My sentiments exactly. Apparently you can get them on Amazon.

Oh they exist.

If they purchased the proper gasket tape its fine. Its called fireblack or lavalock depending on the company you purchase it from. It's used to seal smokers and grills. With Charcoal or stick burner grill/smokers you don't want any additional air getting in from cracks that could fluctuate your temperature. If you are trying to smoke a brisket you want to keep the temp even, steady, and low and the additional air will cause your fuel to burn hotter and produce black acrid smoke that will make it taste poorly. If the gasket tape isn't directly in the flame it shouldn't burn. The ambient heat shouldn't cause it to off gas chemicals.

I've always thought it was pretty junky... I've wanted to get lights to put on the tops of the shelves, so they're directly above the plants and maybe find a new shelf. But these have worked out since November of last year! I started using really cheap LED lights from Walmart, highest wattage equivalency with the highest color spectrum(usually 5000k).

I now use these:

A robot lawn mower that can be programmed to cut the grass.

u/CNhuman · 13 pointsr/femalefashionadvice

You could make hot chocolate kits.

Get some dollar tree mugs to personalize , gourmet hot chocolate packets , awesome magic color fire shit , and throw some packets of marshmallows and peppermint sticks in there. Add cute holiday wool socks if you love them, and you have a fantastic gift basket for $33 ($3.3/person), or $77 ($7.7/person) with socks.

> I am choosing to leave out side lights from my first build to reduce the amount of variables that may give me electrical/heat issues. Will this significantly affect my yield to the point where I should be seriously reconsidering this decision?

Not really. The sidelights are a nice and cheap upgrade, but probably affects more trichome production than yield.

> Which of those two fans do you think will work better for me? If these are both horrible, what other fans should I be looking at? I am looking at doing a DIY carbon filter since it seems to be pretty straightforward. What sort of DIY carbon filters do you suggest? How powerful should fans be to deal with a carbon filter in a standard-size space bucket?

Its really hard to recommend those small fans for filters, my advice would be to get an inline fan and filter and not overcomplicate things. ONA gel is also a good solution for odors.

> I am using white buckets rather than mylar because it seems white buckets work fine and mylar can create hot spots. Is this accurate?

White buckets are a fine choice, but mylar does not create hot spots. That is a myth. Check /r/HandsOnComplexity for the science behind that.

> I've read that buckets are much cheaper at stores than they are on Amazon. Around how much should I be spending for 4x white 5 gallon buckets? Are there any other items in my build that I can get for cheaper in person?

Try to get them for free. I've never paid for a 5gal bucket. At least in my city there are a lot of 5gal buckets near construction sites, to give one example. You just have to know where to look.

> I am planning on ordering seeds from Nirvana. Is this a good vendor or is there a different one that I should be using?

Should be OK, most big vendors are fine.

> I've found plenty of resources about space buckets on this subreddit and the website, but not much on the actual process of growing Marijuana inside of a space bucket. Apart from the setup, is there any difference in the process of growing Marijuana inside of a space bucket and growing it another way? Is there any sort of guide or subreddit dedicated to what's needed to go from seed to harvest you can point me towards?

Check the bucket plant guide for tips from the community. The best kind of experience will be your first hand experience. You should expect to kill some plants before mastering the proccess. In a Space Bucket, the main challenge is keeping the plant as short as possible. If you keep it low the lighting will be more effective, and the flowers more awesome.

What you're smelling is the terpenes, the volatile aromatic compounds present in cannabis. They provide the taste, aroma, and synergistic effects present in cannabis. You could, if you were so inclined, put your flower in a vacuum chamber and pull all those terps off. It would smell like grass, taste like ass, and not be as pleasant effect-wise, but it would get rid of the smell. Try a dry-herb vape. There's still smell, but it's a lot less. Or, put one of these in your smoking area: https://www.amazon.com/VIVOSUN-Air-Filtration-Kit-Controller/dp/B06XFRNPR8/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_86_img_1/143-0726135-2560430?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=PP2EZ1QZN61VNVCEGBSN

So by fermenting the sauce, you encourage lactic acid bacteria like Lactobacillus to give the sauce a distinctive sour taste. It's the same process that takes place with sauerkraut and kimchi. The bacteria that do the work are halophilic, which means they are salt tolerant. Lots of molds and bad bacteria can't tolerate salt. So by salting the raw sauce, you encourage the good microorganisms, and discourage the bad ones.

If you look at the nutrition labels of fermented chile sauces, most won't include vinegar. (They might add citric acid as a preservative.) So the lowdown is you don't need to add vinegar. Just like sourdough, it's going to get sour on its own. Actually, starting with vinegar will slightly inhibit the fermentation process.

This fermentation process is used in countless forms around the world to preserve vegetable products. So, provided the mixture is salted, it won't go bad if you keep fermenting it for longer than a week. People store fermented sauce in jars in a cool place all winter long, and it just keeps getting sourer and sourer. You can ferment your sauces until they achieve a piquancy you find acceptable, then boil and bottle. You should get some pH test strips at a pharmacy or department store; you need to have a pH of 4.6 or lower to prevent risk of botulism.

As far as exotic sauces, well, you can do a Caribbean style sauce with carrots onions, garlic and habaneros/scotch bonnets. Or you might make a sriracha style sauce, but add smoked onions and/or garlic. I recommend a stovetop smoker.

I’ve only ever grown with artificial lights (unique living situation) so here’s some I can personally vouch for and recommend.

Sansi bulbs. I have the 24W model (fits in any standard desk lamp) and the 15W lights. These have special lenses that focus the beam very strongly in one spot, like a spotlight so it can be raised pretty high and cover a large-ish area. Don’t underestimate these, I put a plant too close to center and it turned jet black in 2 days. He bounced back just fine but these are definitely strong.

Strip lights. I’ve since upgraded my Sansi’s to these with a dedicated shelf. These aren’t as strong, I talked to a user on r/Succulents that reported haw etiolation 9 inches away from the light. However, once she lowered it to 5 inches they said they get amazing stress coloration. To put it in perspective, they said they had a Black Prince that’s always been green but has since gone black like the plant’s supposed to be.
As a bonus, here are the shelves I use, they are exactly the same dimensions as the lights.

Both are very capable depending on your needs.

Edit 11/26/19: Sooo, the strip lights have shot up to $200 for some reason. When I linked them, they were only $49. It’s either a stock issue or the new price, not sure.

Pretty much stopped growing vertical (an inch or 2 since last update) but filling out nicely.

Some yellow showing on tips, but not too concerned at this point as she looks to be doing fine. I noticed roots at the top of the soil and had about an inch of room for more substrate, so topped it up.

She is drinking a lot now, almost daily feedings of about 3 liters.

Screen to keep curious pets out: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B01MR2SZOJ/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I used the self adhesive that came with the screen, but I'd definitely recommend sewing the border and velcro on if you have the means and the talent. Pulling the screen on and off weakens the adhesive for sure. The lights don't make much heat. They are also on a timer that I inherited so I don't have a link for that. But my plants really like it! I have an echeveria lola that has stress colors and lithops on the top shelf propped to be closer that I think are doing fine. They are starting to split on their own which I'm super excited about. My PVN also gets a very dark purple when it was on the middle shelf during the last couple hurricanes that hit the east coast.

My railing planter was just moved to the bottom shelf for the cold evenings but seeing as I have echeveria and cacti that are doing well under these lights already I'm not too worried.

This bulb has done wonders for my light needy plants (I don't work for them, just a fan of their product)

I was the same way. I had no idea which to get, so I bought the blue/red light bars and they didn’t do anything for my plants. I ended up going with a full spectrum LED. My plants are thriving now.

Congrats on finding the seeds and getting this far. If you are a first time grower, then I would highly recommend a controlled environment starting with a tent. I have done it both ways, and outdoor seasonally, and you will benefit a lot from having a confined space you can control as you learn. Contrary to popular belief, it isnt "just a weed that grows". To have a quality finished product you need a good amount of time and energy spent on the plants. However, because the growth takes time, as a first time grower, you can purchase the items you need as you need them to build out your grow. I have purchased a lot of my items on amazon, so I will provide some links to items I vouch for personally.

I would start with a light and good soil. This is one of the most important items by far. For indoor, use LED, or a combo of T5 for veg and then LED for flower.t5: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01M624OCR/ref=crt_ewc_title_oth_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A1KBVFFLR1WEMK

LED: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0185OLBPK/ref=sspa_dk_detail_10?psc=1&pd_rd_i=B0185OLBPK

I have both of these products and can finish 4 plants in a tent nicely in about 100 days. I know people have feelings about using off brand lights but I have had zero issues, ever. On thing to do though is to not let the plants grow too tall. Rather train them to grow like bushes by topping them early and continuing to top the new nodes at a reasonable height, Id suggest 30 inches max (from top of the pot).

Also buy this : https://www.amazon.com/General-Hydroponics-pH-Control-Kit/dp/B000BNKWZY/ref=pd_sim_86_7?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B000BNKWZY&pd_rd_r=5185d750-c735-11e8-83ba-35492fd40af5&pd_rd_w=FfWzV&pd_rd_wg=5opTv&pf_rd_i=desktop-dp-sims&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_p=18bb0b78-4200-49b9-ac91-f141d61a1780&pf_rd_r=5TDAFKEPVRHZC2TKYA3F&pf_rd_s=desktop-dp-sims&pf_rd_t=40701&psc=1&refRID=5TDAFKEPVRHZC2TKYA3F

AND LEARN ABOUT pH!!!! Many young growers don't do this and it makes a HUGE difference.

For veg, you will be able to get by a few weeks or maybe a month without a tent, but the light will become annoying.

For soil. I highly recommend mixing fox farms happy frog and ocean forest. This will prevent you needing to use fertilizers really at all until flower time. Yes it is kind of expensive, but it is worth it. I have tried the experiment of making soil myself... it becomes outrageously priced so fast and unless you are really good at chemistry/botany you can totally fuck some shit up. Trust the fox farms soil. It is the best IMO. Also, I am a huge fan of cloth bags. I suggest these:

https://www.amazon.com/VIVOSUN-5-Pack-Thickened-Nonwoven-Handles/dp/B00TF9E6XE/ref=pd_sim_60_7?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B00TF9E6XE&pd_rd_r=fb2641f0-c736-11e8-8198-7d964bea5356&pd_rd_w=GtDju&pd_rd_wg=aCJer&pf_rd_i=desktop-dp-sims&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_p=18bb0b78-4200-49b9-ac91-f141d61a1780&pf_rd_r=H05JF866M3Z3Y0MEV2JX&pf_rd_s=desktop-dp-sims&pf_rd_t=40701&psc=1&refRID=H05JF866M3Z3Y0MEV2JX

So a tent should be your next purchase.

