.

EDIT: I just realized that you asked for thoughts on the Pathfinder Adventure Card Game and not the Roleplaying Game. I've only played this a few times, and we got a lot of playtime and sessions out of the Rise of The Runelords set. There's a subreddit for this game too: /r/Pathfinder_ACG

u/yourdungeonmaster · 3 pointsr/rpg

Try Pathfinder's Beginner Box. Solid.

Cheaper.

u/redditlien · 3 pointsr/rpg

If you're having trouble getting started with Pathfinder try the Beginner Box It starts off with a simpler sub-selection of Pathfinder rules to learn the game and how to play without overwhelming new players and comes with some pre-generated characters and an adventure to jump right in.

If Pathfinder is what peaked your interest in the hobby I would say go for it.

u/feroqual · 3 pointsr/Lawrence

In addition to checking out here, I would poke around the local gaming shops. Rolling Gnome is probably a good spot to try.

Also, think about what type of game you're looking to play.

Are you wanting high fantasy, high magic, sort of like a mix of harry potter and Lord of the Rings?

Or maybe something more intrigue focused, like Game of Thrones?

Are you wanting to keep sci-fi and fantasy separate, or are you ok with a blend?

Are you wanting to solve puzzles, get into fights, or...?

What degree of complexity/customization do you want from your characters? (The simpler the system, the more same-y the characters are; as a converse, the more customization you can bring for characters, the more fiddly little rules come into play.)

All of these are significant considerations.

Now, I might be a bit biased in suggesting The Pathfinder Roleplaying Game, but it offers absurd customization, has an excellent beginner package, and all of the rules are 100% free (and available online.)

D&D 5e, on the other hand, has a significantly simplified system. This isn't a bad thing; it vastly reduces the amount of math needed while leveling up or changing what items your character uses regularly. This can make things easier for newer players, and reduce the overhead mid-fight if you have one or two people who have built batman-like. Additionally, 5e has a much...flatter power curve, and is better for a fantasy setting with less magic.

u/whowantstoknow · 3 pointsr/tipofmytongue
u/KarateRobot · 3 pointsr/rpg

Either the Pathfinder Beginner Box or the D&D Red Box Starter Set will give you everything you need to start playing a simplified version of the full games, all in one box. Buy it, invite friends over, unwrap the box, start playing.

The rules are written in such a way as to let players get started immediately, but the person running the game (the Dungeon Master or Game Master) will probably want to look through it for a few minutes beforehand.

If you like the tutorials, you might move on to the full games. I like Pathfinder, so I'll focus on that one.

If you want to play the "full" Pathfinder game, you don't need the Beginner Box, instead you need:

  • One copy of The Core Rulebook
  • One copy of The Bestiary
  • One set (or more if you want) of polyhedral dice, such as this.
  • One character sheet per player [PDF]
  • Some pencils
  • Some tokens to represent characters and monsters (pennies, nickels and dimes will do)

All other books you will see listed are optional: they provide more options, more content, more ideas. Don't buy them until you need more. You may never.

You only need one set of books and dice, but having more copies will make life easier. It's totally optional. All of the important Pathfinder content is available for free on the internet in multiple locations, so technically you could skip the books altogether if you needed to. In practice it's nice to have a hard copy.

Also, there are thousands of RPGs out there you could play instead of D&D or Pathfinder, but I would say try them after you've gotten your feet at least slightly wet.

These are quite...meh, better than wire cutters and normal side cutters, but not as good as good side cutters. That's because these are meant for children, who usually don't have high allowances, and don't do much besides cut straight off the runner. The godhand nippers that everyone uses and refer to universally as "Godhands" is the Ultimate Nipper 5.0.

Other good nippers include the Gundam Planet Nippers and Tamiya Sharp Pointed Side Cutters.

u/MyOtherPenisIsADick · 3 pointsr/Gunpla

-EDIT- HUGE data dump here, sorry about that! I like Gundam stuff, what can I say?

In my experience, Tamiya makes good stuff in general.

I'm a big fan of markers for use in touch-up work and for panel lining.

The "Gundam" branded panel liner markers can make a huge difference on some kits, but honestly it depends on the surface detail on the kit. Basically, panel lining helps emphasize surface detail and make it stand out more when the model is viewed from a distance. IMO panel lined models are usually way nicer looking than straight OOB.

IMO this is a good starter pack, as the "Real Touch" markers are all double sided, giving you more options for application.

Sharpie and other brands have fine tipped metallic markers, and those can make a HUGE difference. I'm a big fan of covering any exposed frame parts with a metallic color, like gunmetal or silver, and then do highlights / color separation in gold.

The other immediate purchase you will want to make is a good side cutter tool (if you do not already have one). Using an Xacto / hobby knife works, and using wire cutters or other tools that aren't made for modeling work will get the job done, but will leave you with jacked up plastic anyplace you make cuts. This usually gives you crappy looking nub marks that can really make the model look cheap. You can fix that with sanding, but it's MUCH easier to clean up a nub if you barely make any marks to begin with. A "side-cutter" is the tool you want. They look a lot like other kinds of scissor-style cutter tools, but only one of the two sides is sharp. The idea with a side-cutter is the dull side reinforces the piece you're cutting through, holding it in place and giving you a smoother cut with less stretching. The plastic turning white is actually it being stretched as it's cut.
Once I heard about side-cutters I got myself some GodHand ones. Those are like $60 so not what I'd recommend a beginner buy unless you're made of money. I think these Tamiya side-cutters are OK? Others on this sub will probably have better suggestions on this topic ;)

I've become a fan of sanding sponges recently. I definitely would recommend checking your hobby shop's selection of sanding implements to see what they have in the way of sanding sticks, sponges, and other abrasives. IMO you'll want like 500 grit, 1000 grit, and 2000 grit versions of whatever you get, and you'll want to use each of those in ascending order. Higher number = finer sanding surface. The rough bits are smaller and closer together, so you will get a smoother surface. I do 500 to get rid of the big remnants of a nub, then up it to 1000 once it's pretty smooth, and then 2000 when I'm just about done and just want to get a good finish. I use the coarser stuff first because it's way faster at removing plastic. You could JUST use 2000, but it would take forever...

The fundamentals of getting the parts off the runners as nicely as possible, and then getting them as clean as you can before assembly are IMO the key to doing good models. I'd recommend getting solid at this stuff with a few kits you don't need to paint before you graduate to also doing painting, it's a whole other set of stuff to learn ;)

u/crazypipo · 3 pointsr/Gunpla

Godhand nippers, IMO, is a luxury item. If you have cash to spend or really terrible at cleaning nub marks then having an extremely sharp nipper will help.

I have tried it and have to admit that it is great! Is it worth the money? No.

------

However, using a cheap nipper is definitely the main reason why you get all the stress mark. If you want you kit to turn out great, having a set of decent equipment will help.

I currently use this Tamiya nipper. My old one was also Tamiya but cheaper. It worked great though.

The trick is avoiding stress mark, beside having a good pair of nippers, is to cut away from the piece, especially when the gate is large. Slowly shave off left over nub with an extremely sharp hobby knife.

You can (and should) also sand the pieces starting from 800 grits and progressively work your way up to 4000 grits.

u/BishopMiles · 3 pointsr/Gunpla

I got a question for you.
How much do you want to spend on cutters?

Some notable brands for cutters are (listed from price ascending) Xuron($10-$20), Tamiya($25-$30), Gundam Planet($35), and then Godhand($55-$??). (There might be others, but I have found these to be the most popular.)

Right now I have Gundam Planet nippers. They are the best nippers I have had so far, but I have only owned one other pair so dont take my word to heart. What ever you do don't go for a $5 pair not worth it at all. I did that and I spent more time fixing the mistakes those clippers did to my model.

Personal opinion get a pair of Tamiya Sharp Pointed Side Cutters or Gundam Planet Nippers. Here is a [comparison] (https://panzercraft.com/articles/2016-01-31-tamiya-side-cutters-vs-gundam-planet-nippers/) between the two. In all honesty though I have no been able to replicate that slow cut with my GP nippers. Another point is I have been able to get pretty close if you scratch the white part with your finger nail it almost looks like the slow cut photo.

P.S. Really though all of your clean up with the nubs is going to be with sand paper and a razor blade of some sort. I just ordered myself a OLFA Rubber Grip Utility Knife, but you can also get a OLFA Cushion Grip Knife if you want one of them.

Holy hell... that picture on the package... as a side note, my friend and I have both bought these for our box sets and we love them. It's a little expensive, but considering how expensive the base set and ADs are, it's well worth the investment.

Well, a love for Dr Stone is a love for science. I don't know how old your brother is, but when I was a kid in the 90's science kits were way more common. I've seen some in Walmart and there's this $5 store called 5 below that has some but I'll look on Amazon and see what relevant kits I can find.

here's a telescope for $33. Senku's thing is space. Space is awesome. You may also consider seeing if your local college has a telescope, I was surprised to find out that mine does and it's open to the public!

Here's a crystal growing kit. Chrome loves rocks.

Here's a microscope and here's the one I lusted after after I saw one on TechTV Screensavers $18 so cheap now! Tempting...

Electronics kit!! I had one of these! My parents threw it away because they said I was obsessive about it.. now I watch Big Clive tear apart garden lights... Senku make a radio too, which I think you can make a crystal AM radio with this kit if I remember correctly.

i'm doing the same! brand new DW fan this year and i've watched from "Rose" up to "Bells of St John". should be able to easily finish up before the 50th. I kinda prefer the 10th but the 11th is easier to put together a costume for.

i found an awesome suit jacket at goodwill that matches his pattern pretty closely and i've found suspenders and bowties on amazon and ebay for under 5 each but the shipping costs are equal to the price which kinda sucks.

there's a sonic screwdriver on amazon for about 27 right now that i'm looking to get and i was able to get a couple freebie $5 amazon GCs by doing surveys and offers on swagbucks.

i'm excited for mine, hopefully i can get a bit thinner and have a bit more hair grown out by halloween and i'll be set. good luck on your search!!

I got mine off Amazon

u/phil_s_stein · 3 pointsr/boardgames

Was this meant to link to the deal?

edit: King of NY - $30, King of Tokyo - $30

u/wolfkin · 3 pointsr/boardgames

oh this is perfect. An excellent exercise.

$100 to buy games on Amazon with a newbie who has specific needs.

Ok so we're looking to minimize card games, adult players, 2+

  1. Alhambra - $30 - it's a fun game and it gets our requirements right out of the way. it's more than just a card game there's a board, there's tiles to play with, A nice amount of physicality. it's new player friendly and works with 2 players.

  2. Last Night on Earth - $45 - Again going hard on the requirements here. It may be totally cheesy and it might not last a long time in your collection but if you're gonna get this game better to get it when you're young in the hobby so you'll have the most fun. It's team based but works with one player teams. It's a zombie game with a lot of mini zombie figurines to play with. It's a lot of fun to play with.

  3. Blueprints - $30 - I want a dice game in your library and in my head the first game is King of Tokyo which is an excellent game but I don't know how useful it is for two players. Blueprints is easy to learn fun to play and performs well with two players.

    -------
At this point I'm about $5 over maybe a little more because i think i rounded down a few. I might have been able to switch a few things to get more games in but I wanted quality games that minimized or compensated for cards. Plus all of these games play 2 or more pretty wel.

    -------

    Honorable Mentions:

Jaipur - $35 - For a couple I think one of the best beginner games is Jaipur. It's a two player card game with a welcoming theme that's easy to learn and yet when you play it's as difficult as your opponent makes it. The games aren't long so even when you want to try and experiment with headgames you're not investing too much into it.

Looney Pyramids aka IceDice - $9-15 - Now obviously the one to get is the Ice Dice. It's two "stashes" for $15 vs 1 for $10. Ideally you want three stashes and you can play the most excellent "Space Chess" like game Binary Homeworlds

Bananagrams - $15 - Bananagrams is an excellent party game if you have the tablespace. Honestly this is the singular reason I haven't played my copy yet. It's light it's fluffy, it's fun.

Splendor - $30 - Splendor is an excellent game. Nothing feels good as holding the poker chips in this game. It's a nice strategy game with a dash of tactical planning if you want. You could substitute it for Blueprints and still have excellent picks. Very fun quick game. But it is card heavy.

Word ARound - $15 - Now most people probably haven't heard of this charmer. It's cheap, it's probably best as a party game. I happen to like the look of it but no doubt it'll burn out as you become familiar with the words a bit.

    -------
    Race for the Galaxy

I happen to love that game. If you're ever stuck may I recommend this awesome video tutorial.

    Modern Table Gamer

Also don't forget you can play online at BoardGameArena. Some people might be recommending Roll for the Galaxy the new spin off game. I haven't played it yet but I found the Miami Dice episode about it to be very enlightening. Both Tom and Sam speak highly of the game especially in comparison to the original game.

    -------
    Ticket to Ride

Excellent game I hear for two players you want the Switzerland/India map

    -------
    Agricola

I think this might be a bit heavy for new players

    -------
    Eldrich Horror/Castles of Burgundy

While I have played CoB i don't know it well enough to judge it. I didn't have a great time with my play but it was just one time. I hear lovely things about Eldrich especially compared to Arkham.

How about a sit and stand walker thing?

u/videogameboy76 · 3 pointsr/AskReddit

I wouldn't get a baby swing unless it's free or really cheap. Once the baby can start crawling or use a jumper, it's utterly useless.

Our son is almost 8 months old, and here are the toys he enjoys the most:

Luv U Zoo

Kick and Play Piano Gym

Sit-to-Stand Learning Walker

The Kick and Play they can enjoy from birth. The Sit to Stand works once they have some arm and hand control (3 to 4 months and above).

We put our son in the jumper once he was able to hold his head up and stand on a pillow (3 months). This is a little earlier than recommended, and you must not let a baby hang in a jumper or seat due to the risk of hanging baby syndrome (thrombosis/clots).

Before I start can you clarify which version of Werewolf that you bought? It sounds like you possibly bought Ultimate Werewolf and One Night Ultimate Werewolf: Daybreak which (as confusing as it is) are two completely separate games. If so you may want to change that purchase to One Night Ultimate Werewolf and One Night Ultimate Werewolf: Daybreak because those are compatible with each other.

But onto answering your question, I'd also suggest:

  • Some Social Deduction Games - Before you pull out Werewolf (unless if these people are gamers and willing to have a few awkward rounds), I'd suggest A Fake Artist Goes To New York and Spyfall would be even better if you want to play a game while driving (literally the driver can even participate).
  • Some 2 player games - Onitama has been a consistent hit with my non-gamer friends because it feels like chess but so much quicker. I'd also suggest Lost Cities because it's a nice little card game that has a ton of replayability and it's super easy to teach.
  • I'd also suggest Hanabi because it doesn't seem like you have any co-op games in there. Hanabi has basically become the co-op game I pull out for people that hate co-op games. It's also probably one of my favorite card games.
u/AColumbusCircle · 3 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

One Night Ultimate Werewolf

It's a Mafia-style party game, only each game lasts one round ("night") only, meaning it moves much more quickly, plus each player has a unique ability, unlike Mafia where most people are simply villagers trying to figure out who's in the mafia.

So much fun, as long as everyone in the group is into it.

u/penguin055 · 3 pointsr/Gunpla

By Zaku Revive, did you mean one of the Origin kits or the Gouf Revive? Because I don't believe they have released a Zaku Revive yet. As for what to build next, pretty much any modern HG kit is going to be easy to assemble, but the Revive kits are some of the best out there. Unfortunately, there is no Guntank Revive, but the Guncannon Revive is a great kit, and the Zeon side has the Gouf Revive and Gyan Revive so far.

As for panel lining, you just need some lining markers or pens (I suggest these). All you need to do is use them to fill in the panel lines on the kit and maybe some of the other recesses (you can look at photos of the kit with panel lines in the instruction manual for guidance) and then use some Q-tips to wipe off the excess.

u/hero_kohai · 3 pointsr/Gunpla

They are transparent stickers and dry transfer decals. for panel lining i used these gundam markers. they're pretty neat.

u/Type43TARDIS · 3 pointsr/Gunpla

I have found that the easiest (and cheapest) way to up your model kit game is to panel line them. It makes the color separation pop way more, and helps define the proportions of a kit much better. A three pack of the panel linking markers are on Amazon for 5-7$ usa (link below). I recommend using the gray marker for white parts, brown for red orange gold and yellow parts, and black for blue gray and silver parts. The markers last a very long tine as well.

Another way is to buy some sanding sticks (10$ roughly for a 4 pack) and work on carefully removing nub marks. It will really improve the final presentation on the finished model. Start with a lower grit stick to remove the nub, and then increase the grit to polish away the scratches. If done correctly (I'm still working on this too) it will look like the nub was never there.

I Hope this helps, from one modeler to another.