I have two of these and they do a great job.Tent: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06XJQ8LPY/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Shortly after getting the tent set up you need to get an oscillating fan and some regulators to tell you temp, humidity, etc.

regulator: https://www.amazon.com/AcuRite-Humidity-Thermometer-Hygrometer-Indicator/dp/B0013BKDO8/ref=pd_sim_86_6?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B0013BKDO8&pd_rd_r=5185d750-c735-11e8-83ba-35492fd40af5&pd_rd_w=FfWzV&pd_rd_wg=5opTv&pf_rd_i=desktop-dp-sims&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_p=18bb0b78-4200-49b9-ac91-f141d61a1780&pf_rd_r=5TDAFKEPVRHZC2TKYA3F&pf_rd_s=desktop-dp-sims&pf_rd_t=40701&psc=1&refRID=5TDAFKEPVRHZC2TKYA3F

Now even in veg, your plants are going to begin to smell. But by flower time you will have a real problem on your hands, even with a tent. So next you will need a carbon scrubber. I use this one off amazon for a tent and have zero complaints while the tent is closed. I also have the filter hanging in the tent and venting out the side into the attic of my rental. Zero smell, unless the tent is open (which you will want to do in the beginning, but over time you will learn to not go in everyday unless you need to). With this item, every other grow you need to replace just the carbon canister part of it. It is easy to do and worth every penny.

Carbon scrubber:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06XFRNPR8/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Buying all this over time is pretty easy, even on a conservative budget.

Hope this helps!

Costco:

  • 25-pack (container + lid set)
  • $9.99 (so about 40 cents per container)
  • 38 ounces
  • Item # 578568
  • Dishwasher/Microwave/Freezer-safe
  • BPA-free

They're in the section by the foil wrap & plastic forks & whatnot. I usually buy bulk packs off Web Restaurant, but sometimes I'll snag an extra set if I see them in-person, as they don't last forever. These are actually pretty decently sturdy & have good snap lids on top, so I think they'll hold up to several dishwashing cycles without cracking!

My meal-prep approach is what I call "small-batch gourmet", aka I make like maybe 3 to 10 containers full of food, which tastes really good (instead of bland & boring), and then freeze them. I have a deep freezer & this method allows me to only have to cook one meal a night, then build up a large inventory that I can rotate through without getting sick of eating the same thing. And because it's "gourmet" (aka not lame food), I actually look forward to eating it, instead of getting the urge to get take-out. Tastes good, saves massive amounts of money, and fits my macros!

My primary meal-prep tools are the Instant Pot, Sous Vide, and Oster pellet smoker (awesome compact budget smoker for $60, with these pellets, which is oddly comparable to my Traeger). I make like 90% of my food in these three gadgets. I also do a lot of no-knead bread projects (English muffins, bagels, baguettes, dinner rolls, boulles, etc.) because of the convenience, and use a cheap vacuum sealer off Amazon for storing stuff long-term (ex. meat lasts 2 to 3 years when vac-sealed & stored in a freezer).
u/Cuicos · 6 pointsr/microgrowery

Yes but that's a higher end and overpriced light, with that money you're better off using a COB fixture, you can save a lot of money buying a roleadro 2nd gen and get good results, either their 300 or 600 depending on the area you're looking to cover. Here, and here if you want more quality.

u/chasing-the-sun · 5 pointsr/AskCulinary

What's your home ventilation like? Depending on that you have a couple of options:

  • Wok smoking - use a foil-lined wok with a wire rack and tight-fitting lid.

  • A stovetop smoker - same principle as the above, but a dedicated pan you can buy for the purpose. Looks to have a larger area for smoking than a wok would provide.

  • Dhungar technique - you light a lump of charcoal and leave it in your covered pan for like 30 seconds.

If your kitchen is poorly ventilated, then I'd recommend using a smoky ingredient (liquid smoke, smoked paprika, smoked cheese, etc.) instead.
u/babyfacedjanitor · 5 pointsr/microgrowery

Doesn't make much sense tbh. You can buy a roleadro UFO for the same cost as these materials and get twice the wattage without having to buy a bunch of materials and construct a gizmo.

The lawn’s am interesting one for me. Someone put a flyer on my door the other day saying they’d cut both lawns for $35. Okay, let’s use that as a base. Let’s say I expect to cut my lawn every two weeks all season long, a season lasts 9 months (because Texas), and I seek a <2 year ROI. Over 2 years I would pay them 35*52*.75*2/2=$1365. I can buy a robotic lawn mower for $1000... so why not do that?

I ultimately didn’t, deciding that mowing the lawn myself was worth the precious little exercise it offered me, but I’ll probably regret that once summer hits....

Elite garden nute line. Fox Farms Coco Loco in 5 gal fabric pots. Hand water and suck up runoff.

Mykos (added in grow medium and applied on top layer before watering every other time), Azos (added to grow medium and in feeding every other time), Mammoth P, Recharge (every other watering and will stop week 5 or 6), Bio Ag Liquid humic acid, dynagro protekt silica, dynagro mag pro, CalMag (0 ppm starting water)

They are needing water every 2 days now. RH is at ~50%

I added a box fan in the corner of my tent and it’s crazy good. I recommend. I have a 20” and on low setting it’s a gentle breeze AND it cools my light heat sinks. I have a 12” blizzard oscillating fan at pot level. Roots like oxygen.

Have been defoliating a lot. I’ll curve out on that as soon as I stop seeing them crowd. I really don’t want bud rot and want to promote good air flow to every top/bud.

And I like these

https://www.amazon.com/Gro-Pro-Level-Pot-Elevator/dp/B01J37FHF8

I did not pay that amount for mine, but if you can find them, it allows so much air to get under your fabric pots and great drainage. Same as bottom of a milk carton, but this is a good 2.5 inches off the flood tray

Anyone know how much UV-B I should add for more resin production? I read that having a UV-B light on for 4 hours in the middle of the 12 hour light is good but I don’t want to bleach my plants. Thanks!

I see a lot of the ventilation mods for the Photon using the printed backplate for a 4" dryer hose.My wife cannot stand the smell of the resins, and is also very concerned about the long term health effects. So I'm building an enclosure as cheaply as I can.

I've sealed up an Ikea Lixhult ($40) and cut out a 4" hole to attach a hose. I'm probably going to buy the Vivosun Air Filtration Kit as the extractor.

Here's the progress so far.

The cheapest solution I can think of is to use a full spectrum SANSI grow light bulb and put it in a floor up lamp

example of floor lamp with glass shade

Just remember you want a lamp with a glass shade and not plastic as these LED's aren't really meant for this type of application so you don't want any heat/plastic issues. This means spending a little more on a lamp because plastic shade uplights are usually cheaper.

I use these Sansi bulbs for my plants in the wintertime. They are bright and the full spectrum light gives off a nice sunlight kind of feel to them which helps during the dreary winter months.

Grab one of the lamps and see if you like the light. You can always send it back.

u/Iggy0075 · 4 pointsr/microgrowery

My Setup:

u/ClosetCaseGrowSpace · 4 pointsr/microgrowery

I've used both fabric and plastic. In my experience, everything grows much easier in fabric. The pots you linked look fine. You can wash them in the washing machine and re-use them if your wife will let you, lol. I like these pot risers with these saucers. You can remove the run-off with a bucket head.

u/hatts · 4 pointsr/IndoorGarden

You have a lot of VERY tolerant plants. All of the snake plants, the rubber plant, prayer plant, and ZZ are fine where they are. Like the other commenter said, put the fig right at the window.

Don't get a lamp until some of the plants start proving that they need it. If you do need one, go with this bulb in a basic clamp light setup. This can be kind of an eyesore though.

u/endless_mic · 4 pointsr/Adenium

If you could post a picture of the whole plant and describe the potting medium, estimated hours of direct and indirect sunlight, and your watering schedule, it would be really helpful for making constructive recommendations for this guy.

The usual base line requirements for these guys are lots of light, temperatures above 50 degrees Fahrenheit, and well draining potting soil. All three of these factors are indicative of these plants being native to Sub-Saharan Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. Enough sun means as much as you can give them, appropriate temperature means not letting the plant stay below 50 degrees for an extended period, and well-draining soil means adding amendments like perlite, pumice, or other small stone like bits. All of these factors combine to allow the plant to get enough but never too much water. Following these general guidelines will keep them from waffling in and out of dormancy (or worse, dying from either frost or root rot), and once you get a feel for what your plant needs, you'll both have a good time. Everybody has their own interpretation of these guidelines, and after a while, you'll be able to gauge the individual needs of your adenium by sight, touch, and other intuitive means.

Personally, I keep my adeniums in full sun for several hours a day from March until the end of October. I can get a way with this because I live in Florida. But, since we do get a handful of light frosts during the winter, I keep them in a makeshift greenhouse with growlights until the weather seems to have completely turned. My potting mix is a combination of humus, coco coir, pumices, and a variety of other bits of mineral substrate. Because my mix is mostly mineral, I fertilize using a product called dyna grow, using about half the regular dose every time I water, which is about once every 10 days. This works for me because of the climate here gets really hot in the summer, and despite being humid, the soil drys out pretty quickly. Like I said above, you'll get a feel for what works best in your environment, and for me, I usually let my plants decide when they need water by gently squeezing the caudex. If it is firm, I hold off on giving them water, and once it has a little give to it, I completely drench the pot.

To embark on your goal of making your adenium "bushier", you'll need to aggressively prune these two long branches down to the desired height. There are several helpful online guides for doing this without too much stress. Pruning will promote the growth of multiple new branches, and will cause caudex enlargement to speed up moderately. Owing to the fact that you're in zone 4b, I'd wait until late spring to do the pruning. After pruning, ease up on watering for about a week or two, and put it outside on days when the temp gets into the 60's. Be careful not to put the plant in direct sunlight for too long until it has adjusted to direct sunlight. To ease into this, start by leaving it somewhere with bright, indirect sunlight, and slowly move it into full sun for longer and longer periods each day. Since it probably won't get warm enough to set this guy outside full time until around June in your area, I'd suggest bringing it inside at night until summer really kicks off and the threat of chilly nights subsides. Alternatively, and what I personally would do in your climate, is buy a decent, but relatively inexpensive, grow light. I have have a lot of success with this light .

Be warned, adeniums are extremely dramatic plants, and often drop all their leaves for what may seem, to you, to be only slight disturbances. Such events include, temperature change, repotting, and sometimes for no reason at all. Don't panic, these are extremely resilient plants that, in a few years (maybe even less) will reward you with some of the most beautiful blossoms you've ever seen.

You're getting started on a really exciting relationship with this little guy, and I wish you the best of luck. If this leads you to the addiction most of us here suffer from, you'll soon want more plants. I have a ton of seedlings going right now, and if you decide you want to raise one, I'd gladly send one your way.

As a fan of and dabbler in classic charcuterie, you can definitely make your own bacon, though I'm not sure of taking store bought bacon and curing it yourself. the main things you need are approximately,1/2 tsp prague powder #1(or pink curing salt), 1/8th cup kosher salt, 1 tsp black pepper, and 1/8th cup brown sugar for each pound of pork belly. Once you've made it a few times you can adjust seasonings, add different things like paprika, red pepper flakes or any number of other seasoning. the prague powder is what gives it the pink-ish color and the salt and sugar help cure it. you can also use different kinds of sugars when you are comfortable.

take the thick rind off of the pork belly and rub the curing mix all over it, put it in a ziplock bag in the fridge for 5-7 days, flipping every day. liquid will release and essentially turn it into a brine. this is good. after curing, take it out of the bag and rinse off all the extra salt and pat it dry, then put it back in the fridge uncovered on a baking rack for 6-12 hours. then smoke it at about 175 for about 3 hours or until internal temp of 150 in whatever smoking device you have access to. Before I got my bbq pit with a smokebox I started off with something similar to this. After smoking let it cool to room temp, then wrap it in plastic wrap and then cool it overnight. slice, fry, and enjoy.

What I normally do when I make it is after the final cooling stage I'll slice it all up and put on parchment paper and freeze it. Depending on what all they've done to your uncured bacon you might be able to do cure it like this but I've never done that so I don't know what would happen.

I've been a huge fan since I got mine at a local Ace Hardware. No mechanical or electrical issues, good smoked product (I don't use Traeger pellets much, I use these). Only weird issue I had was with the side handle...it broke off, cleanly, when I was pulling it back into the garage; the spot welding just gave way, I guess. I called, quickly got someone, they immediately sent me a replacement handle, and I was back in business two days later (the handle has no effect on smoking or other operations).

Admittedly, if someone is in this forum they're unlikely to dislike Traeger, but anectdotally I can't say anything bad about the smoker.

Growing up camping with my dad is definitely one of my better memories. We always took cards and played games, but my dad also used it as an opportunity to teach me invaluable skills.

  • Teach them how to tie some basic knots (if they don't already know them). Animated Knots is an awesome resource for this.

  • Take them Snipe Hunting

  • If you think they're ready for it, and they don't have one already, this is a great opportunity for them to get their first pocket knife. Granted I'm in my 30's now, but I got my first Swiss Army Knife on a camping trip with my dad and cherished it. He showed me how to use it safely and explained what each part was.

  • After you're done cooking, including s'mores and such, you can get these packets called Mystical Fire that change the color of your campfire. Just don't cook over it, but it's pretty fun to have on hand.

I live downtown too, but in the Commodore Perry, so I can't give advise on LaSalle.

However, groceries aren't too bad if you have a car. The Kroger in Oregon isn't too far, and neither if the one on Monroe by Best Buy (though it is small and cramped). I HIGHLY recommend getting a collapsible wagon though. We bought one the same week we moved in and it's been incredibly valuable for us, especially when we get heavy items like cat litter or pop.

The biggest advice I can give though is to explore. We moved in at the start of last summer and I spent almost all of my free time just walking around. Downtown isn't that large and I never had a problem with anyone being creepy. I played Pokemon Go a lot, but I also spent quite a bit of time by the water just drawing. There are a lot of interesting things in the buildings and architecture downtown that I feel a lot of people don't care about/notice.

Also! If you're not already aware, there is a pretty sweet art supply store downtown called the Art Supply Depo. It's over by Home Slice pizza. There is also Handmade Toledo in uptown and they offer some cool Toledo art and swag, but also a ton of art classes. I can't recommend both enough!

I have three different strains, Northern Lights, Pre-99 big bud, and pure power plant, and then an unknown seed(which I planted about two weeks ago as the previous unknown seed turned out male, see previous post [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/microgrowery/comments/5qo1yo/early_sign_of_balls_details_in_comments/0. One in each 3-gallon smart pot. For the first two weeks of growing I had an 18/6 light schedule, and then switched to 12/12. (I'm essentially doing 12/12 from as early as the plant could respond to the change in light schedule). Over the past 15 days I watered twice with tiger bloom nutes.

I definitely made the mistake of not listening to your advice when I originally posted and am trying to grow 3 plants in a 1.5X2.5X3 foot tent...It is getting crowded, I should've listened and stuck with one, maybe two plants. Other than that I haven't had any problem that I have noticed other then a few spots of damage on leaves occasionally but no pests or wilting. I'm sure there are things I could've done better though. Thank you for all your help, I can't wait to get to harvest.

I've taken this beast with me on multiple backpacking adventures. Powers my phone 24/7 for a week easily. Even offers 12v outputs up to 3A for special electronics that might need it.

No need to mess with solar chargers. In my experience, they are all useless. Too slow, too expensive, and too cumbersome. I eventually ditched these solar panel systems in favor of this option. When you are backpacking, you really don't want to dink around with solar; just plug and go devices.

u/Prima13 · 3 pointsr/telescopes

It sounds like managing to keep eight good AA batteries in the thing is the issue. If I might make a suggestion, get yourself one of these rechargeable batteries and use that instead. It has 11Ah of capacity and one of these will run my Celestron CPC 9.25 EdgeHD for almost an entire day. It will come with a cable that should fit your scope; it uses a standard 2.1mm plug. It also comes with the charger to top it off during the day when you're not using it.

I have this attached to the fork arm of my scope and the battery moves with the scope and the wire doesn't wrap around and get pinched this way. It's a very clean approach and will save you having to always worry about AA batteries or extension cords.

⛺️: 4x4 is versatile as both veg and flower.

💡: If you want to go new, reasonably priced and show results look at quantum boards (check out r/microgrowery for advice on which) (https://www.horticulturelightinggroup.ca). If not, 400w HID (either Kijiji or Amazon options) including Metal Halide for veg, HPS for flower, will work in that size tent, although you should shoot for 50w/square foot (true watts from the wall). Magnetic ballast is cheaper but more cumbersome, digital is more money but can be dimmed most of the time and switch back and forth from Veg/Flower easily.

Ventilation: 4” or 6” inline fan (for fresh air) ($40 Home Hardware, either one), and a 4” or 6”exhaust w/carbon filter on Amazon, depending on what size tent. Couple of clip on fans and an oscillating fan to circulate (might have to mess with the oscillating with space, or get a wall mount one $$)

Random rambling notes:

You can be as frugal or spend as much as you want with this hobby. I did the half and half approach with sourcing my lights on Kijiji ($50 for 400w hps and $25 for metal halide that I wired to remote ballast) with new tent, fans, medium, fertilizers, ph pen (don’t cheap out), and other accessories, and I could say the initial investment was just at about $1000.

I wish I went with a 4x4 to start for shape and heat dispersion (2x4 is fine for 400w in the winter, harder to control during summer and growing two plants into a rectangle can be a pruning job itself ), 2x4 is fine for 2 big girls comfortably, 3 is a crowd but possible. Or you could go SOG growing method and pack more in, but I like to make table top plants as much as possible. I know this grow is in Canada so go ahead and get 1 or 2 cheap humidifiers for vegging during winter (it’s coming :D), but you’ll have an easy time during flower to keep RH low for flower. Summertime you’ll have an easier time w an air conditioned apartment, it should keep the humidity in check as well. Also get a couple of thermometers for the tent, one maybe with an outside probe to keep outside the tent to check during lights out. Also, you’ll find aluminum tape handy to cover pinhole leaks from less expensive tents (Vivosun is affordable, they have great customer service that will compensate any flaws in their tent w pinhole light, or bite the bullet and get a Gorilla or Mammoth tent 💵 💰). Harvesting is another bag of shit to get, hit me up if you want that list.

Soil from local grow shops but can also buy from online. I went cheaper on light, but I wouldn't do that again. Get good quality lights.

Yeah I wasn't sure if one would be enough. I think they're only drawing 250 watts at the wall, so 500 total for the closet. Each panel is 120 5watt epiled LEDs which is how they can market it as "600w" but reality is the drivers are pretty weak. For the price point they seemed good enough at the time.

u/jeffmolby · 3 pointsr/HomeImprovement

I would probably set up some LED lights in a fairly permanent manner and then simply carry a battery pack out to power them whenever I'm entertaining. It'll probably power a bunch of LED lights and a radio all night long, but worst case, you buy two batteries to get through your longer parties.

It's not as fancy as an overkill solar set would be, but it's much, much simpler. You could have it all ready to go in time for tonight's party.

u/GingerMan512 · 3 pointsr/CPAP

I have a resmed 10 and will be camping this weekend. I will be using this battery. To get maximum performance you'll need the DC power supply.

A few reviews indicate you can get a good two nights sleep without recharging when running D.C., one night on AC. I'll report back with my findings next week.

Edit. You can connect a solar panel directly to this battery for 'unlimited' use.

u/Umbristopheles · 3 pointsr/SleepApnea

So that site says it's 5.2 amp hours in size. So 5200 mAh. I have one of these that I got on a lightning deal for $99.99 and an adapter for my cpap that allows me to go from DC to DC instead of DC to AC to DC again, making the battery last much much longer.

And it's only 3.3 pounds. Sure it's a little bigger and heavier, but might be great for saving money plus 7 to 8 times the juice. I know medical suppliers LOVE to jack up the price on everything.

u/MotleyMoxxi · 3 pointsr/electricdaisycarnival

Hands down the best camping, long-term portable charger I've owned. I purchased this charger for LIB 3 years ago & have taken it on every road trip and camping music festival since! Fully charge it before your trip. It keeps our phones at full charge for the whole event! (4-6 days). I'm sure this is contingent on how many people you share it with and how often you need a full charge (we did about 2 a day with 3 people).

I would have to say yeah, slightly, if you're not willing to do anything at all about it. How much effort you're willing to go through is up to you, but I'll throw out a few suggestions, from low effort to ludicrous:

-try from different places on your balcony, although it's difficult to predict wind against a building.
-smoke out of a different window
-smoke into your range hood or bathroom exhaust fan
-any of the above plus a fan to blow the smoke farther/better
-add a HEPA filter to the fan
-some kind of personal air filter like the smoke buddy
-hack together a tube with fan and activated charcoal (diy version of below)
-blow your smoke through something like this bad boy: https://www.amazon.com/VIVOSUN-Air-Filtration-Kit-Controller/dp/B06XFRNPR8
(maybe they'll even pay for it, I know I probably would cough up a hundred bucks to permanently abate a nuisance that bothered me multiple times a day)

u/nado121 · 3 pointsr/AnycubicPhoton

A proper setup should be able to get rid of any smells, but that wouldn't be a sandwich-sized sponge and your usual 120mm computer case fan. In order for this to work you will need a radial fan and a proper filter like this set. Something smaller would certainly do, but I've never seen anything under 4" diameter.

They key is getting something that provides enough suction toward the exhaust so all the other openings and cracks in the photon's case don't leak any gas. This will in turn increase the volume of your whole setup. Sleeping next to it might be difficult. There's solutions for that, too, if you're willing to spend the time and money.

I also deal with SAD and the lights in my apartment play a huge role how I manage it during the winter.

For plants, look for bulbs that are between 4000-6000K. Kelvin (K) measures color temperature (how warm or cool a light color is). Daylight is roughly between 4500K-6500K.

You'll also want to pay attention to the lumens (lm). Lumens measures how bright/intense a light is. Look for something between 2000lm-4000lm. Lumens is measured closest to the bulb and the intensity of the light reduces drastically the further a plant is from the light source. Higher light plants will prefer being directly under the bulb while lower light plants can be further way (like 2-3ft away :p).