Sanding sticks:

Squadron Products Value Pack Sanding Stick https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000CDR5K8/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_AC-2Db3ZFSJ3K

Edit: also the panel lining will help the paint job pop. In addition I'd saw use multiple coats from the gundam makers if possible.

u/gamer4maker · 3 pointsr/ActionFigures

You can get these style ones in different brands (the one I linked to is BBTS), and NECA also make good base only ones here. Just a note about the NECA ones, they only work with figures that have normal size feet. Most of the Marvel Legends should be fine.

u/al_ien5000 · 3 pointsr/Funko
u/VaultBoy42 · 3 pointsr/ActionFigures
  • http://www.marauderinc.com/category-s/1836.htm
I can personally attest that these fit a lot of Marvel Legends and SW Black Series figures. Not necessarily all, but a lot of them. They're made for 1:18 figures, and come with two pegs and usually one works. Sometimes I've had to use a blow dryer to heat the foot first to get the peg to fit, but either way, it works. They're pretty cheap and go relatively unnoticed. They're kind of small so typically it's one stand per foot on a ML figure.

When this question comes up I see these NECA stands recommended a lot too, but I haven't used them.
u/Miran_C · 3 pointsr/starwarscollecting

They are these:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00ICNW438

They're OK. The pegs are slightly too large for Black Series figures, and since the peg hole size varies they work better with some than others. Generally I only need them for the female figures since their feet are so tiny. Leia doesn't need a stand because she actually has big enough feet in this costume, plus her boots don't have high heels on them (Ahsoka, I'm looking at you - this is a design feature I do not understand because I cannot imagine that Ahsoka the character would ever in a million years wear heels, but whatever).

I don't know why Jyn stands well - maybe because she's knock-kneed. :)

Then Wiz dice came out with their "Random Bag" (which people found to not be too random and usually was almost full sets, usually 15 sets, sometimes 14 and one incomplete, but only 1 was "guaranteed").

So then Wiz came out with the "Bag of Holding" with 20 guaranteed sets

Pick up the red and purple editions of Roll for It! It's a nicely portable dice game that is accessible for all ages and gaming-experience levels. They each play 4 players, there are rules for combining them for 8-player games. Alternatively, the Deluxe Edition has everything you need for 8 players.

I also highly recommend One Night: Ultimate Werewolf, which can play up to 10 players. You can play the whole game in 5 minutes and there is a companion app that guides you through the whole thing. High replay value, as well.

We Didn't Playtest This is a silly party-style game that goes very quickly. Players get knocked out based on the rules of the cards, and many of the rules stack throughout the game. Can play any number of players.

u/magicmagininja · 2 pointsr/magicTCG

http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/gruul-clans-02-03-13-1/ Gruul Aggro. First 2 matchups I was done in about 5 minutes, fortunately there was a guy at my LGS who was playing "we didn't playtest this at all." So I had fun doing that in between the first and second rounds. Third Round I played reanimator, and lost 1-2 against it. The next Matchup was jund midrange. first game I lost horribly due to mulliganing down to 5 and keeping a crappy hand. I won the next 2 games though, so I ended up 3-1. From my prize packs I pulled a foil emmara.

Just to add one more suggestion. I had something like one of these Elenco 130-in-1 Electronic Playground and Learning Center when I was really young and I probably built 90% of the circuits in the book. It's a lot of fun and they do a fairly good job of describing how the circuits work. You connect components using precut wires to "spring" terminals.

Ok. So very early on my daughter insisted on standing as much as possible. By 3 months she always wanted to be standing, with me holding her arms or by her waist. And, I indulged her.

To get her to sit up I would lay her on the bed(in the middle) and reach down and take both her hands and pull her into a sitting position. Slightly more forward. I would let go and stand in front of and make a big deal about her balancing, and she fell over to the side or backwards. I would clap and jump up and down. She loved. We played this game every day for 25 minutes or so. And every day, she got a little better and a little better at it.

And then I discovered This Vtech Sit to Stand Walker....Holy shit...She plays with this damn all friggin day!

I put the back wheels against the wall, so it doesnt move and i sit in front of it with my legs extended on both sides. Then she sits in front of me between me and the walker. Thats all it took. She was reaching and touching it like crazy. and when she discovered the removable phone I would stand her up and she would lean forward and hold onto it for support.

The front panel of the walker comes off and can be layed flat on the floor as well.

As far getting my daughter to sit and stand, this thing cant be beat. Its under $30 I would easily pay twice that. We have two, one in our house and one in grandma's house. If you want to motivate your son to sit up and reach try this toy. Its what really got my daughter reaching and pulling.

I have some pics kicking around. When I get to work ill send you some.

u/hapa79 · 2 pointsr/beyondthebump

Do you have any kind of play space you can take him to? I remember that age as being particularly awful for the reasons you state; I think they just need a lot more stimulation and new stuff. I would take my daughter to some indoor play spaces that had infant/wobbler play areas; it gave her a chance to see new stuff and most of them also served coffee so it was a chance for me to get out and enjoy myself a little more.

Failing that, just take him out to new places: grocery store, zoo, the mall, etc. It will help YOU if you're not stuck in the house with him, and any novelty is good for them as well. FWIW, it got a little less awful once my daughter was walking (just before 11mo), but we still needed to get out and do things so no one got bored.

ETA: We didn't use it constantly because of some of the worries about walkers, but a toy like this can really help when they're in the almost-walking stage: https://smile.amazon.com/VTech-Stand-Learning-Frustration-Packaging/dp/B0053X62GK/ref=sr_1_4?crid=1P7PD4SQWPT2M&keywords=walker+toys+for+1+year+old&qid=1569165982&s=gateway&sprefix=walker+toy%2Caps%2C206&sr=8-4

I just watched 00 a few weeks ago and Virtue/Nadleeh is my favorite design from that series. Kit looks great, I've been tempted to get one myself but I have 3 MGs on the slow boat from Japan that will take me a bit to build. To take your kit to another level, look into panel lining. I bought this set and it's suuuuper easy and makes kits look incredible, especially on a kit that's mostly one color like this (the legs of Nadleeh especially).

On a side note, I don't remember Nadleeh having this shield/rifle combo in the anime, any idea if this was from the one mission where they sent it out as Nadleeh instead of Virtue?

u/7x13 · 2 pointsr/Gunpla

Easiest and most beginner friendly would be the Gundam Lining Markers or Micron Pens

u/Hekaton1 · 2 pointsr/Warhammer40k

Gundam model kits are, well, model kits, of mechs from some anime’s. They look very unique, check out r/gunpla for more. These specific markers are simple to use: just run them into the lines and done! I got this set, which I would recommend: https://www.amazon.com/Gundam-Marker-Value-TAIYO-Corporation/dp/B00HY93GHY/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1535925628&sr=8-2&keywords=gundam+panel+line+marker&dpID=41KeV7gp0LL&preST=_SX300_QL70_&dpSrc=srch

Use gray for white, cream, etc. colors (I only used black here as a test); brown for red, yellow, green, etc.; and black for gray, brown, the rest.

Edit: they work well for tanks and terrain especially, where you don’t want to use a lot of wash but still want to have shadows. For them, I use a mix of this marker on the less deep shadows, and a bigger one on the deeper ones. Example: https://imgur.com/a/CycO1Wk the specific thick marker is the black one in this set: https://www.amazon.com/GSI-Creos-Gundam-Marker-Markers/dp/B0009AFN4Y/ref=sr_1_3?s=toys-and-games&ie=UTF8&qid=1535926026&sr=1-3&keywords=gundam+panel+line+marker+set&dpID=51ay1SKBe8L&preST=_SY300_QL70_&dpSrc=srch I’m sure you can find one of these individually too, I’m just too lazy to find it right now.

Great job first time out! I remember this kit fondly and can’t believe you found one. Everything u/levrin said is correct. If you are looking to continue, at the very least I recommend going out and purchasing an exacting knife/side cutters/ a set of paneling markers/and tweezers for decals.
Again. Great first outing and welcome to the hobby!

This is what I do. I have a lot of Harry Potter keychain figures because the scale works better (Dobby, Nifflers, Picket, etc) and museum putty keeps the wobblier ones standing. Marvel key chains are especially difficult because of the bobble head. My classic Ant-Man pop stands up on his own but The Wasp has tiny little needle legs and a GIANT HEAD so I ended up super-gluing her to an extra stand.

I have those. They are fairly good, but as stated by others, not all figures fit. I use museum putty or tak (the clear or white variety) and that holds feet which pegs do not fit to these bases if you have them weight balanced in not to extreme of a pose to where they would fall over.

These are the stands I was talking about, if you do decide to buy these stands and they don’t work you can try the boiling water method which is when you boil water and dip in the part of which you want to fix on your pop and you wait a couple seconds for it to soften and then take it out mold it to the pose that you want and place it in ice cold water and that’s should do it.