I've been using these. I saw in the reviews that people are successfully using these lights with cacti and succulents. They've been working well for my plants (monstera, cat palm, pilea, scindapsus, sanseverias, etc.) and I love how bright my plant corner is.

u/Arctic172nd · 3 pointsr/IndoorGarden

I'm using this lamp cord with this grow light and these smart outlets for my monstera. Granted its a new addition so I dont have time to say if it works but I dont see why it wont. I have it around 2-3 feet above its upper most leaves and fashioned a shade out of black paper my wife had (its VERY bright). The outlets let me set a timer or turn it on and off remotely for whatever reason.

u/HonkMafa · 3 pointsr/Hydroponics

Here it is just prior to harvest, showing the 3 buttercrunch plants, the lamp, and the 3 romaine ports covered with foil. I may have re-positioned the lamp a bit because I was trying to move things around in there, but that is how close it was. There is another light off to the right over my carrot "crop."

Here it is in early April (first pic).

Buttercrunch on the right, Romaine on the left (I rotated the tote at some point). Color a bit washed out due to lamps. The little lettuce plant off to the right in dirt was sprouted the same day as the others and was watered with same nutes, just plainly not growing as fast as those in hydro. I still have it and it is still pretty sad.

Romaines were harvested twice before they started giving up. I removed them, covered up those 3 holes and let the buttercrunch have the whole thing for the last few weeks.

Here is the tote.

Hope that covers everything!

300 watt bulbs on echeveria's which are light hogs.

It'll require a little bit of custom work but you can definitely power it off of a battery.

A pre-packaged battery will give you the easiest installation / charging options. Make sure it offers 12v DC outputs like this one: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01M3S00H0/

Then you'll want to convert the 12v DC to 24v DC (the lightstrip plus runs on 24v) using a regulator like this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0085T97PW/

Aside from that, all you'll need are a couple of barrel plugs to connect the regulator between the battery and Hue controller. I'm not 100% sure of the barrel plug sizes, I expect the 12v side (battery output) to use a 5.5mm X 2.1mm barrel plug but I'm not sure which size the Hue controller requires as input.

u/mrhappypantz · 2 pointsr/SleepApnea

Car camping - get a deep cycle AGM battery (available in many sizes, depending on how long you want to go without charging) and a DC adapter for your machine. More info

Backpacking - you're going to have to get creative. There are a lot of commercial lithium cpap batteries out there that are much lighter than lead acid per watt, but you'll only get a night or two from one of them, and they're very expensive. Your best bet is a general purpose Lithium battery with a 12V output combined with a 12V cpap (or 12v DC adapter if your machine is 24V). Here's an example.

I went to an auto parts store and bought a portable car jump starter battery, similar to this https://www.amazon.com/dp/B002J8LMVC/ref=psdc_318336011_t3_B000JFHNQA

That was a couple of years ago, and now there are even more impressive things for sale. If I were to buy today, I'd probably get https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01M3S00H0?psc=1

It even says "CPAP Machine" in the supported devices list. The basic premise is that I knew my CPAP machine runs on approximately 12 volts DC, and I knew that most starter batteries supply about 13.5 volts when charged up. Since most of the electronics in the machine will run on less power (not sure how much less, but there's always some give), I figured that a strong starter battery would be good.

Car batteries are large, not because they have to deliver a lot of voltage, but because they have to deliver large amperage, lots of power at one time, without dropping too low in voltage. Since I knew that the CPAP machine would use a little power for a longish time, I didn't need a huge, heavy battery.

Doing some math, 12 volts at 2 amps is 24 watts. That's nothing, really. The CPAP battery for my unit is just under 100 Wh, with an output range of 9 to 12.6 volts. So, that jumpstarted battery for half the price with 150 Wh of capacity at 12 volts is almost 3 times the value.

  1. Depends on the resin, some are smellier than others.
  2. Yup that would work, or there's an adapter on thingiverse that allows you to attach 4 inch hose with a extractor fan (that's what I use) and it outputs through a carbon filter. 4. Yes but it's near useless. You really have to go with a secondary fan/filter combo to get any serious filtration.

I have been growing a bunch of different plants at my cubicle desk at work - which means nowhere near enough sunlight even for a spider plant - and that includes quite a few cottonwood seedlings who are all doing very well.

I use an LED grow light at home and and the office desk that does a lot for plants.

>Bulb: https://www.amazon.com/SANSI-Daylight-Spectrum-Sunlight-Greenhouse/dp/B07BRKG7X1/
>
>Lamp: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HX2EVPS/

It is a full spectrum light that is in the same range as natural sunlight. It has been perfect for me, every plant I have put under it has started putting out new growth almost right away and bends toward it just like they do with the sun. (Which is how I am getting interesting curves in my seedlings.)

You do need to keep the lamp about 16 to 18 inches from the plant to get the full amount of light for it though, but it will not put off any amount of heat worth worrying about.

u/dillishis · 2 pointsr/GrowingMarijuana

If anyone would like to chime in, this is the grow light I’ve been using.

It gets full morning sun for about three-four hours and then I move it into a spare room and it stays under that.

u/rooorooorawr · 2 pointsr/houseplants

For a very wide palm, I'd use 2 grow lights, each angled at it from above. However, if you hang a strong enough light up to 24" directly above, it should still benefit. The lower fronds would naturally receive dappled light anyway. I'd monitor it for etiolation, then maybe decide if I want 2 lights instead.

It's true that the bulbs must be quite close to the plants. 24" is as far as I would go. LED lights can be a bit farther away than fluorescent. I use 40 watt LED grow lights to supplement sunlight. Even my plants that sit over 24" away appear to benefit. The closest plants grow the best, though. My lights are in a clamp light and a normal lamp.

I use this one, as I prefer white light:

https://www.amazon.com/SANSI-Daylight-Spectrum-Sunlight-Greenhouse/dp/B07BRKG7X1/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?crid=31BY0GSV495O8&keywords=sansi+grow+light&qid=1556076681&s=gateway&sprefix=sansi+grow&sr=8-3

Edited to add: light reflection makes a huge difference. A silver or white reflector would reduce wasted light. My clamp light reflects the light with its aluminum shade. My lamp has a white shade interior.

u/ghoulapool · 2 pointsr/Citrus

For large scale, shelving grow light set ups, I like the Durolux Led https://www.amazon.com/dp/B079GJ11ZC/ref=pe_2640190_232748420_TE_item but an LED bulb like this https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07BRKT56T/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o06__o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 with an aluminum clamp lamp reflector is nice and adjustable for smaller (and cheaper!) setups.

Sansi makes the best grow lights, they’re LEDs so they use very little power, don’t generate a lot of heat, and can be used in any fixture standard fixture. You can get them in 10W, 15W, 24W, 30W, 40W and so on, they even make some huge square ones, I use a 70W for a tree I’m overwintering.

Absolutely, I think it would really do some good for them! I recently got my grow lights for my winter / fall set-up and they've been working wonders. I've gotten 2 happy blooms in response and tons of compact growth and sun stress.

I've been using these: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07RTVD1HJ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 They're bright white like natural light and very strong and effective. They can be pretty close to your plants and not scorch them, and produce a moderately warm heat (it never gets to be too much from being on 16 hours) which I've found helps protect them from getting too cold since I keep my apartment kind of chilly!

I've also seen a cheaper option, used as a single lamp bulb by a reddit user in r/haworthia here. It's a lower price point and I nearly got it for a starter grow light. If you're wary of spending too much, I'd recommend this one: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07BRKT56T/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_4VprDbKA7T01X they've said a lot of good things about it!

u/aredua · 2 pointsr/houseplants

I use a 30W SANSI Grow Light for my succulents and a 15W bulb for tropical plants on a different shelf. They fit into a standard lamp socket. The light is very bright and white, which I prefer. It was pricey but my plants are doing a lot better since I started using these bulbs a month ago.

u/innerbootes · 2 pointsr/plants

Sure, I got the 24W. Sansi also sells them via their website. You should figure out your requirements before buying, they have a variety of wattages.

u/nazgulscreams · 2 pointsr/succulents

Also if you are really having a hard time finding full enough sun you could try to order some lights for the plant, these I've heard are decent. https://www.amazon.com/Upgraded-Dimmable-Spectrum-Adjustable-Gooseneck/dp/B07H57K565/ref=sr_1_4?keywords=led+plant+light&qid=1566226877&s=gateway&sr=8-4 There are other sufficient ones on amazon but I think these are the least expensive (still $19), and have a timing function.

u/vndeadnightmare · 2 pointsr/succulents

Thank you! Do you happen to know anything about grow lights? It’s always rainy in PA so I think that’s also contributing. Do you think this 60W Full Spectrum option is sufficient?

So the one you see on the top is this one:

Winjoy Grow Light, 30W LED Grow... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07JLJFWNY?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

But my plants don’t love it, they kind of put up with it. They seem to do better with this light but they only come with two heads and the cart needs three for good coverage.

Grow Light, Ankace [2018 Upgraded... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07H57K565?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

The succs stress better with this second light than they do with the first one too! The third row I have this lamp for my light hogs.

I only keep one side on at a time because I’m afraid to melt my plants but I just got this one and am a novice user!

Hope this helps you decide on one! I know how tedious it is to pick some lamps out, especially online.

u/nillah · 2 pointsr/houseplants

I bought this one a couple weeks ago, it works great so far. My only complaint is it doesn't have a timer or anything built in. I just bought this also (I have a lot of plants to cover lol), I think the light spectrum might be different, and it also has a timer built in so you can set it to stay on for 6 or 12 hours or something. They both are able to just clamp on to the edge of your bookshelf.

You could also get a power strip with a timer built in, that way you can plug the light(s) into it and they'll come on each day automatically, and you don't have to worry about buying a specific light with one included.

u/i_suck_at_aiming · 2 pointsr/smoking

They actually make these, she even mentions Camerons in the video

http://www.amazon.com/Stovetop-Smoker-Original-Camerons-Stainless/dp/B00004SZ9D

u/theoxfordtailor · 2 pointsr/smoking

Have you ever tried to use a Cameron's smoker?

It's not "true" smoking, but it does put a great smoky flavor into food. I live in an apartment and use mine all the time. I've used it to make everything from spaghetti sauce to poultry.

u/rockstang · 2 pointsr/Cooking

I'd have to agree with the pit master... Albeit, I am biased as an amateur BBQ enthusiast. I'm not saying oven brisket can't be good, but it is an apple to oranges comparison. The cooking process is very different without smoke exposure. I feel like liquid smoke is a poor means of replicating the flavor. It can be done right but easily overdone. What kind of space are you working with? There are small vertical smokers. Do you have any room for a small grill? [This] (https://www.amazon.com/Stovetop-Smoker-Stainless-Indoor-Outdoor/dp/B00004SZ9D) seems like more trouble than it's worth but may be an option if you have good ventilation.

u/capitolheel · 2 pointsr/Charcuterie

FWIW, I live in a small apartment and smoke my own bacon and other things all the time. I've got one of these stovetop smokers and it imparts a great deal of smoke to the meat without actually producing much smoke at all. Your place will smell a little but it is no worse than regular cooking and really, there are worse things than having your place smell like bacon for a couple hours!

u/seattleque · 2 pointsr/smoking

My wife got me one for Christmas, and I've used it for smoking a few times so far. I've used it so far on fresh tomatoes (for making Bloody Mary mix), salmon, chicken, and pork chops. A little teaspoon of the wood chips (they go a long way...) produces a lot of smoke.