If you can find a local game store, I'd go and ask what their policy is on returns. You could just go with a gift card to the place, though I know that can be impersonal, but if they allow it on unopened games, I'd get him something small like Zombie Dice, Hive, Codenames, Forbidden Island, or Sushi Go (all between $5 and $20 generally). If he has the game he can return it for some dice, or something else he needs, but I think the thought of going out and researching what good games are out there is nice.

u/Xzeno · 2 pointsr/boardgames

There's actually a good amount of fun games for under $40 on Amazon that I would suggest looking at.

u/smashedkitten · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

My lil bro is the shit. He graduated law school this year & is getting his masters in Vancouver, BC right now. Throughout the whole time he's put himself through school as a sushi chef (and a damn good one too!). Although he wants to practice law in Canada, his dream is to have a small sushi resturant and serve excellent food. This guy always achieves. I know he struggles with depression, health issues, etc, but he NEVER lets it get him down. & he knows about my struggles & is ALWAYS there to support me. He always knows the right thing to say, and he's fun to ague with. (he's a good lawyer) I love him. I'm so proud of him. He amazes me for his accomplishments. He's awesome!

Every year for Christmas I give him a Sushi themed gift. I wish I could afford an amazing knife, but those cost hundreds. Last year I gave him an Andrew Bell Sushi Oh-No print for his collection. This year I would like to give him Sushi Go! game, cos he loves games, or Midori Sushi Magnets, cos his fridge is covered in cool magnets.

He deserves it because he loves so much and works so hard & is such a great guy.

Thanks for the contest!

Assuming you want to spend half of your money:

Star Realms: http://www.amazon.com/White-Wizard-Games-Realms-Deckbuilding/dp/B00HRGMPIU

Sushi Go: http://www.amazon.com/Sushi-Go-Pick-Pass-Card/dp/B00J57VU44

One is a deck builder like dominion, the other is drafting like 7Wonders. (If you want 4 player star realms pick up two copies). That is a grand total of $24/$36. If you add Coup OR/and Resistance/ Resistance Avalon:

http://www.amazon.com/Coup-Card-Game-Resistance-Universe/dp/B00GDI4HX4/ref=sr_1_1?s=toys-and-games&ie=UTF8&qid=1417653537&sr=1-1&keywords=coup

Which are similar (made by the same people), you could be three games in for 40 bucks.

Then add a heavier game or two medium sized games-- check out TableTop, or our "What did you play this week" threads for some ideas-- and you come out with a nice collection of games (5 or six of them) for about 100 bucks.

I'm not saying you have to get these exact games, but think about a few smaller card games with a bigger game for the most bang for the buck.

The resistance (avalon preferably) is 100% worth it since it plays 5-10... but what about days when you only have 4, etc. Catan can't do all the work forever.

I can give better recs if you edit to add more info; even if it's just things like "I like space. The people I play with like space... and Pirates!"

u/chipbloch · 2 pointsr/boardgames

The other option would be to get two smaller games, in which case I would recommend Jaipur and Sushi Go!. Jaipur is a strictly two-player trading game, and Sushi Go is a larger-group drafting game. Both are amazing games, and this way, your sister can have something to play with her husband and something to play with her group.

And then gifted out the dice sets at random during the game, then the MVP of the game got the bag of holding, and the Bag of Devouring went to a player of my choice (ended up being the guy without a dice bag, long story).

u/RedWowPower · 2 pointsr/boardgames

Guillotine is my favorite little card game, cheap to buy and everyone I've played it with has loved it. 2-5 players

u/EmmaBourbon · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

speaking of the french revolution have you ever heard of the game Guillotine

It's my favorite simple card game where the object of the game is to cut off the heads of people in power. It's hilarious... and fun.. and a great party game for 2-6 players. I've held a couple contests here and there gifting this game.. that is how much i love it. lol

u/dougmansion · 2 pointsr/boardgames

It's more simple than the games you listed, but I've never gotten a bad review from Guillotine. It's quick to learn, all the cards say what they do, it's funny, it's colorful, and has the right balance of randomness and strategy that lets experienced players play better, but other players always have a chance to get back in the game.

Set is another game I'd recommend, though it is a bit tougher. It's all about finding a pattern and calling it first, so usually adults/older kids have the advantage (though you'd be amazed how fast kids pick up on that stuff).

In my experience, Puerto Rico is very long and very difficult to master. Dominion is rather light and fast, but the interactions between cards take time to learn. As juniperapolo said, Pandemic is good (all the players team up against the board), though it can be a bit random and intense sometimes. Roborally is ok; it's a bit long, and, in my experience, one person ends up way ahead by the second or third checkpoint, and everyone else has no chance of catching up for the entire second half of the game. And I'm all for teaching kids Arkham Horror ;)

Also, if they have Catan, maybe getting the Seafarer's expansion might be good, or the 5-6 player expansion.

u/ketokate-o · 2 pointsr/xxketo

Board games are awesome. I wish my FH and I could play video games together, but I get motion sick from 90% of the ones we try. Board games, luckily, don't elicit the same response. We recently started playing one called Guillotine that's pretty fun!

Not quite true.

The large lego set ever was the Death Star II. This replaced the former largest lego set ever, the Imperial Star Destroyer. Both were part of the Ultimate Collectors series, which unfortunately is no longer available.

I know this because I have built, the Star Destroyer. I also have a fully assembled Blockade Runner as well as the Millennium Falcon.

I like to thing this makes me cool.

u/armada127 · 2 pointsr/videos

This might get buried in the comments, But I would just like to point out that there are two versions of each model; a more realistic expensive one, and a more play-set like one that includes mini-figures.

  • The realistic Star Destroyer (the one shown in the video) is actually close to $2000.

  • The Death Star, however is the play set one with the mini figures so it's only $400.

  • There is also a play version of the Star Destroyer for $400

  • And a model version of the Death Star for $1200.

Edit: LEGO is expensive, I've been playing with LEGO play sets since I was about 4. There is a lot of work that goes into these toys and it's kind of sad that they seem to be dying compared to the video game generation (not that I'm against video games, I love video games, I just also like LEGO a whole lot.)

Edit 2: My mistake, this is the one in the video which is $400.

u/tuna1997 · 2 pointsr/Gunpla

There is a list of recommended tools in the wiki section. I used tamiya sharp pointed side cutter this one: https://www.amazon.com/Tamiya-Sharp-Pointed-Side-Cutter/dp/B000J47Z4G until i switched to Godhands last month.

If you really wanted to learn the ins and outs of modeling gunpla, or any model really, something like the tamiya nippers are great. They're good enough to get clean cuts, but you'd still need to sand and cut off that last bit of the nub with a hobby knife to get really good and clean results, which can take time and if you're not careful with sanding you could get soften edges. This is all part of learning modelling, it can be tedious but this is all part of the hobby.

Getting a pair of godhands, I don't have to sand or use my hobby knife as often as I used to. When I do have to sand it's usually just to smooth out a very tiny nub, probably because the nipper blade wasn't flat enough on the piece. The nippers just cut so smooth and well (at least for now while the blades are still sharp), it's basically cut the time I need to get my pieces out of the runners by half and I make less mistakes (no cutting too deep with the hobby knife, no over-sanding). But godhands when just starting out, you do miss out on learning and mastering certain techniques, if that's not something you think is important I'd say go with the godhands if you have the budget for it.

Hope this helps!

u/Kariko83 · 2 pointsr/3Dprinting

Ouch, I would recommend using nippers that are designed for modelling like [Tamiya's sharp pointed nippers] (https://www.amazon.com/Tamiya-Sharp-Pointed-Side-Cutter/dp/B000J47Z4G/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1525891853) or God hand nippers if you have the cash. Standard side cutters tend to pinch and tear instead of cutting and with the brittle nature of resin they can take chunks out like that. I also recommend cutting 1-2mm away from the model itself and then sanding down the left over nubs after full curing.

u/Sam1051v · 2 pointsr/Gunpla

Apples to Apples, Dixit, Jungle Speed, Pictionary, Anomia, SET, Loaded Questions, and Jenga are a few that come to mind where the adults wouldn't necessarily have an advantage over the kids. Also Fluxx and We Didn't Playtest This are both hilarious card games that would be perfect for kids in that age range, but I have a blast playing them with other adults on a regular basis too; Spaceteam looks like another good one but I haven't personally played it. If you're looking for more involved strategy games, Ticket to Ride and Carcassone would be fine for that age, just require more of a learning curve. Cranium and Quelf are silly games that involve a variety of tasks (drawing, acting, singing, trivia, etc) and although they're supposedly aimed at adults, kids love them too (just skip cards that are too hard; or you could also consider the kids' versions of both games, Cranium Cadoo and Quelf Jr.). Uno (or Crazy Eights with a regular deck of cards) is always a classic, and you can always play charades or the category game!

edited to add: not sure about a good choose your own adventure story, but Mad Libs are always fun!

u/EnSeouled · 2 pointsr/CasualConversation

We Didn't Playtest This At All is an excellent party game. You can find it at most box stores with a toy department and maybe some game stores that carry cards and such.

So we found that the high chair we got for home use (a Graco one) leans back too far and doesn't give our son a good foot rest. I'm a big Feeding littles fan and if I went back in time, I'd un-get this high chair. Last week we switched to using his portable one (a fisher price). He's been eating much better since we made the switch. In our case, no chair at the grandparents or the uncle we visited so it's def been worth it for us. Plus it's now essentially our main chair. If you plan to do many visits beyond just your parents over the next 2-3 years, it's probably worth it. You could also look at a more portable style that you could take to restaurants. Our son is 15 months and restaurant ones are not great for him yet.

Cups! he used these so much as he was learning to crawl. We'd stack a tower and he'd scoot to knock it down! Throws them all over now. Best $2 I've ever spent. ETA I see they are $4 now but still worth it.

"The First Years Stacking Up Cups"

Probably violating rule 1 as it's not unique by any stretch of the imagination and to adult eyes they look exceedingly lame, but you can stack em and they are great at bath time. They were used for years and years in my household.

Books, books, books! My babies love(d) Look, Look! (three year old loves "reading" it to his brother), Black & White, Art Cards, the Babyfaces series (esp Hugs and Kisses and Smile!. The World Snacks series is also great; they're bright, (mostly) well-written, and not irritating. Plus, My toddler still loves them, and we started reading them to him when he was three months. I like Yum Yum Dim Sum and Let's Nosh! best. Indestructables are great for babies who eat books. And the Leslie Patricelli books have been a huge hit around here since toddlerdude was a wee baby.

Don't forget non-board books good for reading, such as a Mother Goose (there are also "chunky" ones that are kid-safe), Beatrix Potter, The Wind in the Willows, or even Shel Silverstein.

Toys for this age that I like are sensory balls, music makers, rattles (we had to buy two of those because wee babydude likes it so much), stackers, links, these bead things (a large, four-sided activity cube is gold for this age through toddler hood--like this), stacking cups, and baby's first blocks. We have veriations on all of these (or the exact one listed), and they are popular with both our three year old and the eight month old.

u/beegma · 2 pointsr/Mommit

I have 2 boys as well as working in child development. For a high chair I would recommend one that you can strap into a regular chair and also has a removable tray, for example. You don't need the straps (they get super dirty). I cut the straps off my space saver high chair and threw them away. For toys I would recommend the basics and stay away from plastic and things with small removable parts. Get wooden blocks, a cloth ball, a simple [doll](https://www.amazon.com/Fisher-Price-Brilliant-Basics-Babys-First/dp/B0015KTV2C0, stacking cups, ring stack. Babies also like to rummage through things and bang on things, so clear out a floor level kitchen cabinet of all the things she can't have (cleaning materials, food, etc) and fill it back up with pots/pans/large spoons. Let her go to town pulling everything out and banging it together. Obviously, when she's gotten to the stage where she can open and go through a cabinet on her own - then it's time to baby proof ALL the things.

u/InannasPocket · 2 pointsr/beyondthebump

My 7 month old goes nuts for: Tupperware (especially lids), the forbidden delights of carpet fuzz, the straps on anything, and tags (her tag blanket is only so so, she prefers actual tags).

As far as "official" toys go, she likes these soft blocks, plastic stacking cups (she doesn't actually stack them yet), a weird buzzing teether thing like this, Sophie the Giraffe, and the book "Everywhere Babies".

I will certainly post a video this weekend, keep an eye open for it, the bunny in that video is my beloved Gerry, who I lost last year sadly. I hate to admit I need help figuring out how to do it, my friend is going to help me with the video and pictures this weekend. Bunny Approved is one of my favorite sites for fun bunny brain challenges. Some of the same toys can be found cheaper on amazon though, I just do price checks before final purchase. My Bugs was much better at advanced puzzles(Sorry Gerry). The baby stacking cups are exactly these https://www.amazon.com/First-Years-Stacking-Up-Cups/dp/B00005C5H4?th=1 although Gerry's were a different colors. Both bunnies enjoy that one, and its an easy one to start with, in my experience. No matter what I tried, I just tried to make sure they were having fun, I never forced them to do something they didn't seem to like. I hope that helps! Would love to see some pics/videos of your mad genius too!

Just to play devil's advocate, you could justify the cost of the new tools if they are very well designed. The tools you've recommended are definitely good tools and I think any hobbyist would be happy with them, but that doesn't mean there isn't a reason to pay more. As an example, the side cutters you've linked are good cutters. But Tamiya does make a set of really nice side cutters that gunpla builders really like and recommend if you have the money that costs about $30:
Tamiya 74035 Sharp Pointed Side Cutter

I'm not as familiar with the other tools so I don't have any links for them, but if they have to quality to back them up there is a reason for the cost.

That being said, unless you to take the modelling side of this hobby super seriously, there is no reason to spend that much on tools unless cost really isn't an issue. And to add to that I'm skeptical that these tools are going to be any better that offerings that are already out there. Xuron makes a set of side cutters with similar features except that it has a plastic handle (which since I own a pair can say it's a really good handle) which is cheaper:
Xuron 2175ET Professional Sprue Cutter

TLDR: GW tools may be worth if the quality is there and you can afford them, but I doubt that this will be true.

u/zeWoah · 1 pointr/Gunpla

If I were to go back in time I would just not have bought it and bought a nicer version of each tool separately since I like to invest in the long run.

In my opinion, the xacto knife that comes with the kit isn't secure enough, ie it may wobble during precise cutting. I'd recommend just getting a hobby knife off Amazon or wherever.

The sidecutters do the job but they aren't great. If you don't cut close to the piece, it won't bruise the plastic, but I would still recommend in investing in a good sidecutter if you're really interested in modeling. I personally use the Tamiya Sidecutters. They're expensive but they cut through the runners like butter.

All in all, the Tamiya basic tool set isn't bad- it's a decent toolkit and you can still use it on any model and still achieve a great finish, but you'll just have to work a bit harder.

u/Vonnegut9 · 1 pointr/ActionFigures

If you do get the kits just make sure you have the proper tools. You don't need glue but I'll recommend it.

Here at the 3 items I'll pick up if you were to get this kit.

u/Mughi · 1 pointr/Gunpla

The cool thing about RGs and a lot of newer MGs is that the armor parts are specifically designed to hide the seams, so you don't have to worry so much about it. If you want an easier way to do your kits, invest a little money in a really good pair of side cutters, a good blade (I like to use 30 degree-angled blades, for better control). The old #11 X-Acto is too easy to slip and take off more plastic than you want (or part of your finger). Some fine-to-ultra-fine grit sandpaper is useful, too, but not necessary if your cutter and knife do a clean enough job, and you're careful about what you cut. I get my sandpaper at auto supply stores. You can get up to 2000-grit paper and it's a lot cheaper than buying specialty hobby sandpaper. Some fine point tweezers for decals and markings, a cutting pad, and maybe a panel liner or two, and you're good to go. An investment of less than the price of a good Master Grade should get you set up. If you invest a little in good tools, you'll find that the "work" part of the hobby goes a lot more smoothly.

Also: keep those old kits that you think you've messed up. Use them as paint hulks, practice cutting and panel lining on them, use them as victims in dioramas and battle displays; get inspiration from them! They're not mistakes, they're lessons. Oh, and remember that the pictures you see on the blogs and in the magazines are made by artists. Not everyone can draw, or play music, or write poetry, and not everyone can build $2000 garage kits and make them look like museum pieces. That's not the point. The point is that you enjoy it. If you aren't enjoying it, don't do it. But if you like it, practice, and you will get better and better, even if you don't become a Gunpla god(dess).

I just recently built my first kits as well, HGUC #40 Zaku II and HGUC #117 Gouf custom, and all I absolutely needed were nippers. Of course, I don't exactly go for perfection, at least not yet. But my nippers are some nice Tamiya ones that cut through the plastic like butter and let me get some really flush cuts from the start.

I haven't done any panel lining, and both of my kits look decent enough without it. I can definitely see where it would help the detail pop though.

This is what you want. I got this, and I can't be happier. Just sleeve them up before you put the cards in. I used Ultra Pro Sleeves but penny sleeves work just as well!

u/stabletimeloop · 1 pointr/Pauper

Top loaders for really expensive cards.