It definitely works well for smoking delicate meats (and now I'm going to try it on cocktails!). Putting smoke into pans covered with foil / plastic wrap, and into ziplocs, the smoke will leak into the room, so be aware of that. Also, I've found for some things that 2 or 3 applications of smoke may be needed.

I am looking forward to experimenting with teas and dried herbs (Earl Grey-smoked pork?) - but don't think coffee would work in it.

Will this work on anything large you want to smoke? Probably not. But something like ribs, with maybe several applications over several hours? Maybe.

You might also look into a stove-top smoker. It will cook and smoke, but also something you want to use with a window open...

u/mark0210 · 2 pointsr/smoking

Nope, not at all!

u/ghostphantom · 2 pointsr/NoStupidQuestions

You could get a bug vacuum like this one. That one has a pretty long arm so you wouldn't have to get too close. I use an electric flyswatter (I found one at a hardware store for like $5 and it works perfectly, you can actually smell the bugs burning when you zap them) in my house for any and all creatures with more than 4 limbs.

u/Stinky_Eastwood · 2 pointsr/Traeger

CookinPellets are pretty great, too.

u/Bobdole462 · 2 pointsr/smoking

I started with these. It gave me some sample size to see what woods I liked with what meats. I use these probably 90% of the time though as they are great overall for anything that I am smoking. The 40 pound bag last quite a while. Make sure to get an airtight container as humidity and moisture are the enemy. I got a 30 pound dog food container on Amazon and it works perfectly. Living in Florida I had to microwave my pellets before I found out they were just damp from the humidity.

Agree with Diamonddan73 below, make sure to tent your tray so no drippings get on the pellets. Never tried the mailbox mod as the tray would give me about 12 hours of smoke when it was full.

u/Bufo_Stupefacio · 2 pointsr/jerky

If I recall correctly, I used CookinPellets Perfect Mix in the hopper and CookinPellets Hickory in an A-MAZE-N tube to add more smoke.

u/sitkagear · 2 pointsr/Traeger

This has been a long time discussion among peller smoker users. Traeger uses a ton of fillers and not much real wood.

https://www.smokingmeatforums.com/threads/new-info-on-whats-in-traeger-pellets.116254/

Here's a quote from the article regarding what makes up certain flavors of pellets.

>After some back and forth she said she would try and get me some info and took my #. I would have bet anyone 100 bucks that I never would hear back from her but today she called me and said she got a note from the mill with a breakdown of whats in the pellets. The base wood if you are on the west coast is alder and the east coast is oak. Mesquite or Hickory 100% base wood (alder or oak) with flavor oils no actual Mesquite or Hickory wood in the pellet

Honestly, Traeger's quality has gone downhill since they got big. Maybe ownership change? Either way, this aligns with their current business strategy; charge more for less quality.

If you want to make a pellet change, which I would recommend, CookinPellets is the number one recommendation among pellet smoker users.

https://www.amazon.com/CookinPellets-40PM-Perfect-Mix/dp/B00819OICI/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?keywords=wood+pellets&qid=1571774072&sr=8-1-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUEzRkk3MDJESk9NTDRIJmVuY3J5cHRlZElkPUEwNDkxNjgwMVpGVTk2VkxKVTlDOSZlbmNyeXB0ZWRBZElkPUEwNDE3OTg5M0o2SkZXMkk4RklNMSZ3aWRnZXROYW1lPXNwX2F0ZiZhY3Rpb249Y2xpY2tSZWRpcmVjdCZkb05vdExvZ0NsaWNrPXRydWU=

u/outrunu · 2 pointsr/Traeger

So, I've come to the conclusion....Fuck traeger pellets. They are oil injected oak. They aren't true to the flavor. I've recently switched to these, and the smoke is night and day. What I'm used to seeing and tasting from my smoker.

u/nssdrone · 2 pointsr/Traeger

If you are gonna spend as much money on Pellets as the Traeger brand costs, then I suggest go to Amazon for some CookinPellets, they have either the Perfect Mix, or Hickory

Those are twice the size bags of Traeger, so keep that in mind when comparing price.

I use the perfect mix when I'm smoking stuff. If I am just using the Traeger for heat, for example when I have ribs wrapped in foil or I'm grilling burgers, I use cheap stuff that I get at Cash and Carry. They are $6.99 a bag and basically the same as Traeger, which is Alder wood mixed with a little flavor wood.

u/LVOgre · 2 pointsr/smoking

I made 6 loins a couple of weeks ago on a Traeger Pro 34. With a different smoker, I would probably have just done them at 225-275 the whole way, but with the Traeger it's super easy to bring the temperature up.

I rubbed them and smoked for about an hour at 225, then cranked it up to 350, pulling them at 140 and rested for 30 minutes. They carried over to 145-150, which was perfect.

I think I got them all done in about 90 minutes, there was a really good smoke flavor, and that high temp finish gave them a nice texture on the outside.

I've been using these pellets:

https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00819OICI

u/bigdpix · 2 pointsr/smoking

I've also struggled with getting strong smoke flavor from the Traeger. I've been using these pellets and the results have been great! http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00819OICI?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_search_detailpage

Still not as strong as smoking with my old propane and wood chunk rig, but I'm finding that not standing over the smoker all day leaves my palate more sensitive to pellet smoke. My wife says she likes things like turkey better with these pellets than my old rig because it tastes less like an ashtray ;)

I did experiment with an add on tube smoker to add more flavor, and even propped real chunks of wood on that. It helped, but it ends up being as arduous as my pre-pellet days ;)

u/Studsmanly · 2 pointsr/smoking

u/nofattiesplease · 2 pointsr/chemicalreactiongifs

No, that was a burst of flame. I'm pretty sure they just tossed sawdust into the fire. For something more impressive, you can get packets of different minerals and salts and stuff, which spark and colorize when lit on fire.

https://www.amazon.com/Mystical-Fire-Campfire-Fireplace-Colorant/dp/B008LM32QS

u/JerrathBestMMO · 2 pointsr/shroomers

Bring a blanket and preferably one that you can clasp together around your neck. Shrooms always make me feel coldish.

You need to think of your fire stuff. Portable grill? Charcoal? It's best for cooking. Bonfire? Best for atmosphere but restricts what you can cook. I'd personally be happy with hotdog buns and hotdogs which were cooked on a stick over a bonfire. By the time I get hungry, I have enough control over myself to cook a hotdog.

If you make a bonfire, then bring a small hatchet, sharp knife and a bow saw. You don't need these tools but if you got them, you can improvise furniture. You willlll need something to relax on. Either bring camping chairs or make some in the field.

Check out wilderness outfitters on youtube.

Maybe you wanna make a ritual of a sort of the mushroom consumption? How about you bring a nice big pot in which you make mushroom tea. First you labor to get firewood and get the fire going, then you watch as the tea is brewing. And then you all drink it together.

Bring portable lamps or these headlights. Flashlights are okay too but are annoying to use when you need both hands.

Maybe something funny like this? https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B008LM32QS/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1523283294&sr=8-1&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=fire+powder

That's a flame colorant. You throw it into your bonfire and the flames will have different colors.

Not a solution for carrying gear while shooting but the best purchase I ever made when shooting weddings was a fold-able wagon like this:

I'm using one of these to haul my stuff in and out. I'm gonna have to move my computer quite a few times times since I'm getting in on Monday and leaving Monday after(up to the hotel room, down to the byoc, back up to the hotel room during tear down and then out to the car Monday morning). That walk would get old real fast if I had to carry it each time. I especially like it because the inside is entirely canvas and padded on the bottom. It was a little expensive but worth it. I'll use it for beach/camping trips the rest of the year.

Thanks for the explanation, I guess I kind of already knew this but just wasn't sure. This is exactly what I was looking for!

Normally I have 4 inch inline going during the day, but it currently turns off at night... I know I need to change it to always on. And a 6 inch circular that is always on and not facing them. The inline makes a good breeze where the intake is next to the bigger plant

u/skoomd1 · 2 pointsr/microgrowery

Well if an ounce is all you want, check out /r/SpaceBuckets. I could never get myself to do it as growing a weed plant, even just 1, is a huge investment of your time, resources, and effort. I think about it like: If I can get 1-2oz from a spacebucket in the same 3-5 months time, why not invest money that'll make itself back twice over just the first grow (even if you dont sell any, to me getting 1000$ of weed from my grow is making my 1000$ back but ima stoner lol)
and spend my 3-5 months growing 16-20oz.

Ya know? But I can understand why some people can't or dont want to.

Well, I wouldn't buy a tent kit/package. You could go with a 24"x24" tent like this one then buy your light and carbon filter/inline fan seperate.

iPower is a good inexpensive brand to start with for your fan/filter. A 4" fan is more than enough for that size.

Hello there, I recently started growing and purchased all new items. The fan you chose simply won't work. You will be very disappointed in the performance. I was going to use that fan as an inflow booster with a pre-filter. I quickly returned it because it just did not move enough air. The fan could not create positive pressure in the tent. I then tried this fan: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01M7S46YZ/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1495901534&sr=8-3&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=4+inch+inline+fan&dpPl=1&dpID=41G0I96VBVL&ref=plSrch

I ended up returning that one as well because it was advertised as 200cfm and it was not moving anywhere near the same air amount as the first fan I bought. I then broke down and bought the same fan I originally purchased as my outflow fan and filter. I bought just the fan for 56.00 as an inflow fan and put a pre-filter on it.

Then you will want to get a 5630 led strip for side lighting. Like this:

Although I wouud recommend searching on Amazon for "5630 led strip" and looking for one that is both waterproof, adhesive backed and has a usb connector for easy installation. The one I linked is just the LED strip on its own.

Using a UFO LED is pretty great for a spacebucket since it fits well in the cover, and they're not too expensive. I would use this with the blackout guide that is stickied.

u/BanginNLeavin · 2 pointsr/SpaceBuckets

I am using a 138w UFO in my first grow. The plants are doing nice, I am sure more watt would be good but it suits its purpose of being a cheap intro.

UFO

Strip Light

I would say this intensity is suitable for seedling. The strip lights are between 0.1 inch and 5 inches from the leaves and the UFO is about 7 inches from the canopy right now and its fine.

I will be buying stuff for a second bucket and refining my technique and I will opt for a brighter UFO, thinking whether I should reorder the LED strip or not though as it seems like its good.