I normally use a thick sleeve idk what they are called bit they are normally a solid color or have a picture on them. And place it in a top loader.

Normally it's like 200 for 12$ on Amazon for non brand picture sleeves.

I sleeve all of the cards for card and board games. They start to show wear very quickly and my grandfather always bends the cards whenever he puts them down in Ascension.

I use very basic cheap penny sleeves to protect the cards. They're very slippy and can be irritating to shuffle but with so many cards and so many different games they do the job effectively.

I like these: 1000 Ultra Pro Sleeves.

I've never had any problem with durability, and it's tough to do better than < penny per sleeve.

u/robotsatemycat · 1 pointr/Pathfinder_ACG

I second penny sleeves. I use these---$8.25/1000.

Pros:

  • the thin, slick nature makes them shuffle really nicely, IMHO
  • unlike heavier sleeves, they actually cost less to use than it would to just replace the entire set of cards with new ones
  • they are actually less than a penny per sleeve (edit: sorry, that's my price with Amazon Prime (free shipping), but you'll come out around $.01/ea regardless)

    Cons:

  • as /u/Torvax said, they are slippery. I'm perfectly used to it and only occasionally do I drop some (when I'm handling a really large stack and I'm not careful about it)

Also as /u/Torvax said, Pathfinder ACG does have "many piles" :). But none are that large during actual play, and I have no problem with keeping cards stacked or anything.

tl;dr: penny sleeves are the only option that makes economic sense for Pathfinder ACG. I recommend either them, or no sleeves at all.

edit 2: sigh, I didn't answer either of your questions. The first one I don't know, the second...you'll need about 500 for the core set, and each adventure deck thereafter (of which there are five) adds 110 cards. I believe the Character add-on deck is also 110.

edit 3: AAAAGGGHHHH A THIRD EDIT! I forgot...another nice thing about the cheap sleeves: the player cards are actually designed to be written on (WHAAAT?) when you "level up" skills etc (tick boxes to check off). With the penny sleeve you can just Sharpie on that damned sleeve and a) not ruin your card and b) just grab another sleeve if you make a mistake or change you mind or something.

I played Fluxx ages ago, and I'd totally play it again. One of my favorite games is We Didn't Playtest This at All, which is super fun and has a similar play style as Fluxx.

u/humanehero · 1 pointr/PAX

Well, as far as silly card games go, I'm partial to We Didn't Playtest This At All and Fluxx which support 2-15 and 2-6 players respectively. Both games can be really quick or take a while, but I've always found them to be great fun, and they both have a bunch of expansions, if you find that you like them.

Of course, if you want to delve into the world of board games, I'm a big fan of co-op games like Castle Panic and Pandemic. In Castle Panic, you work together to defend a castle from oncoming hordes of monsters and in Pandemic you need to cooperate to keep viral epidemics under control while finding a cure. Castle Panic is great fun, a simple game, and easy to get into, but I've never found it an easy game to win which keeps it fresh. Pandemic is a bit more complicated, requiring a lot of strategy and cooperation, and it can be brutally difficult at times, but that just makes winning all the more satisfying.

If you and your friends like a little friendly competition, I'd suggest something like 7 Wonders or Bang!, which was the game that got me started down this path. In 7 Wonders, you draft cards to build a civilization and compete for victory points. It may seem a little complicated at first, but once you play a game or two, it really starts to shine. In Bang!, you enter the wild west where one of you is the sheriff, and the rest of the players are deputies, outlaws, or renegades, each with their own win condition. The thing with this one is that everyone's role except the sheriff's is hidden. You can play Bang! with as little as 3 players, but it really only gets good if you have 5 or more.

If you want to do some research on your own, check out /r/boardgames or http://boardgamegeek.com/ which has a pretty comprehensive database of all the board games out there with ratings and reviews.

He complimented my owl necklace (that someone gifted me from RAoA) and I showed him my Star Tours button like a total nerd, haha! He's amazing, and very down to earth!

I've also met the band Rooney 3 times (they're not super famous, but I've loved their music since I was 14 or 15. The second time I met them they had a show in Baltimore and I made my friend miss her curfew to wait around back and say hello. This is really excellent advice! Sometimes just staring at a book is not going to make it stick. Another fun way to get some hands on electronics experience is with those project kits built to teach kids. Doing all of the projects in something like this or this shows you a lot of the theory in a way that will stick better because you have actually seen it work. And they cost less than a text book.

u/jephthai · 1 pointr/electronics

Not the exact same brand, but some of these classic kits from the 80s are still available new in box. You can find, e.g., the elenco 130 in one and 200 in one kits on Amazon for very reasonable prices.

Didn't know you were talking about free-energy videos. Anyway, those are a complete hoax. Sorry, but there's no way to create free energy. As for your son, here's a list of electronics and magnetism science kits I would recommend:

I highly recommend this one, I had one as a kid and loved it!:

$34.99 Elenco 130-in-1 Electronic Playground and Learning Center (ages 12+)

$26.49 Thames & Kosmos Magnetic Science (ages 8+)

$24.00 Thames & Kosmos Motors and Generators (ages 8+)

$18.85 4M Magnet Science Kit (ages 8+)

And here's some nice assortments of fun magnets to play with:

$19.95 46 small-medium magnets

$34.95 100 small-medium magnets

$69.95 26 medium-large magnets

That sounds awesome, haha. If you're looking for good gifts sonic screwdrivers are always great, if he doesn't have one. Each Doctor has a different one (most of the time, 9 and 10's are the same and 12's is confusing to say the least) so they can make different toys for each, haha. [This] (https://www.amazon.com/Doctor-Who-11th-Sonic-Screwdriver/dp/B003FHXMDC) is a good replica of 11's for instance.

Here are two things for him based on his photography stuff. First is a lens cap holder which I have and its super convenient and really smart. Next is a level camera cube which just slides into the place where his external flash goes and gives him a perfectly level shot.

As for his love of nerf guns, I've found that this marshmallow bow is loads of fun and super cool, especially when you get a few for friends to play along too.

Here is a 4x4x4 Rubik's cube which I would never be able to solve, but if your friend likes it, then good for him! Also, if he already has it, here's a 5x5x5, a 6x6x6, and (just for fun cause its really expensive and probably impossible to solve) a pentamix Rubik's cube.

Also - because my impression of your friend is that he's kinda nerdy in a fun way - here are a few others: tetris light, portal bookends, more marshmallow shooters, shock ball, and a screwdriver.

Thanks for listening to me ramble [: and if you do happen to choose me, a surprise from my list would be super cool! Good luck!

This is a solar powered toy car.

Why am I showing you this? Because it's a toy that is powered by the nuclear fusion of a star 8 light minutes from here. How cool is that?!?

Oh, but I was supposed to tell you something about ME? That's tougher. Technically I'm also powered by nuclear fusion which occurs in the sun's core, but only indirectly. Also that's not a terribly unique characteristic, most people and animals and plants and all life on earth is. (Except for the random stuff living along volcanic vents deep beneath the ocean.)

So let's get more unique. Well I share 98% of my genetic material with a chimpanzee, and 50% of my genetic material with a banana. Shoot... That's unique to humans, but not so much to me personally.

Ok, how bout this? I once found a painting of an ancestor in the Smithsonian museum of American History and not only did he have the best facial hair OF ALL TIME, but he looked strikingly like my father would should my father ever choose to grow THE BEST FACIAL HAIR OF ALL TIME.

Wow, we have a similar taste in games, Awesome. I can't believe you actually expect me to suggest just one game with soo many great games that I have played... and so many more I have yet to play.

1st off some games you don't own but are on your wishlist and you should definitely get asap, since they are the go to games my friends and I play when we get together. Given they are on your wishlist I assume I don't have to describe them to you. Lords of waterdeep, a fun easy to play D&D game, Star trek Catan if you want something a bit different from regular Catan, and Dominion.

Ok. Now games you don't know about... How about a couple categories and 1 game per cat. so I don't ramble on too much.

Fast and Easy: King of Tokyo You and your friends are monsters trying to take over Tokyo. Roll some dice, attack your friends, but mostly just try to survive till the end. It's easy to set up, learn, and get going not so easy to win.

Slow, Complicated, strategic, with lots of pieces, and fun, but may make you want to stab a friend by the end: Twilight Imperium This game take a long time to play... seriously like a whole day. So maybe not the best for a board game night. If you can get a day with friends to play it, I would say it's worth the time. Basically you build a universe, pick a race to play as, and then proceed to form alliances or start wars with everyone else. With a healthy dose of backstabbing those alliances so you can win :p Use resources to build a fleet of ships and an army of troops then try to take over all of space while defending all your new territory. Moves are turn based so your plot to take over a planet can be ruined by a friend blocking your path or crippling your fleet.