I purchased some lithium packs that offer 12v 9v and 5v. I use this for my BMPCC OG and Fuji X-T2 external. 5V to 12V takes almost 3x the current at 5V to get the same at 12V due to losses.

u/treefarmercharlie · 2 pointsr/microgrowery

Yeah, that looks like it's still in veg to me. Have you thought about investing in a tent? They really aren't that expensive and even the cheap ones do a decent job of blocking the light enough. I have the 48" x 48" version of THIS TENT and I haven't had any issues with it. That page shows the prices for all the sizes for that tent, too.

$106.30 at 39% off now the 4x4 is cheaper than the 3x3. I love my 3x3, it's just the right size for four plants, but if you have the space the 4x4 gives a little more space and options with it. The 2x4 is short which is a little more difficult to work with.

u/johndoe60610 · 2 pointsr/pelletgrills

Congrats! Something I wish I'd done sooner is add some insulation around the lid. Cheap and effective way to keep smoke (and heat) from billowing out the sides. Helps reduce pellet use and lessen temperature fluctuations.

Some comments and suggestions to the others with the same smoker. Its a Dynaglo and it comes in two sizes, the one pictured is the small one. I have the larger size, and it would probably accommodate 2 turkeys... I don't have to cut my rib slabs or briskets or anything down to size with the large one, it all fits - the smaller ones you might have to cut up your larger pieces of meat to make it fit.

The inside right side is all a hot spot, even heat distribution is difficult. I added these things across the bottom shelf that helps with heat distribution:
https://www.amazon.com/Grill-Greats-4806-45-Briquettes-Grilling/dp/B00FIX8QA0
I've also seen people make heat shields/baffles to try and get the heat moving to the other side. This is probably a much bigger problem with the large version though.

As OP stated, get some food grade RTV and seal it up real well, large version comes with oven door rope style seal on main door and 2 buckles to close it up tight, so it seals well. You may also want some heat seal like this for the doors on the smaller version https://www.amazon.com/LavaLock-Performance-gasket-smoker-STICK/dp/B01F9FE60K/ref=sr_1_11_sspa?s=lawn-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1522606446&sr=1-11-spons&keywords=bbq+door+heat+seal&psc=1

Im also assuming OP added his own water pan, as I dont believe either size comes with one - the large one does not however.

u/Wangus · 2 pointsr/smoking

Something like this is what i would traditionally use to seal a fireplace or smoker. There's cording out there too, but the flat sealer would probably work better if you have an offset with a curved lid.

u/Semper_Fidelity · 2 pointsr/Traeger

Get a roll of gasket sealing foam and put it all around the edge of the opening of the door:

For those interested, here's a pic of the inside.

Here's a list of my mods.

  • Grommet on the side for probe access: So handy! The most useful mod. I used this titanium drill bit to create a hole large enough. It took me about an hour of sweating my butt off with the drill to make the hole. I feel like this mod is a must because if you use any kind of probe this will be a lifesaver. Constantly closing and opening the lid of the smoker with the wire in the way will eventually damage the wire. With this grommet bypassing the door entirely, you don't risk damaging the wire anytime you open or close the lid. If your hand slips when opening the lid and the lid slams down, it can CUT the probe wire! Lifesaver indeed.
  • Lavalock Thermometers x2: I bought two of these for both sides. Tested them for accuracy with boiling water and they work pretty great.
  • Lavalock Gaskets: I used these to seal the lid of the main chamber. It helps create a seal for lower smoke leakage.
  • Clamps: These make 100% sure you are airtight when smoking. When used together with the gaskets, I get virtually no leakage from the main chamber. One annoying thing though is that the clamp installed on the side of the fire chamber can get in the way of you opening and closing the fire chamber lid. But, overall I'm happy with them, especially for longer cooks.
  • High Temp Silicone Caulk: This is a MUST. The areas around the smoke chamber leak smoke SO MUCH. I've used it to seal around every nook and cranny of the fire chamber and it's done wonders.
  • Water pan: Not sure if this counts as a mod, but it's just a simple steel water pan.
  • Oklahoma Joe Firebox Basket: The reverse flow smoker came included with this. I think the regular Highland Smoker does not have it. In my opinion, it is extremely helpful in maintaining heat throughout your cook and makes the temperature fluctuate less.
u/heybroooody · 2 pointsr/pelletgrills

I put this on the lid (rather around the barrel where the lid closes) on my Pit Boss and am thrilled with the difference in smoke going out of the chimney rather than the lid.

You might try a Cameron's Stovetop Smoker. I've been using it for years - for beef, pork, chicken and fish. It's a real treat for indoor smoking.

The Stovetop Smoker is a tightly sealed metal drawer that sits on the stove. As the burner underneath heats up, the wood chips smoke, sending smoke around the baffle, up to your food. Very little smoke escapes, so there's not much to vent.

They usually come with a few types of wood chips and a recipe book. Try the Scotch Eggs or smoked trout.

u/foulpudding · 1 pointr/mildlyinfuriating

Smoke it on a stovetop smoker.

This article will give you a good overview: http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9901E0D6153FF934A25752C1A9629C8B63

This is the smoker you want: http://www.amazon.com/Stovetop-Smoker-Original-Camerons-Stainless/dp/B00004SZ9D/ref=sr_1_1?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1416272496&sr=1-1&keywords=cameron+stove+top+smoker

A turkey is too big to fit flat inside the smoker. You'll be making a dome of heavy-duty aluminum foil, smoking the bird on the stove for an hour or so, and finishing it off in the oven.

Don't worry about collecting a piece of cookware you'll only use once. A stovetop smoker is a wonderful tool for an apartment dweller. Salmon, chicken, pork, and root vegetables are out of this world when cooked on a smoker.

u/robinlmorris · 1 pointr/AskCulinary

I smoked meat in my oven a few times when I lived in an apartment.

You can buy something like this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00004SZ9D or build your own with a large aluminum foil pan, lots of aluminum foil, and a baking rack. Regardless, you should use special indoor wood chips and the Camron instructions for indoor smoking. As you can see from the reviews, a lot of people do smoke indoors. It will make your apartment smell like BBQ and if you have a sensitive smoke detector, you may want to cover it or take it down (I have always had to take down apartment kitchen "smell" detectors everywhere I have ever lived)

With this method, I got a nice smoke taste on the meat, but not as much as a real smoker, so I also added liquid smoke to my BBQ sauce. Now that I have a real smoker, I still add liquid smoke to my BBQ sauce as it just makes it better.

u/Silverbug · 1 pointr/Cooking

My dad has a Little Chief electric smoker, and they make a smaller version. (http://www.amazon.com/Smokehouse-Products-Mini-Chief-Smoker/dp/B001NZRLTO). I personally have had the Emson 5-qt indoor electric smoker (https://home.woot.com/offers/emson-5-qt-electric-indoor-pressure-cooker-smoker?ref=cnt_dly_tl), but it only lasted about a year. There are some stovetop smokers as well if you want to go that route, like the Camerons (http://www.amazon.com/Stovetop-Smoker-Original-Camerons-Stainless/dp/B00004SZ9D/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1450200138&sr=8-2&keywords=indoor+smoker) that have good reviews.

Also I smoked some pumpkin in my stovetop smoker and pureed it and added it to this Black Bean hummus recipe I found on reddit - whoa delicious.

u/staypuff626 · 1 pointr/gainit

There's also the option of using an inexpensive stovetop smoker. Obviously you wont be able to cook anywhere near the volume of a larger, freestanding smoker, but the stovetop smokers work fantastic all the same and you can't beat the price/convenience.

u/fluttercat · 1 pointr/ketorecipes

Two things that I use all the time that I don't see mentioned:

Stovetop Smoker. With all the meat I cook, being able to smoke it gives it a whole new depth of flavors without adding any carbs and makes even simple dishes special. Very inexpensive too once you buy the initial smoker. I bough a bunch of different types of wood chips and they've lasted me about half a year now. Even in my small apartment there's hardly any smoke leak (although I do crimp foil around the edges to help keep it in) and I've never set off the smoke detector with it. If you do have an big outdoor smoker this one is nice for doing smaller portions or if the weather's not great outside. Highly recommend it if you like smoked foods.

Vacuum sealer is the other item I use all the time. I like buying certain staples from Costco in bulk (chicken/beef/pork/etc) and being able to portion it out and freeze it has helped cut down on the cost of keto a lot. It's also useful as a good timesaver or to keep food fresh for longer even if you don't freeze it. For example, I often only use about a quarter of an onion in a lot of recipes, but I'll chop the whole thing and seal the rest so it stays fresh for the next few days. I'll then take however much onion I need out the next day and re-seal the bag.

I don't have a brand I recommend over another, I personally have a Rival that I got for Christmas. A lot of people really like Foodsavers and I see them at Costco all the time. They can be inexpensive (~$40) for a basic one or more costly if you want extra features like canning or automatic sealing or different speeds. I do recommend not using whatever brand of bags they tell you to use however. What I do is buy cheap bulk bags such as these and use them instead. Zero problems with them and much cheaper than the brand name ones. I do keep a roll of 'cut your own' around in case I need something bigger, but I find for about 90% of what I do the smaller bulk bags work fine.

If you keep an eye out on meat sales and buy in bulk or buy a lot of meat that's about to expire for cheap, I think the vacuum sealer will pretty quickly pay for itself.

And tossing it out there, one item that's not necessary but in the 'nice to have' category is the immersion blender. Great for thickening soups since we don't add cornstarch or other traditional thickeners, and it's nice for other things like making your own mayonnaise. I also use it for making my own marinara sauce - mine has zucchini and cheese blended in. Again, not necessary and you can probably use a regular blender for this, but the immersion blender is really nice and convenient.

A few years ago, some yellow-jackets built a nest inside the wall of my house. They were getting in and out through an unsealed crack between two boards in the external siding. I initially thought of just sealing the crack, but wasn't sure what would happen with all those live wasps inside the wall. I then remembered my wife had purchased a handheld bug zapper. Frying the little bastards as they tried to fly in or out of the nest was wicked fun, and I laughed maniacally as I cooked the little demons. There must have been 100 dead wasps on the ground at the end of the day. I later sealed the siding crack and they never came back.

I use pellets in a Green Mountain Grills Daniel Boone.

I've only used their Gold blend and Texas blends so far and I honestly can't tell much of a difference between the two. They both give a great smoky flavor on all cuts of meat I've tried (chicken, brisket, burgers, boston butt, wings, pork chops, and ribs).

I bought some new pellets yesterday that a lot of people have recommended. I'm looking forward to trying those this weekend.

If I'm wanting a really spicy rub, I use Rudy's Rub.

For everything else, I use a thin layer of Killer Hogs Hot BBQ Rub with a layer of their Regular BBQ Rub over it.

I was afraid the novelty would wear off with the pellet smoker, but we use it probably more than our regular grill now. Plus, I get multiple meals out of it throughout the week.

I can't speak highly enough for the Amaze N smoker. I think it gives the most possible bang for the buck.

Mischief Managed!

There's an overarching theory behind how these will all help with a school experience. Which is, basically, that you need to have fun in between studying. All work and no play makes jack a dull boy, goes the saying.