The only real downside is the time it takes to play the game. We usually have to set aside a saturday to play. Getting started around 11-noonish and finishing up around 6-7. That said nothing is quite as satisfying as moving an entire fleet of ships to take over everything owned by your neighbor.

oh I forgot to add SPPrincesa is the goddess of all things board games.

u/mnh1 · 1 pointr/Parenting

I wanted to do mostly wooden and open ended toys, but my son adores the plastic ones. We buy things he likes. One favorite was this musical walker my parents got him for Christmas. https://www.amazon.com/VTech-Stand-Learning-Frustration-Packaging/dp/B0053X62GK

It was the only thing that made our last 20 our road trip bearable as the activity center detaches and can be played with in the car. 3 or 4 hours of different melodies as my kid experimented between stops for food and gas.

His current favorite plastic toy is a step 2 toolbench and a plastic drill that turns when he presses a button. His favorite non plastic toy is literally any doll.

With most toys my son either wants to be doing whatever I'm doing or he wants a toy that interacts with him or resembles something he knows. He loves cats and dogs and usually has good manners with them. He isn't interested in stuffed animals. He likes using his tools to mimic me with mine. He likes to pretend to cook and help clean. He loves to drive his cozy coupe around. He likes wooden puzzles, and his wooden duck push toy, but he adores his fire truck that lights up and makes siren noises. That one came about because we met a firefighter at the fair and got to see the truck up close. The next day my son saw several pass us on the highway with sirens blaring. Since then, he's been fascinated. My husband loves to encourage curiosity, so the loud firetruck came home. It's the new favorite car toy.

Personally, the noise doesn't bother me. My son rarely makes noise for the sake of noise.l, so we let him play with whatever he seems to enjoy most. TV and tablets are largely ignored where other kids love them. I think this is one of those things that depends on your kid.

Soft building blocks like these (althought I'm sure you can find cheaper ones). Is she walking? You could totally get her a push-around toy like this. My kid barely used hers and she didn't walk til she was 17mo, but I've seen other kids go nuts with 'em. Balls. My daughter has always gone crazy for balls of all sizes and textures. some things you already have like tupperware and lids or pots and pans and wooden spoons kinda thing. A fellow redditor has mentioned to me about letting them use shaving cream with food coloring in an empty tub to keep them occupied (I needed a mental health day and looking for ideas to keep her occupied otherwise). But only do that one if she's in your view obviously.

Something I just remembered, she loves brushes. She has a bad habit of climbing my vanity seat and messing with my brushes so I gave her a few of my old cheap ones. Try that, my girl carries them everywhere.

Hey Paul,

Happy early birthday! I'm a Capricorn too, and this feels very Capricorn to plan ahead like you're doing.

I wouldn't worry about the B:G ratio, as long as you have some fun and friendly people in the mix you guys will have a great time. Be sure to have little snack/food or drink stations for people to mingle and mix.

Have you considered playing games? My friends and I are obsessed with this game One Night Ultimate Werewolf: https://www.amazon.com/Bezier-Games-ONUWBEZ-Ultimate-Werewolf/dp/B00HS7GG5G. It's kind of like mafia where you have to find and kill the werewolf in the mix - essentially it's a game where you lie to your friends.

Also if you have an xbox or Apple TV, the Jackbox Game set: http://jackboxgames.com/ is awesome. There's a mix of different games where people use their phones/ipad/whatever to submit answers so nobody has to be the point person to organize the game. I've started crying from laughing so hard at this game because people's personalities can really show through.

The goal of a party is for people to have fun / get to know each other so encourage (but don't force) fun interactions.

Well, the only things you really need to build a kit are a pair of hobby clippers and motivation. Everything else is optional, depending on how much effort you wanna put into making your model look as best as possible(hell, I used nail clippers of all things with my first gunpla because I didn't want to invest in tools before actually building one for myself and knowing if this was a hobby I wanted to pursue or not).

For this one I actually got a modeling toolkit, some Gundam markers for panel lining and a small cutting mat through amazon(although you might be able to find them at local hobby stores as well). I can't really speak for other tools, but these ones worked pretty well for me. If you're worried about costs you can always start with just some basic tools and slowly build your toolbox up from there as you build more models. Hopefully you have as much fun with your first gunpla as I had with mine!

P.S. Remember I'm also a newbie so take all of this with a grain of salt

Gundam Marker Value Set -GM01&02&03- (Black, Gray, Brown) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00HY93GHY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_y0ZqxbBYCHNCM

Three pack of the two pens you have to $9 with Amazon Prime vs the ~$11 for just the grey and black. Saves a buck or two with an extra pen.

Using these for my first build, easy for panel lining. Just have some Q-tips ready for removing excess ink that you don't want, and some IPA for redos.

I bought the same mat and I have no issues with it!

EDIT: I also have the same cutters, works great for me. For the Xacto knife, just want to point out that that one does NOT come with a cap (I made the same issue). There is a version with a cap, then you can just add an extra blade set. Make sure you get the right blade size. That there is a #1.

EDIT2: I got the same sandpaper too lol. I wish I had gotten files since I didn't have something hard to attach the sandpaper too. But that's my preference. Well I don't mean I would want files specifically, but holding a flimsy piece of sand paper to sand hasn't been fun. I need to get some sort of small block to tape it too or something.

u/iDingo91 · 1 pointr/Gunpla

I believe I have finally decided on my first Gunpla, the HG Age II Magnum and want to make sure the items I have added to my Amazon cart are ideal or not for a beginner/future use for HG and MG kits. The list is as follows:

  • Gundam Model Builder's Cutting Mat 12"x9"
  • Findfly 9Pcs Gundam Model Tool Kit
  • Gundam Marker Value Set
  • Mr. Super Clear Flat Spray
  • Bamboo Skewers
  • Alligator Clips
  • ScotchBlue Painter's Tape
  • Styrofoam Blocks

I know that this sub has a list of tools and tutorials, but because I'm trying to budget, I was thinking no more than $100 would be ideal for me to start with. Since I'm beginning with HG models, I don't think I need a full set of Gundam markers, but if it's needed/required/highly suggested, I might pick them up as well.

So I have read and seen that top coating and panel lining are essential for MG models to make them pop. Are they just as essential for HG model kits? Looking at pictures of the Age II Magnum I'm planning on getting from Amazon, it doesn't seem to have a lot of indents for panel lining. Of course, I could be wrong and be blind as a bat. If I don't do any sort of panel lining, is it still a good idea to add a top coat regardless?

Also, how soon can one get into MG kits? I was originally going to jump straight into either the MG GM Sniper II or the RX-78-2 Ver 3.0 but after doing some research over the past few days, I've decided I'll be doing a few HG's to begin with as I haven't built model kits since I was like 7 or 8 with my dad. I'm thinking after the Age II Magnum, I was thinking about getting either the HG Double O Diver or the HG 00 Shia Qan[T]. Maybe after I complete the 3 HG's I've listed, is it possible to jump to the the GM Sniper II?

    TL;DR:

  • Are the items I have listed a good starting point?

  • Is a full set of Gundam Markers a necessity for HG/beginners?

  • Are panel lining and top coatings important for HG model kits?

  • Is it okay to use top coat on an HG model if no panel lining is used?

  • Edit Do people usually top coat the accessories? I can't seem to find any info on that.

  • What color panel lining pens do people normally use based on different parts of Gunpla's?

  • What level of skill should one be at before getting into MG model kits?

u/format120 · 1 pointr/Gunpla

Hey guys! Just found this sub, but I've been wanting to get into this hobby for a while. Planning on going with this one to get my feet wet.

Before I buy it, I'm also planning on getting these markers and these wash's (both from the wiki). Can someone show me to a video tutorial that explains exactly how to use them please? I've got no idea what the wash's are for...

I might also pick up this scriber to try and do some battle damage, but I can't find any tutorials on that? I'd also need some paint...

Is there anything else that I'm missing? I've already got decent angle cutters and an Xacto knife.

Thanks!

I agree that in terms of "cost per hour" gunpla isn't that bad at all. As for why I've dropped so much, I've got a friend who is deployed to Korea right now. He's only going to be out there 6 more months, so I asked him to send me a bunch of stuff- 11 kits totaling $270. So yeah, that hurt the wallet, but it means I'll be able to focus on buying supplies like paint and tools for a while!

I just got my panel markers actually. Ordered off Amazon and didn't notice that they were an item that was shipped from Japan. The set only cost $6 for gray, black and brown, but it took 6weeks.

Newtypehq has them at $3 each, but if you are in the states shipping is quick.