  • So, since we're talking about wine, I thought I should point out that one of my favorite ways of enjoying wine is with a nice bath. And what better way to make that prospect quite a bit safer, than with this piece of heaven?
  • Next, we come to brooms. What else would a wizard or witch ride? You know what else is interesting about witches? According to Harry Potter, they basically enjoy a tickling sensation while pretending to be burned at the stake (I swear I remember this from the books). Since they're already having fun with it, I think they should have even more fun by turning the flames colors.
  • You know who wears a lovely hat? Well, bonnet. A pretty, floral bonnet. Captain Mal Reynolds. I could surely use this to maximize my time enjoying Captain Mal's world.
  • This one is a tough one. Because there are so many books I could want, but that's such a traditional explanation... So, since we're talking about books as a journey, I really wanted to put a choose-your-own-adventure book. But it hasn't come out yet, so I'll have to content myself with this journey provoker.
  • Moving on to trunks. Trunks are storage, right? And I've got a bunch of jewelry that's just begging for a home. This looks like the perfect place for it.
  • Finally, we come to capes. Superheros, wizards, Sherlock Holmes. All these people have a history of wearing capes. And wizards are a strange people, and we sometimes need to work to understand strange people. This book might help guide the way.

Riddle the First: Goblet. Since it is likely to be on fire, I might as well have some fun little Mystical Fire Campfire Fireplace Colorant Packets to toss into it. They make the flames change colors, without the use of an incantation.

Riddle the Second: A broomstick. I can't afford a top of the line Nimbus, so I've got to worry about getting splinters. Luckily I'm handy and could use this power sander to get rid of them and have a smooth ride.

Riddle the Third: A hat. I get horrible hat-hair, s the Revlon Volume Stay Titanium Hot Air Kit would be on my person all day, every day.

Riddle the Fourth: A book/multiple books. Most of my books are on the Kindle App now, and at some point I'd like to get an actual Kindle. I would give it the Verso Prologue cover. It's a Kindle holder that looks like a physical book. Pretty!

Riddle the Fifth: A traveling trunk. One problem with storing things in a trunk is that you end up with moth-eaten fabric. I plan on keeping moths out of my robes by spraying the interior of the box with the Cedar Spray.

Riddle the Sixth/Bonus: A cape! You know who wears a cape? DARTH VADER. How about a little cross-series cosplay mash-up? Darth Vader Costume With Cape, Belt And Mask This way I can have fun and pretend I'm using The Force, but really I'd be using legit magic. The worst thing about those commercial fire color packets is that they contain PVC, which gives off nasty things when you burn it, like dioxins.

Here is an example product: https://www.amazon.ca/Mystical-Fire-Colorant-Long-Lasting-Pulsating/dp/B008LM32QS/ref=sr_1_3?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIjtDkruSC5QIVBYeGCh1oLg85EAAYAiAAEgIfP_D_BwE&hvadid=208340282565&hvdev=c&hvlocphy=2124&hvnetw=g&hvpos=1t2&hvqmt=e&hvrand=7654768388467666065&hvtargid=kwd-331763882354&hydadcr=11757_9281833&keywords=color+fire&qid=1570198307&sr=8-3

You can see the PVC listed as the third ingredient. I'd honestly worry more about that than the metals salts.

I bought this one and used it to hike in less than a mile over rough terrain and it worked well. I think I overloaded its weight capacity with firewood and one of the wheel mounts bent SLIGHTLY. Still works perfectly though, and I can’t fault it because I overloaded it.

I’d recommend.

I do wish I spent a little more and got this one. We saw it at the beach and it seems even better.

To stay low budget, you could use PC case fans. It depends on how stealth you need to be. If you need a filter for the smell, you might have to go with a legit ventilation kit which would be another $100 on Amazon. like this one

u/shadowonyx23 · 1 pointr/SpaceBuckets

Carbon filter eliminated nearly all odor. I went the first 3 or so weeks without it, then the smell started coming on strong as it was starting to preflower. Bought the filter and it was night and day. Highly suggest it.

u/FargusFaustmeister · 1 pointr/SpaceBuckets

I imagine you could purchase these activated charcoal sheets that you can cut to size! Tape a plate with a hole over it and you should be able to cut any size you want. The fan you spec'd looks like it should be able to handle the load that the charcoal filter will cause (it is going to be like trying to breathe through a straw rather than just your mouth).

Another option would be something like this where you have an all in one filter/blower system. It's more money but it will handle all that obstruction better. Alternatively you can go to a harware store and buy an inline duct booster. You should be able to control the fan speed with a big triac or possibly PWM signal.

I use this high quality, organic soil that you only have to add tap water to (no nutes or pH - this is NOT the case with all soils, however).

You could literally just throw some of that in a pot in a closet, then hang a light like this from the clothing bar that you would normally put hangers and whatnot on and just add water whenever the soil gets dry.

You should get some high quality bud from that setup for pretty cheap. Wont yield much with only that light, but you can add another light on the next grow or when you have more $$$.

u/Hasralo · 1 pointr/SpaceBuckets

I'm not saying that telemarketers are necessary, but there are a lot of folks making a living talking on the telephone whose days are numbered.

You realize that there are already autonomous trucks operating in oil fields as we speak, right? Or that the insurance firms are already trying to figure out how they'll deal with driverless vehicles when they hit the road?

Meanwhile, a Chinese construction firm is in the process of rolling out 3D printed buildings, and have stated that the technology reduces labor needs by 70 - 80%.

And then there's the "lawn roomba" that you can already buy on amazon, but don't worry, they also come in professional grade versions if you're dealing with large areas.

I know people want to trot out the Luddite fallacy every time someone says that 'robots will take our jobs', but there are some really smart folks who are pretty convinced that this time it's going to be different.

And it's not even that robots will take all of the jobs, but automation is going to begin hollowing out the employment market soon (and already is), and thanks to Moore's law, once it starts in earnest, it will only pick up speed.

This might be what your looking for: It is essentially a contained 3S - 3.7V - li-ion battery with a BMS. It also has a low power 2A USB output to power the 5V device. The 5V might be too weak for your application.

I will give you two scenarios, one 1s and the other 3S.

1S solution:

  • Multiple cells in parallel
  • Some undervoltage protection
  • A 4.2V cccv charger (NO ADAPTER)
  • A 5V boost converter
  • a 12V boost converter

    3S solution (3.7V nominal li-ion):

  • A 3S battery
  • A fully functional BMS with balancing and undervoltage protection
  • a 12.6V cccv charger (NO ADAPTER)
  • A 5V buck converter
  • A 12V buck/boost converter (might be optional)

    3S solution (3.35V nominal li-ion LFP):

  • A 4S battery
  • A fully functional BMS with balancing and undervoltage protection
  • a 14.4V cccv charger (NO ADAPTER)
  • A 5V buck converter
  • A 12V buck/boost converter (might be optional)

u/Monster-Zero · 1 pointr/IWantToLearn

Thanks :)

You could write sequences easily enough, and in fact it would be relatively trivial to fire them off spontaneously with simple pushbuttons as input to your microcontroller. When I put that costume together, I wore a little custom switchboard like a watch that had the arduino installed on it along with a series of pushbuttons and rocker switches to turn things on and off.

Syncing to music directly might be tough - certainly doable, but it may just be easier to have buttons which perform preprogrammed actions. There are a lot of ways things could go awry when trying to line up audio with circuits. For professional shows it's better to have an engineer or two (on further viewing, it looks like they had 3 guys manning this in the show) on the sidelines controlling all that stuff, but if it's just you a simpler and more adaptable route might be to program 8 or so actions, wire buttons from the arduino to your fingertips to fire them off, and rely on your own timing and coordination to get things really moving. Just a suggestion to avoid overcomplicating things, and using such a technique also allows you to be a bit more adaptable (say, for example, if you want to use the surrounding music like at a club as opposed to needing your own).

Also /u/Tinkrr2 is right about the voltage requirements varying by brand - make sure you look into that. Finally, if you're looking to make this into a semi-permanent hobby then it helps to have an adjustable power supply handy. A beefy battery, a sizable power supply, a few barrel jacks, some Dupont connectors, and most importantly an adjustable buck converter will take you very far. I wouldn't worry too much about any of this now, but if you decide you like tinkering with electronics (especially LEDs, which have moderate power requirements) that would be a terrific start.

u/lightmeup17 · 1 pointr/lightingdesign

I'm using these batteries.

They've had no trouble running all the lights so far. I'm running just 192 addressable led pixels, they run at 5V. Even if they only work for 1 hour, that should be fine for most performances I have in mind.

Do you work with Lightjams? Do you think it's worth the investment for the license? I am about to get it, just wondering your experience.

u/2old2care · 1 pointr/bmpcc

I've had good experiences with these off-the-shelf packs:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00935L44E/
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00XMM4ZZE/

This one isn't regulated but works fairly well with some loss of sync range as the battery depletes:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B016BJCRUO/

Many similar ones are suitable. Better to use regulated ones than simple "12V" battery packs, which are typically 12.3-12.6 V fully charged and drop off as the batteries discharge. The slightly higher voltage is fine, as is the drop towards 9 Volt, but their management ICs will normally cut off the load before the cells might be damaged by excessive discharge. The low voltage cut-out in the base will turn off the base station before it might get confused by too low a voltage if the battery pack is unprotected - such as with primary cell holders.

I recently purchased a welding blanket that perfects goes around my Pro 34 that helps insulate and WAY cheaper;
3' X 3' Tillman Panoxidized Felt... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005H2N9DQ?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

They make high strength magnets that will help keep the blanket attached.

Also felt lined the lid so no smoke escapes but also obviously insulates it;

LavaLock 12 GREY High Performance... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01F9FE60K?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

Lastly and really the first mod was I got a handfull of firebricks and put them at the bottom of the drum. Help fill dead space and reflect heat upwards (while also a heatsponge). Found some for cheap at a local tractor supply. Think home depot sells a 6 pack for $30 or something free in store pickup otherwise. 6 would be more than enough.

I did this stuff to help maximize my smoke but also reduce pellet use. I figure if you help the drum keep heat with less auger feeding you're going to get MORE smoke as a side effect as it isn't burning them up.

u/buymywayout · 1 pointr/BBQ

Buy some thermal tape (example) and seal up the door and other joints. It's crazy how much heat and smoke can escape on some units.

u/tonedef85 · 1 pointr/smoking

I have the same model and absolutely agree with everybody that said seal it first. Use the high temp rtv on the mating surface between the firebox and the smoker and the two pieces of the firebox. Then use the gasketing tape on both doors. I even went a step further and prep the surface with the flap disc on my grinder first. Lastly and I highly highly recommend start a large very hot fire in the firebox before you do any cooking and burn off the coating of paint on the firebox. You don't have to get it all off but most of it otherwise there will be a very noxious smoke coming off while you cook. I used a block of wood and scraped it off when it gets all melted to speed up the process a little bit.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01IVQ96MW/ref=cm_cr_arp_mb_bdcrb_top?ie=UTF8

It says 124 but I think that's talking about their 300w because my Vipar 300 draws actual like 130 or something according to the manual.