For beginners the HG RX 78-2 Revive is a great kit for starting. Few stickers, and nice part color separation. It's 1/144 scale, so just take your time to avoid breaking any parts.

$10 USD - amzn.com/B00WW4F8YA

You can also get some panel lining Gundam Markers to help highlight vents, details, parts of interests, etc. The RX 78-2 is a good kit to also practice panel lining.

$9 USD - amzn.com/B00HY93GHY

As for tools, something like this should get you by for now since you're just starting the hobby. Has everything you need to get building.

$17 USD - amzn.com/B01GHA6C7G

u/uglyboyrufus · 1 pointr/Gunpla

If you plan on doing a lot of kits in the future, I'd just invest in some Gundam Markers. They're $10 for a set of black, gray and brown. Or if you just want black and gray, they're only $7.50.

Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes.

Well, how serious are you? Cause if you're serious... here ya go

Otherwise, without knowing what you're into, it's a bit tough. Sushi Go! is an absolutely awesome card game - super easy to teach, pretty quick to play, but really fun for anyone. It's... "THE BOMB" at parties.

I would also extremely recommend Dominion, it's probably my favorite table-top game. However, I can't say it's for everyone.

I would absolutely love KTANE... wish I could buy it, but I've already spent way too much on games, and college is eating into my pockets. Thanks much! Sir Soaring Spud

Sushi Go and some other stuff on my games list should be around that with shipping.

Thanks for the contest.

u/nexustab · 1 pointr/boardgames

Occasionally they have actual deals. Also for smaller orders it can make senses when you factor in shipping costs and delivery times.

For example you could get Risk Legacy or Galaxy Trucker right now for less than most other retailers or Sushi Go for a couple bucks more than Greatboardgames but free two day shipping w/ Prime.

u/costofanarchy · 1 pointr/lrcast

Sushi Go - Amazon US - $12

Sushi Go Party - Amazon - $20

As I mentioned above, I far prefer the party version and think it's worth the $8 extra; it's more than twice the "content" whereas the original is always the same. I'd only recommend the original over "Party" if a super portable game (about the size of two standard decks of cards) is useful to you.

u/Adamfirefist · 1 pointr/boardgames

Sushi Go! or Win, Lose, Banana.

(I've made my own WLB sets using 3 business cards, so it wins for "cheapest game ever".)

Also: vote #2 for Love Letter. I have the Kanai Factory edition, and I love it. (It's more expensive than the current default edition, but I think the art is nicer than the "cleavage edition".)

u/kanefeeman · 1 pointr/Boardgamedeals

Quirkle has roots in Scrabble and Sequence. Is both easy and engaging for all ages, and has a surprising amount of depth and strategy.

Sushi Go is a card game where you collect points, but you pass your hand to the next player. Fun for all ages.

If you want some bulk sets with some cool dice bags then check these out. Comes with more colors than you mentioned, but you might get a kick out of them. I always give duplicate dice sets away as gifts to my players, and they seem to appreciate them because who doesn't enjoy getting dice as presents?

Halflings Haversack which is 140 mini dice

Bag of Holding which again 140 dice which includes some solid opaque and translucent dice

Bag of Devouring 140 dice with some more cool styles including some blue and black colored dice.

And the Bag of Tricks. Another 140 dice

Just a heads up in case you are clueless like I was: babies don’t really play with toys until they are like 10 months old. Or older. Sure, maybe they will like to chew on something or look at a mobile before then but that is pretty much all you need. The world around them is so stimulating, they don’t need extra “stuff”. Also half the toys I bought my now toddler she has 0 interest in, even tho I read reviews and bought things popular with other people’s kids. :p I would wait til your kiddo is older and you can get a sense of what they might enjoy.

If you must get something buy these stacking cups and some sort of teething toy. And maybe a baby gym altho my kid was never really into that either.

Listener and Humanis's links are excellent.
If you're serious about trying it out, you can pick up the Beginner's Box; I have it, and it's a fantastic introduction to Pathfinder. It comes with a Player's Handbook and DM's Guide of sorts. Not the "full" Pathfinder game, but excellent at getting the basics down.
Once you get your feet wet (whether it be just with the free options, or after the Beginner's Box) you can pick up the Core Rulebook and Bestiary and be good to go!
I'd suggest picking up some of the Pathfinder Modules to start on- they do an excellent job of setting the tone and style for how Pathfinder is to be played. I suggest Master of the Fallen Fortress because it's free and a great place to start. Not much RP or real story, but it's a simple short intro to combat and environmental hazards.

u/chaotoroboto · 1 pointr/rpg

You will be choosing between Pathfinder and 4E, and as best I can tell the biggest difference between Pathfinder and 4E is personal preference. And as DM, you get to choose, frankly. Players will generally go along with what you think.

Both games sponsor in-store events where you can learn the basic feel of the game, especially combat, and it might be useful to go to those. Call up your game shop.

Pathfinder is my preference for not-combat. The combat's okay, but the character building and skill checking and all of that is awesome.

4th Edition D&D is my preference for combat. It can bog down, but the tactics and all offered by this are brilliant. If your guys are Warhammer players, this might be the better option. It might also feel too light for them, like it's trying too hard to be a miniatures wargame.

As a more expensive third option, there's this: Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay. It's a comprehensive fantasy setting that lines up with the Warhammer Fantasy wargame. I've played a super-old version, never played one of the new ones, and never played the actual wargame. It's not really a recommendation because I honestly know nothing about it; but if you want to have a game where the story could lead to an actual military battle or wars, this might make a cool option.

u/booklover13 · 1 pointr/Pathfinder_RPG

Look up the Beginner's Box.

Also, I basically helped someone do the same thing over the past two weeks. The way we approached it was to start with a basic module with the society pre-gened characters. Go over the basics of the character sheets. For the record we used Master of the Fallen Fortress(see /u/JesterRaiin). The next week was character creations. Because we had some experienced people we were able to group them and let every one make what they wanted.

What we will be doing a club-event in a few weeks is having some seminars. This is both for DMing and Players. I will be in charge of in-depth character creation, and I suggest you do something similar. Have everyone make a Marital, Caster, and Their Choice, in that order. For each character also have them level it onto a new sheet. We will be doing this for 2nd and 3rd level.

Good Luck!

u/NimrodOfNumph · 1 pointr/Pathfinder_RPG

Unfortunately tabletop RPG's are more of a group activity. You can play with two people (I have). In which case a basic set of polyhedral dice is all you'd really "need" to buy. You can largely find the complete ruleset for the Pathfinder RPG at the d20 Pathfinder SRD made by John Reyst (I love you man).

Having a physical copy of at least the Core Rulebook is also very helpful and handy. It would also probably be a little less daunting to read through then the entire contents of the SRD. PDF versions of all the rulebooks can be bought directly from Paizo's website if that's the way you want to go with it.

There is also the Pathfinder Beginner Box that has much of the basic content, a little adventure and some premade characters for you to experiment with.

Hope some of this information helps!

The first two links you posted are for 4th edition D&D.

The third link is specific to 3rd edition/3.5. Do not use the that third page if you are playing 4e. The rules are incompatible.

If you want to play 4e, see my 4e beginners'/buyers' guide.

If you want to play 3.5, most of the rules as well as many monsters are available on the d20srd. Alternatively, you could play Pathfinder, which is a third party variant of 3rd edition/3.5 D&D, which has basically all of its official rules and content available online on the Pathfinder SRD. While 3.5/Pathfinder is far from my RPG system of choice, if PF is the way you want to go, I can't deny that the Pathfinder Beginner Box is a very good value.

Ah yeah I do. My problem, though, is I do not know the curvature of my solid in certain places. This means I am unable to 'draw' a line, or object, along the surface of the solid.

Unfortunately, I can't send screenshots at the moment but I will as soon as I can. For the moment imagine if one of these was plopped into your cad workspace and you were given no dimensions for it's curvature. How would you go about drawing a line the perfectly follows the curvature along the object's surface? How would you draw a spiral on it? Or an X? Or a map of Western Greenland?

I don't mean to say I need an answer to each of those questions, but hopefully it gives you a better idea of what I'm asking. I could easily sweep a spiral on to the object I linked but a map would be much more difficult to define.

If I'm still not making sense, I'll post screenshots of my specific problem as soon as I'm able.

My 18 month olds have started to love that book, so I don't think the age range is necessarily wrong. You're giving a gift for the whole year of 1-2. Plus I just love the concept and how fun it is for parents too.

But the toy my twins are most obsessed with is honestly the simple stuff like this stacking cup set. Our nanny who has worked in infant centers for years got them a set (and some stacking boxes) and it is by far what they play with more than any fancier toys. Sometimes boring stuff is good too ;)