So if the 600 draws 240-260, that's not bad for the price. $137. And the roleadro has the white/yellow light so it would compliment one of the disco ball lights well.

I just can't find for sure what the actual on it is.

u/ismann · 1 pointr/SpaceBuckets

You can grow OG, just don't expect massive yields.

CFLs are for the spacebuckets. I wouldn't use them for tents as they're just not powerful enough. For a 2x2, you'll want a 600W light minimum regardless of how many plants in the tent. This is the light I use in my 2x2: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01IVQ96MW

If you use CFLs, you'll want two colors, 6500K and 2700K. I use 4x 6500K and 2x 2700K for veg, and then 6x 2700K for flower if using a spacebucket.

6' doesn't give you a lot to work with. But putting plants on risers (nurseries/garden supply should sell for a few dollars), and using a flood tray (again, cheaper locally) at the bottom, will keep the plants up and out of any runoff. Then you can vacuum out the excess.

/u/naturalorange has you on the right track.

Here is the link to the firmware update and instructions for the scanner: http://info.uniden.com/twiki/bin/view/UnidenMan4/BCD536HPFirmwareUpdate

What area of the country are you in and what type of things do you like to listen to? The type of radio systems in your area will give us a better idea of the best type of antenna to use. A discone is the best type to cover everything reasonably well, but you can think of it like a crossover car. Not very good at being a car, truck or van, but just ok. If your area only has 800MHz digital radio systems, a discone won't be your best choice.

The 536 doesn't have an internal battery, but because it runs on 12v DC you can wire it directly to a car battery. It can be permanently installed in a car, or you could power it during a power outage or emergency that way. Another option is a DC battery booster like a car jump pack. The 536 draws between a half and 3/4amp normally when on, so a small emergency battery pack like this will power the scanner for about 2 days before needing to be recharged.

I was in a similar situation as you. We do quite a bit of camping and our family has a non-electrified cabin we use for hunting. I recently bought this "Generator". It's probably no conducive to hiking as it is pretty heavy and it's an extra item to have to carry. However, for camping it works great. I use it with my Resmed AirSense 10 and it lasts me at least 3 nights per charge. It's nice and compact and can be charged with your vehicle. I got mine for $99 and I couldn't be happier. It's a much cheaper option than having to buy an entire second CPAP or having to buy one of the "official" battery packs.

I noticed after my plants spend the day in the sun when they come inside and rest some of the E's stand up and look stretched out the next few days. What kind of grow lights should I get? I'm about to purchase a 5-tier shelf to hold all of my succulents for winter, but I'm new to this and have never used grow lights before. Browsing through this sub I've found these two are mentioned a lot? Here's one and here's another. Which one should I get? How high above my seedlings should LED lights be? All the guidance I see online is for lighting that is massively more powerful than these. I have these grow lights which are about 20W worth of light per level.

Here are some of the plants and setup: https://imgur.com/a/YZKuB

Is it worth moving the lights even closer? What about getting more light (20W seems like a small amount to me).

u/WolverineDDS · 1 pointr/gardening

Also when you say more light how can I tell if my lights aren't bright enough? I turn them on when I get up and turn them off when I go to bed but when I first started them I was only doing about 10-12 hours a day.

Hi I am by NO means super knowledgeable about these but since nobody else has given it a shot here we are, haha.

I don't think the wattage of that light is high enough to support plant growth. The spectrum/temperature/K is sufficient, but you need more powerful lights. If that makes sense.

I have used these in tandem with a south-facing window; they are not enough to support my plants without any help, but prevented etiolation in most of my plants: some had to be moved extremely close to grow normally so... (plus I found the purple unpleasant)

I invested recently in this light, which is pricier, but has been supporting the plants on its own -- no window. It's also white which is a lot more pleasant to look at IMO. Note the specs on these and see if you can find something that works for you! Best wishes

u/adoreyou · 1 pointr/succulents

I asked a similar question the other day (sorry), but I don't feel like I have a good grasp on which light I should get... I've looked through the overwinter thread and tried to do even more research but I'm still feeling unsure.

Plan to get succulents for indoor. They won't get much light from the window that is nearby. Don't know what kind of succulents I'll be getting yet specifically, but hoping for pink. Out of these three LEDs, which would be best? They seem a bit similar to me but since I'm new and feeling overwhelmed with lighting, I would like some extra opinions.

u/King_of_Anything · 1 pointr/Citrus

It depends on quite a few factors, though the two most important ones are probably the indoor location and whether you want your plant to continue fruiting during winter.

Because I house my lemon tree in a living room, I personally like full-spectrum LEDs that mimic sunlight best (i.e. none of that blurple BS which is very hard on the eyes). My current setup uses a 36W Sansi Full Spectrum LED (which is equivalent to a 200W incandescent).

If your plant is right beside a south/southwest-facing window (almost touching the glass), you can probably get away with a lower-energy bulb (but I don't have personal experience with this). The same holds true if you don't mind the plant going dormant and not fruiting or flowering during the winter months. This lady in Toronto is using a 30W LED for her citrus to keep her citrus alive with no other major light sources, as an example.

u/ultrahello · 1 pointr/SavageGarden

What plants are you growing? What are their light needs?

I use grow bulbs like this:
grow bulb on amazon

For my tropical flowering plants, like hibiscus and also for palms. Not all tropicals need high light however, some burn very easily because they are found under the canopy- like some ferns.

I run the grow lights between 10-16 hours a day, depending on the season and how the plant reacts.

u/SexyRodentMom5 · 1 pointr/gardening

The distance from my light to my plants is about 16.5” Can you tell me if this is a good lightbulb to use?

u/Astrali3 · 1 pointr/succulents

You absolutely can use fluorescents! As you only have one at the moment i am assuming you mean a round-ish bulb type lamp, not a fluorescent fixture/tube type. There are both specialty bulbs, like this(Note that just because it is sold as a grow light, does not mean it is actually good at what it does - just like some celeb a while back sold game consoles that no one bought, because they were trash. Also this bulb is LED, not fluorescent), and normal fluorescent bulbs sold in stores like Lowes. Not all bulbs are created equal; but a bulb from Lowe's is often sufficient.

If you plan to upgrade to many plants, you may wish to switch to tube-type bulbs, in which case you will need to take into account the output of the light. 6500K(Kelvin) is the color temperature generally suggested for succulents.

Feel free to reply if you would like more information or if you would like someone other then me to respond. Also, cannabis growers have a forum where they test light bulbs for their effective light output - they've been doing it for years! This might be informative for you.

Edit: Also, i would like to state that i am not dissing the bulb i linked. I have never used or purchased that item and cannot give a review on it.. Its just an example.

u/beelopeelo · 1 pointr/succulents

that would be fine, but I prefer grow lights that have colored LEDs in order to help my plants produce chlorophyll. a cheaper alternative that I’ve had for abt a year is this: ankace grow light . This is the best one I’ve tried!! :)) hope this helps

I don't know if you're still looking, but I've loved this 40W one. It's $20, it comes in two days, and it's brought out some great colors in all my different plants. It's not the strongest, but I think my plants are happier and I'm actually about to buy a second one. It has a timer feature and can clip onto tables and whatever else. I love it.

I use the red and blue grow lights. I leave them on for 12 hours a day, but I didn't think this type of grow light was that strong.

Could it cause the scarring on these leaves? They're over all of these Cremnosedum "Little Gems". I do put them in the sun for a couple of hours during the weekend as well. Could it be sun damage?

I use this grow light:

Should I get a lamp for my ginseng tree?

Hi all. I was gifted a ginseng bonsai tree. Problem is, I get no direct sunlight in my home, and I have no outdoor space to put it. Should I get a lamp for it? If so, what type of lamp should I get? This is the top result on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Light-Lights-Indoor-Plants-Spectrum/dp/B07PYFTHMW/

No idea: it’s one of numerous cheap Chinese variations on amazon...this one

I have it on 12 hours a day at full power, both red and blue light, and with the lamp placed as close as possible to the plant, to the point where the leaf tips touch the bulb.

Do you have a recommendation? I found this on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Light-Lights-Indoor-Plants-Spectrum/dp/B07PYFTHMW

u/Ladybac0n · 1 pointr/plants

You probably won’t know till you buy it. I would try and group your plants under it. If you notice your plants might need more light (leaf drop) then pick up a second one.
This is the one I use, I have two of them set up in two bunches of plants, they work great.

Any advice? It’s my first winter with succulents. Normally they are in my kitchen window however that window is pretty drafty and it’s getting cold at night now

u/spentuh · 1 pointr/Bonsai

Just updated the flair, thank you for the heads up can't believe i missed that.

Here's some photos of the Ficus and my setup. (the window is always open and north facing, just closed for the photos)

I also bought a cheap grow light from amazon https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07PYFTHMW/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Hmmmm. Well, I've only had the grow lights (I got these) for maybe a month now - everyone else (granted, no other eche's) has had sudden happy-plant growth spurts, so I'm hoping it should be enough light for it now? My eche is in a taller pot, so it's more like 6" from the light rather than ~10" like my smaller plants.

I've never done beheading so it's kind of intimidating for me, despite having read quite a few guides now! But I suppose it certainly is an option, and I'd have plenty of leaves to propagate if worse comes to worst.

I'm looking for some grow lights for a variety of succulents that have recently sprouted from seeds (mostly Echeveria with some Pachyphytum and some Sedum varieties). I live in an apartment with decent lighting and east facing windows, and currently am supplementing light for 10-12 hours a day with a cheap Amazon LED (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07PYFTHMW/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1).

However, I know as I get into the winter that I would like the option to use blackout curtains to maintain the heat in my apartment and would like some recommendations for primary grow lights. Currently, I'm using the pedestal arrangement because the plants are not in any sort of shelving, but rather on one large counter.

I am willing to get shelving, but would rather not mount anything into the ceilings as I live in a rental currently. I live in the 6b hardiness zone and will be using a bottom heating pad in the colder months as I'm not sure how warm I'll be keeping my apartment.

Any help would be appreciated :D

I use this Lithium battery pack from Talent Cell, it has worked great for 3 months so far. I keep it charged up and then just grab it when I'm headed out to my patio or out of the car. I made a quick adapter cable to run from the 12V 6A out to the T-style power connector for my radio. the beauty is that you can also use the 9V out or the USB for 5V if you need a different voltage.

600w hps with a fan and filter. you're going to want a fan and filter regardless of the lights you use, and the 600 hps will beat those two panels at a fraction of the cost. just duct the exhausted air out of a window and you won't be running much hotter than the leds.
if you're dead-set on led, look into cobs or go with a couple cheaper panels imo. maybe a couple of these. the ones you linked are really expensive and aren't going to be enough light for that 4x4 tent.

u/mstrymxer · -2 pointsr/hydro

The purple led grow lights are actually a mixture of the spectrums. You can do it with cfls but its very hard, a lot of energy, and heat. Ive used anything from cfl, to 150w hps, to a 300w ufo led setup. The led setup was the best and yes it was purple.

Whats the spectrum of those bulbs and what phase of growing is it?

This is 50$
